Today we had 2 new guests join our play groups. -Lily the terrier mix (recently adopted from Homes for Paws Dog Rescue) came by for some socialization. Lily is slowly working on gaining confidence and her mom will be working closely with our trainer Amanda, to help her with her fears. She did so well for her one hour today! Go Lily go! - Frank (The adorable yorkie) came by for his first half day and boy did he have fun! He enjoyed zooming around with Pico, Dexter, and hangin...g out with a Nylabone. What good kids! #welcometodaycamp #newfriends #smalldogs #confidencebuilding #thecanineclubhouse #dogdaycare

And preferably one that has proper credentials and experience, with an understanding of learning theory and how behavior modification truly works. Making you...r dog face their fears by force is not the way to help them build confidence. I want you to think of something youre afraid of. Lets say youre scared of snakes and you see one on the ground. You stop dead in your tracks and start to display your fear and discomfort about it. Now imagine someone grabs you by your shirt and begins forcefully pulling you to walk closer to it. You begin to screech, maybe try to run away - but no, you get corrected for displaying any discomfort and the person continues to pull you closer. This is what I hear from many clients over the years that tell me a previous trainer did that to their dog or advised them to do it. I want to help spread awareness that behavior modification takes time, effort, empathy, and compassion - never force or intimidation. A trainers goal should not be to simply get the dog to do it its about getting the dog to to do it or be doing it, not simply the action of doing it. If you finally get pulled toward the snake, does it make you feel more confident around snakes now? Does it make you like snakes for some reason all of a sudden? Of course not. When it comes to dog training, the is the most crucial part. When a dog is fearful of something, the best thing you can do is allow your dog to have choices and focus on rewarding exposure at a comfortable distance from the thing they are worried about. As we already know, choices and consent are extremely important and powerful things to have in ones life. Without them you may get learned helplessness and potentially bigger problems down the road for your dog that can result in an even less confident dog than you started with in the first place. Building confidence come from forcing a dog into situations they dont want to participate in, it comes from allowing your dog to have choices and creating positive associations as often as possible. #fromdusktilldog #dogfacts #dogtrainingtips #doginfo

Did you know we offer a reduced training rate for dog rescues? Our goal is to help as many dogs as possible which means sometimes helping dogs get ready for adoption so they can find their forever home! Meet Queenie!... This beautiful girl was rescued by All Paws Matter Rescue.Recently, Queenie started exhibiting signs of anxiety and reactivity on walks, so her rescue reached out to us for help. On Friday, we had our first session with Queenie and her wonderful foster family. We made sure to go over all the basics including how to use a marker, teaching a default behavior, what emotional arousal/threshold are and how to do a proper consent test. In addition, we also worked on Queenies reactivity by counter conditioning her to her trigger at a proper distance. Queenie did so well! She was able to disengage all by herself without going over threshold and is very food motivated! Queenie will be available soon through All Paws Matter Rescue. Keep an eye out for her adoption bio soon. #forcefreetraining #positivereinforcement #training #sciencebased #rescuedog #rescuedogsrock #availablesoon #thecanineclubhouse #queenie

Meet Pemi! Pemi (previously Buda) was adopted by my rescue @homesforpawsdogrescue last year after her and her sister were diagnosed with Parvo. This week she stayed with us and today she went home to her family. It was so nice to see Pemi again! She is all grown up and her family has done such a great job with raising her. Swipe to see Pemi as a pup!... #thecanineclubhouse #overnightstay #rescuedog #shepherdmix #parvosurvivor #allgrownup #pemi

These findings refute the suggestion that training with an E-collar is either more efficient or results in less disobedience, even in the hands of experienced ...trainers. In many ways, training with positive reinforcement was found to be more effective at addressing the target behavior as well as general obedience training. This method of training also poses fewer risks to dog welfare and quality of the human-dog relationship. Given these results we suggest that there is no evidence to indicate that E-collar training is necessary, even for its most widely cited indication. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles//fvets.2020.00508/full

A good trainer will always tell you to work with your dog under-threshold, but what does this really mean? It simply means to not place the dog into a situati...on where they feel the need to react; a dog thats not reacting is under-threshold; a dog that is reacting is over their threshold and therefore stressed, and, as a consequence, unable to learn or listen effectively. There are two main points to thresholds that are really important (and a third one when dealing with live stimulus): Your dogs how close can your dog get to a stimulus before feeling the need to react? Yours how close can you get to a stimulus before you get worried about what your dog may do? The stimulus in the example of a dog reactive dog, if the other dog is a young puppy off the lead, then your dogs threshold may be significantly greater, as the other dog may rush over to say hello. We are able to tell if our dogs are on the limit of their threshold by observing their body language and vocalisation. Each situation is unique, so please be aware that your dog WILL react differently, in different situations/on different days/indifferent weather conditions/environments/with different people etc. so make sure you adjust your training accordingly, so its fair on them
