November 3rd, 2020 - Something is afoot... A crazy snowfall has confused the staff and they've gone into full blown Christmas decoration mode a month early for the winter rental season! Obviously the state of our 2021 chart has led them to believe we'll soon be booking November weeks for December holidays. I suppose if we just increase the distance between boats... Of course this is all in good fun. What's your best guess as to what is happening at Leisure Island?

It's that time of year again... The boats are out (picture from the top parking lot taken Sunday night) and we're working hard to get the winterized before the snow comes - spoiler alert - it's too late, the snow has fallen (picture from the office deck taken this morning)! The 10 day forecast has a highest high of +6C and a lowest low of -8C. The rest falls in-between. Today we're waiting for the sun to break through and start warming us to to temperatures above 0C. Ro...pes are frozen, so moving the docks into place for the winter is on hold until warmer weather comes tomorrow. Half the motor lower units are winterized, and hoping tomorrow's +4C will see the rest done before Thursday's -8C night. This time of year is always bittersweet - it signals the end of another busy season, but it also means we won't get to see you again until next year. We're so thankful for all of you and the patience you showed as we worked hard to implement Covid cleaning, which extended our cleaning time by more than double, and our short staffing issues which lead to not being able to offer the usual early boarding times as in previous years. It was definitely a trying year, but we are happy to have been able to open and serve you! Now that it's nearly done, we're sad, but also happy for the desperately needed rest that is coming... I'm not sure we've ever had a more exhausting year! I know it's been tough on everyone in all areas of the country and all the different industries and businesses. I can't say how much we've appreciated your support this year while having to unexpectedly increase prices. So many added extra in tips to show your support - thank you so much from ourselves and the rest of the staff! Please stay safe this winter - we look forward to seeing you all next year. Hopefully Covid will be past by then, but if not, at least we have what we need now to deal with it and we've got a year of experience under our belt to make things smoother.

This was lovingly created for our sweet girl to help her collect her eggs in style. Knowing our Abby pretty much anything could end up in those pockets. Thanks so much, Christine Barnes for your thoughtfulness and creativity!

This fall has been perfect for mushrooms. We have enjoyed several delicious feeds of wild mushrooms around here with our mushroom crazy daughter keeping her eyes peeled at all times for anything she knows is edible. Doug Adams is our go-to guy to make sure we wont regret eating anything weve picked.

Something tells me houseboats will be coming in a little late this morning... Fog is just lifting.

This Sunday I had to go up the lake on a service call. It was a calm day with a little rain here and there. Honestly, a lovely boat ride to Granny Bay in the north arm. I arrived at the customers boat to service the fridge and was met with the most concerned customers Ive dealt with so far this year. No, they werent concerned about their problem, but about having called me out on a Sunday to help them. This is my job, at least the incredibly enjoyable part of it. It... was a great reminder of the wonderful people that make up our customers. I floated with them on the calm waters for the 20 minutes it took me to get the fridge working again, then another hour or two (time really did just slip away on the glassy waters) chatting with the people who still felt bad asking me to come help. I was given a coffee with cream and maple syrup, since they didnt have sugar on hand. Really, it was just nice to hang out and chat for a while and show their son the depth finder so he could see the fish he hoped to catch. The hospitality was wonderful, and as I got ready to leave after our morning visit, I got handed a fruit and nut chocolate bar because I must be getting hungry... At the very least, it was a reminder of why I love doing this, even though this year has been full of challenges brought on by Covid-19. If it wasnt for our wonderful customers, this would be just another job that became far more difficult and painful this year. Thanks for letting us know our efforts are so appreciated! Some good news... Still no real details, so bear with us as we'll be looking for more information to fact check this...

It was a hot one today, but the girls really wanted to show off their Covid gear and strike a pose. Robert may or may not have been forced. Well, due to workplace harassment policy, paragraph 5.3, he couldnt be forced, so lets say he willingly participated! Working hard to make your boat safe and clean. Things certainly have changed with the new protocols. As a result, you may notice some changes when you come. One, it is taking much longer to clean and disinfect the b...oats for your safety. Twice as long, in fact. Due to these unforeseen events back when we set the rate for this year, we are considering applying a Covid surcharge for cleaning to help cover the extra time our staff is working on your boat, along with the extra disinfectants now in use. With longer cleaning times comes other issues, like the early board times we have offered in the past. Boats may not be available until 6pm or later this year. Keep in mind we are looking for more staff and seeing how we can decrease to time taken per boat with staff training, but it definitely requires more time than ever before. One way we are trying to shave off time is to minimize the items for cleaning and disinfecting. Essentials are on the boat, but anything extra weve removed. Youll still find the boat will stocked, but towels, including bathroom and kitchen, are available by request, since we know many being their own. The same applies for pillows and lifejackets. We have them if you need them, but theyve been removed of the boat to keep them clean until needed, should you not bring your own. We are working hard to continue to provide the same great experience you expect from us, even with Covid concerns. Please do remember to bring a mask to make interaction easier, especially in our office. Weve limited the office to one group at a time for safety, so checkout may be slower. We know you will be patient with us as we all adapt to these new challenges.

While restrictions are slowly being lifted for some businesses to open, others remain closed. At this time, due to the nature of short term rentals, we remain closed by provincial order. Crown land camping is still banned, so even if you could go out on a houseboat, you can't camp anywhere. Gwen has been attending many, many meetings online with diffe...rent tourist associations and business associations to stay current on all that is happening and changing, and it seems to be in flux daily. While we hope for good news to be able to open soon, all signs seem to point to us being several weeks away from that point yet. If you have a booking coming up, we'll call you closer to the time to let you know the state of things and whether we'll be allowed to serve you or not. There is nothing we want more than to see all our customers again! But we also want to make sure you will remain as safe as possible during your stay. We are following cleaning protocol guidelines closely so when we can open we'll be ready. Some are a little scary, like suggestions to leave rooms clear for 5 days - I don't know how we could do that without picking and choosing who can come.. Other guidelines may include a deep clean with a 24 hour wait before occupation. All these things are still in discussion stages and will have to go through a couple stages before we will be notified of what must be done. This makes us pretty sure that it'll be awhile before seasonal short term rental businesses are opened. We can only wait and see. We know you want to come, and we want you to come as well, but until the province allows us to open, we're all just wishing this year was like any other... Rest assured, we'll be ready for the moment the province gives us good news! Until then, well keep practicing social distancing so were healthy and ready to serve you! The progression of ice out this year. Today it is clear to the park, but we've been reminded that it is called 'Northern' Ontario for a reason. This is the first year in three that I wouldn't have to force the ice out around our docks, but with the pandemic it doesn't matter. Our open is delayed either way. The good news is I'll still get time to maintain the boats even with these weather issues keeping me from painting... Earliest photos are April 28. Newest photos were a daily shot of progression.

And this is why no one can give us a straight answer... I know we cannot open but there is a lot of confusion and some of the people Ive spoken to who should have answers for me dont. Thank you Mr. Vanthof for speaking up for us in our frustration.

Many of you wonder what we get up to in the winter. Here's the latest project Abby and I completed for a contest that ends January 22nd. It was to build a certain plane and decorate it. Abby helped from start to finish with taping the plans, transferring them to foam board, cutting the pieces, and assembly. She then planned out the design for decoration and did all the artwork herself! It was a great project for STEAM class and i thought I'd share the journey with you. Leisure Island Houseboats... And Helicopter??? Had a visitor last week during Hydro One's inspection of hydro lines on the nearby islands. Lots of fun watching him land and take off. Less fun finding out they blocked our driveway with the truck while the guy in the truck went for a ride, so we played hide and seek with the truck by parking it alongside a houseboat to get it out of the way. I figured they had an unfair advantage with the helicopter anyway... Then we were off to help with getting the Temagami Country Christmas light displays up! A fun Friday and Saturday night in the bush with so many lights even Clark Griswold would be in awe!

Had a surprise visit from one of our spring customers today. He was biking with his friend and wanted to stop by and show him the boats. Beautiful day to be enjoying this summer weather and the start of these fall colors! Even better getting to visit with customers and the friends they bring while they are promoting our business! We are so thankful for all our friends who recommend us and speak so highly of our service to others. Thank you!

Yamaha says winter's over. Open water season is now! Everyone is surprised at how well our 9.9 high thrust Yamaha engines push the houseboat. Not many get to see how well they push ice. Of course, twins do it better.

Everyone hoping to catch walleye while houseboating - these are some of the men to thank for all of their hard work when the waters cold and when the blackflies are hungry. Were thankful for their dedication in restocking our lakes to help keep the walleye population healthy.
