The Grande inauguration citoyenne du Réseau Express Vélo (bicycle boulevard) attracts 4,000 cyclists on St Denis Street.

Political polarization on bike paths? This article talks about merchants and citizens ferociously opposed to new bike paths built either as anti-COVID-19 measures or as part of the Réseau express vélo (REV), a sort of bicycle highway system. Cyclists in favour of the new bike paths launch a boycott of merchants opposed to them... The irony, as mentioned by Vélo québec spokesperson Suzanne Lareau, is that many of these merchants would probably see increased sales with the new ...bike paths. Multiple studies in different cities point in this direction, indicating that cyclists are an important clientele for most stores. (some exceptions include furniture stores and lumber yards) Perhaps all cyclists, when making purchases, should tell store personnel: "J'achète chez vous et je suis venu à vélo."/"I am buying stuff in your shop and I rode a bicycle to get here."

Looking at the reasons why some motorists hate cyclists. The dollar figures given here about road maintenance are from Australia, but it is the same pattern in Canada & the USA. In other words, fuel taxes do not pay for all road building & maintenance costs; a big chunk is paid for out of general revenues. This means that cyclists who do not even own a car are already paying for road maintenance. Other studies have shown that it is in fact motorists whose actions are subsidized by governments...

What the pandemic has done for bicycling: Where statistics are available, they show huge rises in bicycle use across Europe and America. In Switzerland, the number of kilometres cycled since early March has risen by 175% (and fallen by 11% for trams). In Philadelphia cycling is up by 151%; usage of New York’s bike-share scheme rose by 67% in March, year-on-year. It was 45 years ago this month that activities began for a group originally called Citizens on Cycles, demanding infrastructure and services for bicycles in Montreal at a time when there was nothing. That group soon changed its name to Le Monde a bicyclette and dramatically changed Montreal. Over the subsequent decades, members of that group went to jail to fight for bike paths and access to the metro. When faced with deaf ears from authorities, the group thought of imag...inative ways to draw media attention. In this photo Robert Bicycle Bob Silverman dressed as Moses and tells reporters he knows how cyclists can cross the St. Lawrence River (at the time, bicycles were banned from all the bridges). Today, Montreal has some 700km of bike paths and is recognized as the #1 bicycling city in North America by the international Copenhagenize index. All cyclists in Montreal owe a huge debt to the valiant cycling pioneers of Le Monde a bicyclette

How do false rumours start? Often when people do not cite sources... On April 8, Russian author Jurgen Thoelen, who presents himself as an entrepreneur and an athlete, published an opinion piece on the Medium blog platform that went viral in a few hours: "according to a Belgian and Dutch study" , he wrote, you should not, in our era of social distancing, stand within 5 meters behind a runner or cyclist, because of the "cloud" of droplets that he would emit in his wake. If it ...is a training cyclist, the safe distance is even 20 meters, However, no study was mentioned in the text. His source, Thoelen acknowledged, was an article read in Belgian media that morning, which quoted Dutch researcher Bert Blocken of Eindhoven University of Technology, author with his three Belgian and Dutch animation IT colleagues. No study was mentioned in the Belgian media article either. As for Blocken, he is neither a microbiologist nor an epidemiologist, but an expert in aerodynamics.

I am not the type to "chew the rag" but today, I was treated like a plague victim while doing my grocery shopping because I went there by bike. The facts first: I went to the Métro Market where I have been going for 20 years with my 2 bags to fill. A security guard first refused me entry. Apparently, grocery stores refuse to bring their own bags, which I understand perfectly. I had a mask and latex gloves, showing my concern for the pandemic. After negotiation, we accepted th...at I enter with my bags on the lower tray of the basket, with a promise not to touch it. At the exit, I myself put my food in my bags, aware that the staff should not approach it. So far, nothing to complain about. But, when I met the guard at the exit, he warned me, grumbling, that I should not return by bicycle in the future, that he would block my access. It got stuck in my throat. Crucial detail: the scene took place in Laval. It was so incongruous to ride my bike there to do my shopping that I had to patiently explain to the caretaker that I could not put my bicycle bags in the car since I was on my bike and not in my car . It was for him as if I was doing my grocery shopping on camels. In Montreal, do we live this kind of ban? Am I wrong to be offended by it? Is it from the guardian a "nervous poop" in the face of the improbable, the unknown, and the inexplicable or is it a company policy? See more
