As of this morning, businesses can now apply for the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS), which will help cover up to 65% of the rent for businesses who’ve been hard hit by the pandemic. The new Lockdown Support will also provide an additional 25% for those who have been subject to a lockdown. Importantly, funding will go directly to businesses not to landlords. As businesses all across the country are facing new regulations to stop the spread of COVID-19, our government is going to do whatever it takes to keep Canadians healthy and our economy moving forward.

Today is National Housing Day. Across Canada, and especially here in Burnaby and North Vancouver, the housing crisis has made finding a safe, affordable home a challenge for families from all walks of life. That’s why our government has made historic investments in housing through our $55+ billion National Housing Strategy (NHS). One of the most recent developments under the NHS is our new Rapid Housing Initiative. Designed to help alleviate some of the added housing strains created by the pandemic, this program will quickly create 3000 new affordable homes across the country. Every Canadian deserves a safe and affordable place to call home, and our government is committed to doing our part. Children are our future, and since 2015, our government has been investing in children and families across Canada. One of the very first things we did as a government was create the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). The CCB has helped over 9 out of 10 families in our community with more tax-free money each month, and it has led to the largest reduction in poverty in Canadian history. On top of the many other programs and investments we’ve put in place, we’ve also committed to creating a Canada-wide early learning and childcare system. Happy #NationalChildDay! Check out the Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development, Ahmed Hussen’s video below (Nova and I are in it)!

Canada’s first-ever Indigenous-led Coast Guard auxiliary has started operations! As part of our $1.5 billion dollar Oceans Protection Plan, we are working in partnership with coastal Indigenous communities to improve marine safety and better protect our oceans. The Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CN-CGA) is staffed entirely by First Nations, and they are now on-call to respond to emergencies in remote areas of B.C. This is a fantastic step forward for both the process of reconciliation, and the health and safety of our coasts and those who use them. https://www.canada.ca//canadas-first-indigenous-led-canadi

After the fire Sunday night, and being shut down most of the day yesterday, the Burnaby Hospital ER is now back open to walk-ins. Thankfully, due to the hard work of everyone involved, including the Burnaby Fire Department, nobody was injured. Doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff already have enough on their plate during this pandemic. It's critical that we all do our part to assist them by wearing masks, socially distancing and washing our hands. #community #firstresponders #essentialworkers #frontlineworkers #washyourhands #wearamask
