Jim Summers has been part of the TELUS Ride For Dad for many years. He never imagined that his hard work in the fight against prostate cancer would come back to save his own life. Through early detection, Jim was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he opted for the choice of surgery. The da Vinci surgical machine used for Jims surgery was the very same machine that Jim helped support years earlier. We would love for you to take a minute to read this inspiring story by Terry, a prostate cancer survivor. This will be Terrys 20th year participating in the Ride For Dad. "This will be my 20th straight year of doing the RFD. I live in the Ottawa Valley a couple of miles away from where Garry Janz, the co-founder lives. I was out on a ride in the spring of 2001 and stopped at the local Tims in Almonte. Garry introduced himself and asked if I had heard of the RFD. I said no s...o he told me about it and then asked if I had had a PSA test. I told him I didnt know what that was. He told me about prostate cancer and that I should have the test done. Turns out I was about to have a health check done at a private exec clinic in Toronto so I had it done. I went for my first RFD in June that year unsuspecting that I had prostate cancer. I got the results back after the ride and they said the numbers were high but I should be rechecked in a few weeks. The numbers were higher on that check so I had a biopsy which confirmed aggressive cancer. Just so happened there was an opening in surgery in the next weeks so I had it done the week of 911 at the Ottawa Hospital the old fashioned surgery way (no robot). The rest is history and I have rode and supported the RFD ever since. If it had not been for that chance meeting with Garry who knows where I would be now, but I suspect it wouldnt be on my back porch. I owe a lot to Garry and the RFD."
