Temagami Public Library congratulates Dustin Roy on publishing his book. Digging into Temagami’s mining history October 7, 2020 Arts & Entertainment Editorial Staff... By Jamie Mountain Local Journalism Initiative Reporter TEMAGAMI If you are curious about Temagami’s mining history, Dustin Roy’s new book is definitely up your alley. The Temagami author recently had his first-ever book published entitled Mining in Temagami. The book covers the history of 38 mine sites scattered throughout the municipality of Temagami, as well as some geology, Roy said. It describes 38 mine sites, 36 of which are in the Abandoned Mines Information System an online database provided by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines that documents over 5,000 abandoned and inactive mine sites in Ontario. Roy said the inspiration for writing Mining in Temagami was the fact that many locals wanted me to write a book about the history of mining in the Temagami area. This was because I already had a great deal of knowledge about the topic and it’s something many people do not know about, Roy explained in an online interview. He said that he gained most of his Temagami mining knowledge over the years from reading government reports that go back as early as the late 1800s. Roy is a historian who grew up and lives in the historic Temagami Mining Camp, one of the most prolific mining regions in North America. Mining in Temagami has been published through White Mountain Publications in Cobalt and Roy said that the writing and publishing process has been working out very well. Writing the book kept me busy for many years, he noted. Early reception to Mining in Temagami has also generally been positive and Roy hopes that readers will gain interest in the Temagami Mining Camp. While at this time he hasn’t given much thought to writing another book, Roy said that he isn’t ruling out the possibility of doing so in the future. Anyone interested in purchasing Mining in Temagami can do so by visiting the White Mountain Publications store located at 50 Silver Street in Cobalt or at their website at https://wmpub.ca/1328-Temagami.html. https://speaker.northernontario.ca/digging-into-temagamis-/
