DJ's POTD - Chasing one of the first runs of the re-built (dare I say bastarized?) TH&B Geeps on the Port Maitland turn, I was permitted to board the TH&B caboo...se for a few photos while the crew switched the phosphate plant. The nose of former TH&B 72 taken looking out the back door of an Angus-built steel van. See more

DJ's POTD - Sorry, still stuck in 1987. Well, maybe not. It seems like it was a good year in some respects. IN others - not so much. The TH&B Geeps went to ...Angus for a redo much to the chagrin of many including myself. Some clever TH&B employee wrote '72' on 1682's frame, lamenting the fact as well. Here they sit with one of their sister units in Hamilton who awaits her fate. The Geeps were outbound for Port Maitland that day, Oct 05, 1987. See more

On a freezing cold afternoon in January, some time in the mid 1980s, I got in my piece of crap car and drove to the Hamilton airport to see about getting a plan...e ride over the city because, well, why not? I parked my car in the gravel parking lot at the airport and walked into one of the hangars where the local flying club kept their planes. I recall there weren't many people around, but eventually I found someone and explained my plan. "I need someone to fly me over the city. I want to take pictures of the steel mills and rail yards. Can I hire someone to do that?" It didn't take long before a few guys had gathered around, and I'd repeated my story often enough that at least one person knew I was serious. "Sure, I could use some hours," one guy said. "Pay for the gas and I'll take you up." I handed the guy $60 and next thing I knew I was bouncing around in a 30-year-old airplane with barely enough heat in the cabin to keep the windows from frosting over. The ride was loud and bumpy until we got over the steel mills, and then it got downright scary as the little plane got tossed around by the heat rising from the factories. I made the pilot do a loop around the TH&B roundhouse at Chatham Street and took a series of photos from all sides. This one shows the roundhouse in the middle, a blue Stelco building on the right, and the sprawling Westinghouse plant on the left. I didn't look at these slides for years, but now I'm thankful that my younger self acted on impulse and lived for the moment. I've added a screen grab from Google Maps to illustrate the change. DJ's POTD - TH&B 75, 73 and 51 head east lite power with an Angus-built van through Hamilton, likely destined for Smithville and south on the branch to Port Maitland. August 30, 1987. Reposted since I couldn't stand the pink in the sky. I'll get it right.

Linda Button Reg Button’s Photographs Not too far from the decommissioned steam engines we’ve seen in past posts emerges the new TH&B diesel engines 401, 402 an...d 403. Reg captured them at the Chatham St. yard as they headed to the Hunter St station to make their debut on March 21, 1954. In the picture you can see the new fueling station for the diesels and at the bottom of the picture are retired wooden boxcars. See more
