"Steel isn't strong, boy, flesh is stronger!" Thulsa Doom - Conan the Barbarian "Today, the steel won ....." - Ed the Cinqagenerian
A couple months back, an old friend scored me a couple axles from an old Chev Blazer (at least I think it was a Blazer). Some online research led me to believe that the steel was either 4140 or 1055 carbon. Today I finally got the courage to try and move it on the anvil. It will provide me source material for several tools, and my first hammer fabrication. I really need a power hammer...lol
Just a simple fishing knife. I'll be working on a matching Chef's cleaver this week. D2 steel, and a white oak handle...
Back in the forge today!.... these will eventually be a matched set. Handles will be white oak.
Failures are a part of life. part 2. This tactical Mini cleaver was one of the best shapes that I have ever come up with. I made it out of a piece of D2 steel which I have never worked with before. You cannot heat treated the way you can other carbon steels. So with a little bit of help from 2 of my kids I did the quench correctly. And i was quite proud of myself. Then I ended up breaking the knife trying to correct a little wiggle that had developed . Serves me right! back tobthe drawing board
An interesting read about the only swordsmith in Okinawa. https://ohh.okinawa/en/article/16897/
