The year was 1501. The great explorers set out in their ships in hopes of making new discoveries, of being the first to step onto lands not before seen. And so it was Gaspar Corte-Real arrived somewhere on the coast of the island of Newfoundland. There he encountered a new people, gentle, curious and unencumbered by contact with the "outside world." That was all about to change.
