Spring is here.... daffodils are up, blossoms are showing on the trees and the sun is warm on my face! Here is the colour palette for Spring/Summer 2019... are any of these your colours? If you have summer clothes that need altering or repairing please contact me and perhaps I can help.
Good morning! Have you dug yourself out from all that snow? The sunshine has me thinking Spring Cleaning and looking forward to getting the garden going.... I have been able to pick kale almost all winter but will dig everything up and start afresh as soon as it is warm enough! Is it time to go through your wardrobe and decide what should stay and what should go? If you are missing a button or a hem has come down on an old favourite make sure to call me? I have a weighted blanket to make and some sewing for us but there is always time to sew for you!! Some photos of some of the things I have made over the years.... and a Camp Fire rose which is one of my favourites!
I am still here! This past month I have been working for Elections BC helping to make Wednesday's election happen. If you have never worked behind the scenes of an election it is a real eye opener. This is something I have done at every opportunity for at least the past 20 years.... so first in Ontario and now in Nanaimo. Next time you vote please thank the people working.... without them you would not be able to put your X or check mark on the ballot!
I hope you are all starting off 2019 on a positive note? We had some excitement before Christmas with the storm here on Vancouver Island. We were fortunate in that we did not lose power which meant that we were able to help neighbours who did. Our daughters and my brother came for Christmas and it was a tight squeeze but so good to have family together.... and we chatted on Facetime with our son in Ontario. I was busy making weighted blankets right up until just before Christmas and then scrambled to make capes lined with beautiful Chinese silk [which was a gift from a dear friend] for my girls! I am now working for Elections BC until the end of the month and then please get in touch if you have any sewing you want done!!
Just finished a 15 lb weighted blanket in minke fabric! Very different to working with cotton!
Just finished making this cape from an alpaca blanket... Really pleased with the results!
For something different I spent a couple of evenings helping out with dressing for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company's production of Nutcracker at the Port Theatre here in Nanaimo. All those young dancers playing the smallest mice, the polar bears, angels etc were local and they did such an awesome job! The adult dancers were a pleasure to work with. A good experience and a new appreciation for all the hard work that goes into a production of this size. https://www.rwb.org/whats-on/show/nutcracker1/
5 lb weighted "lap" blankets for deep pressure therapy. Suitable for children over 3 years old and young adults with sensory needs. $80 each.
I have been busy at the Chemainus Theatre Costume Workshop helping with costumes for Little Women! Looking forward to seeing the show on Friday with Mark! https://chemainustheatrefestival.ca/our-shows/little-women/
Such an amazing day yesterday as a vendor at the Child Development Center Making Connections Conference. Met so many kind and caring people who are passionate about what they do working with children.... Lots of interest in the weighted blankets I make...
I will be a vendor at this upcoming conference at the Nanaimo Child Development Centre on November 3rd. https://nanaimocdc.com/events/conference/
I have been remiss in posting on my page.... I have been busy! Did some costume work for Grease down at the theatre workshop in Chemainus. If you haven't been .... treat yourself, it is well worth it! So much fun! We took a much needed break ... a week in Las Vegas, most of it away from the Strip. So Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire... hot... hot.... hot but wow it is so beautiful! I made a whole bunch of lavender bags for Lavender and Black on Salt Spring Island see https://www.facebook.com/lavenderandblack/ This morning I finished off making 23 small screens with velcro for a client who needs them for small camper vans with a pop up roof which he rents out. The joy of owning my own business is that I never know what I will be asked to do next!!
While my son was at college a friend invited him to do Sword and Board. When I asked him what he would like for Christmas he asked me to make him a gambeson.... this is how it turned out!! Denhim, linen and bamboo batting. Lots of people having fun with re-enactment these days and I would love an opportunity to try something like this again....
