THE LEEDS, GRENVILLE & LANARK DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT Decemer 14th Food service workers like servers who work within 2m of unmasked people are now required to wear PPE. This means a surgical/medical mask and eye protection. Restaurant patrons can only remove their masks when eating and drinking which puts the worker at risk. Paul Lojko November 11, 1926 April 21, 2020 November 11 - Remembrance Day is a day to remember the many soldiers that fought and died defending our freedom. November 11 is also my father Paul Lojko’s birthday who passed away this year in his 94th year ... Paul was born in Tartak Poland. At the age of 13, the Soviets at the outset of World War 2, shipped Paul and his family to Siberia to the Labour Camps. His father and oldest brother died of mal nutrition in the labour camp. It is estimated that 1.5 million Polish citizens were arrested and shipped to labour camps throughout the Soviet Union from Eastern Poland. When the Soviets gave amnesty for Polish Citizens in 1941 and joined the Allies against the Germans Paul was shipped to Palestine to join the army while his stepmother and stepsister were shipped to Iran to the refugee camps. Paul’s other family members were retained and held by the Soviet Union. He was a a veteran of WW2 fighting under the British Command, 8th British Army, Polish Armoured Division under General Anders at the Battle of Monte Casino, and in Italy until the end of the War. After the War Paul emigrated to Canada as part of the Military Settlement Program as his home of Tartak. as well as, a large region of Poland was annexed into the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (Belarus). Paul moved to Brantford, Ontario where the met and married Loretta, and had three children Ted, Fred and Christine. Paul was President of Polish Combatants Association Branch #4 in Brantford, Ontario for 18 years Paul Lojko died on April 21, 2020 from declining health. Because of the global Covid-19 pandemic there was no public visitation, no church service, nor a military honour guard at the cemetery. On Novemeber 11, 2020 his family will gather in Brantford, Ontario to lay a wreath of rememberance at the National Monument that Paul Lojko, as the President of the Polish Combatant's Association, had built to commemerate the Polish Veterans of WW2 who fought under the British Command.

Halloween will be a little different this year. Parents whose children are going to Trick or Treat door to door....remember to ensure that all wear a proper mask, practice social distancing and eat the candy once you are home and have washed their hands....and possibly leave the candy for a day or two. Homeowners....social distancing, mask wearing and minimizing hands going into bowls for candy is important.... The 1000 Island Playhouse is doing a REVERSE HALLOWEEN....for those households where the parents prefer that the children do not go door to door. THIS HALLOWEEN, THE 1000 ISLAND PLAYHOUSE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS ARE DRESSING IN COSTUME AND BRINGING THE CANDY TO YOU! They’ve set out to make sure everyone can safely celebrate Halloween this year by offering Reverse Halloween. On the eve of Halloween, teams of volunteers will be dressing in costume as ghosts, witches, vampires, and more, and delivering FREE pre-packaged bags of candy to children’s doorsteps across Gananoque. The Playhouse goal is to ensure that every child can participate in Trick-or-treating activities, even if going door to door is not possible for them this year. To have a free candy package delivered to your child, sign up before October 27 and create an account by providing a parents name, home address, and the number of children in the household. Treat bags will be delivered Halloween night on Saturday, October 31 between 5-8pm. Sign up for REVERSE HALLOWEEN through the Playhouse free on-line ticket reservations: https://tickets.1000islandsplayhouse.com/TheatreMa/1/login Please note: Registration closes October 27. The REVERSE HALLOWEEN is limited to Gananoque residents only. One ticket = one Halloween treat bag. You may reserve for up to four kids per order. The Box Office will be in contact after you make your reservation to confirm details including any allergies or dietary restrictions. If you require extra Halloween treat-bags, or have any questions, please contact the Box Office: [email protected] Staff and volunteers will be following COVID-19 safety guidelines and protocols for the collection and distribution of candy. WANT TO HELP? For those that want to take part but don’t have any children at home, we are accepting donations of sealed boxes of candy to be used in the kids’ Halloween packages. Donations can be dropped off to the Firehall Theatre, located at 185 South Street, between 11am to 5pm, Monday to Friday until October 27.
