Special Agent M is on an Impossible Mission At the beginning of the lesson Special Agent M’s used her super powerful observation skills and noticed straight away that all the studio stuffies have gone missing . This is when I delivered her first mission in order to save the stuffies from impending doom, she had to find all the landmark notes that were hidden all around the studio and place them in their correct categories C, F, or G (this is when ...I start playing the Mission Impossible music!) . When Mission #1 is completed, she is to complete Mission #2 and this Mission is MUCH harder!! For this Mission, she is to pick and 5 landmark notes and put them in any order. THEN, she is to transcribe them onto my whiteboard staff And FINALLY, she is to play the transcription on the piano She is to repeat this two more times with the remaining landmark notes . After Mission #2 is completed she rescued the stuffies and all put right again by Special Agent M . This is such a fun activity! And as if you have seen my previous posts, you know it is SO versatile! you can use it for almost all musical concepts! I mainly use it as a fun and engaging way ‘test’ a student’s retention of a certain new concept that we have been working on in previous lessons . For example, this student has been working on landmark notes and to wrap up this ‘unit’ I had her do his Mission Impossible activity . My students just this activity and I get request to play it all the time . . . . . #pianolesson #pianolessonsforkids #musiclessonsforkids #tempimusicschool #pianolessonsedmonton #pianoteacher #pianostudent #pianoteachingideas #inspiredteaching #piano #learningthroughplay #pianoteachernation #musicteacher #teachingpiano #teachingmusic #kidspiano #edmonton #yeg #beginnerpianolessons #privatemusiclessons See more

Confession time! This 4yr old is completing an activity that completely improvised on the spot What I had planned for her was a Mission Impossible activity where I hide note values all around the studio, and the student searches for them and sorts them into their categories. . BUT . . . I did not have time to set it up after her sister completed a Mission Impossible Sooooo . . . I had to improvise I had the categories set up and the note values were all scr...ambled from her sisters previous lesson . . . So I decided to have her do a simple sort . She was to take a note value from the ‘pile’ on the wall and place it in its correct category When she completed the sort, I asked her to pick 4 note values and put them in a row in any order and play the rhythm she made Since there were 12 note value cards, I asked her to do this 3 times making 3 rows of 4 rhythms. Then we played all 3 rows one after the other . This was such a simple activity I cannot believe that I did not think of it before! Some of the best activities come out of improvised moments in my lessons I will definitely be doing this sorting activity again . . . . . #pianolesson #pianolessonsforkids #musiclessonsforkids #tempimusicschool #pianolessonsedmonton #pianoteacher #pianostudent #pianoteachingideas #inspiredteaching #piano #learningthroughplay #pianoteachernation #musicteacher #teachingpiano #teachingmusic #kidspiano #edmonton #yeg #beginnerpianolessons #privatemusiclessons See more

In last week’s lesson, this 4yr old leant a new note value a dotted half note And is there a better way to learn a new note value than to use Play Doh?! I think not She had a ton of fun sculpting the new note value along with all the others . In her previous 16 lessons, she learned all about quarter notes, half notes and whole notes We played lots of rhythm games (like Rhythm Race) and she also played these note values in her pieces Now that she mastered ... these values, it was time to introduce the dotted half note . I started the lesson showing her flash cards of the note values that she already knew and discussed the differences between them I left a spot between a 1234 and a 1. Then, I stared by asking her to tell me the difference between a 1234 (whole note) and a 12 (half note). Then to tell me the difference between a 12 and a 1 (quarter note) Then I asked Are we are missing a note? We have a 1234, 12, and a 1 .... ? I pointed to the blank spot and we deduced that there should be something there a 123! We then discussed how the 123 looks and how it differs from a 12 . Then the fun began! She chose pink Play Doh to sculpt all the notes Having her sculpt the notes, further reinforces the differences between the notes it locks the values in their mind Not to mention its super fun!! . . . . . #pianolesson #pianolessonsforkids #musiclessonsforkids #tempimusicschool #pianolessonsedmonton #pianoteacher #pianostudent #pianoteachingideas #inspiredteaching #piano #learningthroughplay #pianoteachernation #musicteacher #teachingpiano #teachingmusic #kidspiano #edmonton #yeg #beginnerpianolessons #privatemusiclessons See more

This is this 6yr olds 17th lesson and her 1st introduction to musical form AND how to practice effectively . In her previous lessons, she was playing pieces that were 4 bars long, so this discussion never came up. This lesson though, she was ready for longer pieces . These 8 bar pieces I composed specifically for this student so I could introduce musical analysis I started the discussion by asking her if she noticed if the 1st bar happened again. She searc...hed her piece, grinned , and proudly announced that they did! Then I said if the first bar repeats, I wonder if the 2nd bar does too . . . ? We searched the piece together and found out that indeed it did, and it was right beside bar 1! . We then decided to use the colour red to ‘box’ the repeated 2 bars bars 1&2 and 5&6 Then we analyzed the rest for bars that repeat, decided that there were no others and used different colours to denote bars 3&4 and 7&8 . Then the discussion moved to the topic of practice In previous lessons, we talked about how to practice, that effective practice means repeating her song (remember, they were only 4 bars long!). For these longer pieces, I asked her if there are 2 red boxes, do we have to practice both? She thought a bit and said ‘nope!’ . We then decided that the best way to practice this piece is to repeat each box a certain amount. I then introduced her to Siri We asked her to pick a number between 3 and 7. And we took that outcome and repeated the red box that many times We repeated this process for the other 2 boxes. And to top it off we did the whole song as written . We then analyzed her other song, drew the boxes and discussed again how to beat practice this song! . Music analysis and effective practicing are 2 very important skills that I am determined to instil in my students from a young age . . . . . #pianolesson #pianolessonsforkids #musiclessonsforkids #tempimusicschool #pianolessonsedmonton #pianoteacher #pianostudent #pianoteachingideas #inspiredteaching #piano #learningthroughplay #pianoteachernation #musicteacher #teachingpiano #teachingmusic #kidspiano #edmonton #yeg #beginnerpianolessons #privatemusiclessons See more

This 9yr old is a landmark pro In her previous lesson, I introduced the landmark notes and in this lesson she completely nailed it She can not only write them on the staff and associate the written note with the key cards but also play them effortlessly (and correctly!) I’m so proud of this (not so!) little one . For this activity, I started by choosing 5 piano key cards and placing them in a specific order. Then I asked her to place stuffies on the the floo...r staff (pic 2) that match the correct order of the cards Next, I had her draw the cards on the whiteboard (pic 1). Then finally, I had her play the corresponding pitches on the piano . She was such a pro at this that I reversed the activity! On the whiteboard I drew 5 landmark notes. She then found the correct piano key card and placed them underneath the correct note. Next she placed the stuffies on the floor staff and finally played them on the piano . I this activity as it really reinforces the visual relationship between what the note looks like on the staff and what the note looks like on the keyboard This is such an essential skill for our students to develop! . This student had so much fun doing this activity so much so that I think next lesson I will introduce the octaves and the current landmarks that she knows and repeat this activity! . . . . . #pianolesson #pianolessonsforkids #musiclessonsforkids #tempimusicschool #pianolessonsedmonton #pianoteacher #pianostudent #pianoteachingideas #inspiredteaching #piano #learningthroughplay #pianoteachernation #musicteacher #teachingpiano #teachingmusic #kidspiano #edmonton #yeg See more
