Well last night I finished reading the graphic novel DANCING AT THE PITY PARTY by @tylerfeder, published by @penguinteen. Love the title, love the cover, love the story, love the illustrations. Gotta lotta love for this book! I greatly admire Feder’s candidness in letting readers into the deeply tragic loss of her mother - they were REALLY close (sob!) - at the age of 19. When you read this book you will travel through Feder’s entire life. She describes her childhood, what he...r mom was like, the period of her mom’s illness and death, the funeral, how shocking it is that the world keeps turning and life marches on, how awkward people were with her afterwards. There is a hilarious do’s and don’ts section on how to behave toward a friend who is grieving! Feder tells her story with honesty, kindness and gentle humour. I was very surprised to find that a book about death could be so full of joy and hope - who knew? I just want to say thank you to @tylerfeder for taking readers on this journey with her and for making me feel like there is life after personal tragedy. It gives me hope! #teenteamtuesday #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #dancingatthepityparty #penguinteen #tylerfeder See more

"Art and protest will forever be bound together. And the beautiful thing about art, like activism, is that it allows us space to be curious and learn. Sharing art has helped me learn how to make my voice heard and ask better questions." In This Is What I Know About Art, Kimberly Drew describes what inspired her to get into the art world, start the Tumblr blog called Black Contemporary Art, become the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and set... out on her own as a curator, writer, and activist. I couldn't put it down. Follow her @museummammy, check out Black Contemporary Art on Tumblr, and read her upcoming book with Jenna Wortham called Black Futures (coming out in December). #thisiswhatiknowaboutart #blackcontemporaryart #curation #teensatvpl #vancouverpubliclibrary #teenteamtuesday @pocketchangecollective @pathwaysvancity @penguinteen See more

We honour the survivors of Indian Residential Schools by learning more. Read about survivors' experiences, and remember the children who died. Read about the schools' lasting effects on families and communities, and recognize the intergenerational strength and resilience of those affected. All the books in this post are available as ebooks, and more titles about residential schools are available in our open branches. #orangeshirtday #childrights #everychildmatters #vancouverpubliclibrary #teensatvpl #sept30

Robin Ha's (single) mother wanted to give them both a new start, so abruptly moved Robin to Huntsville, Alabama, and married. Robin thought this trip to the US was for vacation - she didn't know she was leaving Seoul permanently! She didn't get to say goodbye to her many close friends, or even pack her things. Huntsville in the 1990s was a rough place for Robin and her mom... but spoiler alert: they make it out! Find out how in this moving graphic-style memoir - @robinhaart tackles bullying, starting over, staying connected to loved ones, and the power of being able to draw your own story. #teenteamtuesday #vancouverpubliclibrary #teensatvpl #ownvoices
