It is illegal to dump snow onto public property as happened here with the REV (urban bike boulevard)
2020 has been a good year for bicycles, but a poor year for BIXI with the ridership of these rental bikes dropping about 40% compared to 2019.
The Grande inauguration citoyenne du Réseau Express Vélo (bicycle boulevard) attracts 4,000 cyclists on St Denis Street. This is good news for cyclists, but what will the effect of the increased bicycle traffic there be on local merchants? Studies elsewhere say that the effect is usually positive...

The Jacques Cartier bridge bike path, a critical link for cyclists crossing the St Lawrence River, will stay open this winter. Keeping the bike path open in winter has been a demand by cycling groups for decades
Political polarization on bike paths? This article talks about merchants and citizens ferociously opposed to new bike paths built either as anti-COVID-19 measures or as part of the Réseau express vélo (REV), a sort of bicycle highway system. Cyclists in favour of the new bike paths launch a boycott of merchants opposed to them... The irony, as mentioned by Vélo québec spokesperson Suzanne Lareau, is that many of these merchants would probably see increased sales with the new ...bike paths. Multiple studies in different cities point in this direction, indicating that cyclists are an important clientele for most stores. (some exceptions include furniture stores and lumber yards) Perhaps all cyclists, when making purchases, should tell store personnel: "J'achète chez vous et je suis venu à vélo."/"I am buying stuff in your shop and I rode a bicycle to get here."
Bogota, the capital of Colombia, has long been a leader in in Latin America for bicycle infrastructure. The country also produces many good professional cyclists who have sometimes competed at the Mardis Cyclistes

What went wrong with massive bike share programs in China: a study of boom and bust. But there seem to be few parallels with Montreal's BIXI program...
Looking at the reasons why some motorists hate cyclists. The dollar figures given here about road maintenance are from Australia, but it is the same pattern in Canada & the USA. In other words, fuel taxes do not pay for all road building & maintenance costs; a big chunk is paid for out of general revenues. This means that cyclists who do not even own a car are already paying for road maintenance. Other studies have shown that it is in fact motorists whose actions are subsidized by governments...

What the pandemic has done for bicycling: Where statistics are available, they show huge rises in bicycle use across Europe and America. In Switzerland, the number of kilometres cycled since early March has risen by 175% (and fallen by 11% for trams). In Philadelphia cycling is up by 151%; usage of New York’s bike-share scheme rose by 67% in March, year-on-year. Even in Copenhagen, the two-wheel capital of the world, Jens Rubin, of Omnium Bikes, says his shop has been busier than ever...

It was 45 years ago this month that activities began for a group originally called Citizens on Cycles, demanding infrastructure and services for bicycles in Montreal at a time when there was nothing. That group soon changed its name to Le Monde a bicyclette and dramatically changed Montreal. Over the subsequent decades, members of that group went to jail to fight for bike paths and access to the metro. When faced with deaf ears from authorities, the group thought of imag...inative ways to draw media attention. In this photo Robert Bicycle Bob Silverman dressed as Moses and tells reporters he knows how cyclists can cross the St. Lawrence River (at the time, bicycles were banned from all the bridges). Today, Montreal has some 700km of bike paths and is recognized as the #1 bicycling city in North America by the international Copenhagenize index. All cyclists in Montreal owe a huge debt to the valiant cycling pioneers of Le Monde a bicyclette

More information about the famous "study" (actually a computerized simulation) that indicates cyclists can expel virus droplets up to 65 feet (20m). Here a virologist critiques the study--that has not been peer reviewed or published. Droplet size is an important factor that this "study" did not take into account
As we mentioned yesterday, the postponing of the Tour de France until Aug. 29-Sept. 20 poses a serious challenge to the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Quebec & Montreal, scheduled for Sept 11-13. The Tour de France is delayed, now scheduled to start Aug. 29 and finishing Sept 20. Originally, the TdF was scheduled for June 27--July 19. The new dates for the #tourdefrance now have it overlapping with the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Quebec and Montreal, scheduled for Sept. 11 & 13...
How do false rumours start? Often when people do not cite sources... On April 8, Russian author Jurgen Thoelen, who presents himself as an entrepreneur and an athlete, published an opinion piece on the Medium blog platform that went viral in a few hours: "according to a Belgian and Dutch study" , he wrote, you should not, in our era of social distancing, stand within 5 meters behind a runner or cyclist, because of the "cloud" of droplets that he would emit in his wake. If it ...is a training cyclist, the safe distance is even 20 meters, However, no study was mentioned in the text. His source, Thoelen acknowledged, was an article read in Belgian media that morning, which quoted Dutch researcher Bert Blocken of Eindhoven University of Technology, author with his three Belgian and Dutch animation IT colleagues. No study was mentioned in the Belgian media article either. As for Blocken, he is neither a microbiologist nor an epidemiologist, but an expert in aerodynamics.
I am not the type to "chew the rag" but today, I was treated like a plague victim while doing my grocery shopping because I went there by bike. The facts first: I went to the Métro Market where I have been going for 20 years with my 2 bags to fill. A security guard first refused me entry. Apparently, grocery stores refuse to bring their own bags, which I understand perfectly. I had a mask and latex gloves, showing my concern for the pandemic. After negotiation, we accepted th...at I enter with my bags on the lower tray of the basket, with a promise not to touch it. At the exit, I myself put my food in my bags, aware that the staff should not approach it. So far, nothing to complain about. But, when I met the guard at the exit, he warned me, grumbling, that I should not return by bicycle in the future, that he would block my access. It got stuck in my throat. Crucial detail: the scene took place in Laval. It was so incongruous to ride my bike there to do my shopping that I had to patiently explain to the caretaker that I could not put my bicycle bags in the car since I was on my bike and not in my car . It was for him as if I was doing my grocery shopping on camels. In Montreal, do we live this kind of ban? Am I wrong to be offended by it? Is it from the guardian a "nervous poop" in the face of the improbable, the unknown, and the inexplicable or is it a company policy? See more

We just heard on CBC that bike boutiques offering repairs have now been added to Quebec's list of "essential services" and are allowed to stay open
This is actually a bike path in western Laval. High water levels mean that many parts of the bike path are now submerged. A few roads are submerged, too
So car mechanics offer an essential service, but bicycle mechanics do not?? Bixis are an essential service, but bicycle repair shops are not?#inconsistent
The 35th edition of the Tour de Beauce is postponed, hopefully until late summer 2020 .... #tourdebeauce #coronavirus

When did doing the Tour de l'Ile de Montreal first become popular? This article in La Presse from October 19, 1918 mentions 2 cyclists who just established a new speed record for doing the 90 mile (145km) tour.
Montreal-based Dorel is hit by supply chain problems in China, in part caused by COVID19 Dorel is the owner of such bike brands as Cannondale, GT, Mongoose, Caloi, IronHorse and Schwinn sold to independent bike dealers (IBDs). Dorel also has its Pacific Cycle division, working with the mass merchant and sporting goods channel, selling to large box stores. Collectively, this makes Dorel one of the world’s top bike manufacturers.
Could the coming of the Réseau express métropolitain - REM create a new bicycle bridge over Riviere des Prairies from Laval (Ile Bigras) to Montreal (Pierrefonds)? The railroad bridge for the St Jerome exo train line over the Riviere des Prairies is now equipped with a "passerelle" for cyclists + pedestrians. With the right pressure, perhaps the same could happen for the Deux-Montagnes train line (future REM line)

Cyclist gets a $128 traffic ticket for using the bike path on Jacques Cartier Bridge. As per the sign in the background, the bike path is closed to the public in winter, supposedly for "safety reasons." While the public is banned, a select group of 25 cyclists is allowed to use the path. Cycling groups have been advocating for years that the bike path be opened all year to the general public. And then there is the Lachine Canal bike path...
