Today, the world remembers one of the darkest chapters of human history. International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the atrocities committed against European Jews, by the Nazis, between 1941 and 1945. The Nazi Regime instituted its persecution in stages. Starting in 1933, Jews and other undesirables were isolated from civil society. Jewish businesses were boycotted or destroyed and the people moved into ghettos or concentration camps. This persecution was enshrin...ed two years later with the passing of the Nuremburg Laws, leading to more intense persecution and violence. In 1942, the Nazis enacted what they considered the final solution to the Jewish problem. A program of systematic murder that took the lives of some six million Jews. While Jews made up the largest block of victims, the Holocaust era (1933-1945) also saw the deaths of an additional five million people, including ethnic Poles, Soviet Citizens, Roma, people of colour, homosexuals, political and religious dissidents and the disabled. Today we remember them all. The Holocaust had its roots in a political climate of fear, nationalism and misinformation that led the people to hate. It is a solemn reminder of how quickly hate can metastasize and grow when fear causes people to lose perspective. As we mark this sad commemoration, let us re-double our commitment to guard against hate, extremism and racism of all kinds, in our own hearts and in our society.
