Lots of work has been done to protect Canadian homeowners, but the support provided is deferring payments and adding interest to the mortgage. Homeowners are not getting a free ride; they still are required to maintain their current amortization and may face increased payments after the deferral period as a result. Skipping a mortgage payment is not like erasing it; it still needs to be paid to the bank, just at a later time.... I am not sure what a renter is going to do, this needs to be dealt with quickly, and with both the landlord and the tenant's issues in mind.
