It was on this day in 1976, THE BAND made their final performance; 'The Last Waltz' held on American Thanksgiving Day, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Who out there remembers Lance Anderson's 'The Last Waltz a Musical Celebration of The BAND' from the 2018 Mariposa Folk Festival? ... https://youtu.be/rvtpNzoOLI8
Getting ready for a 4 show weekend at the legendary Peter’s Players in Gravenhurst! It’s great to be playing again with my fellow bandmates and friends music that we love. It looks like this is the look of the new normal. #plexiglass #protection #thelastwaltz
A few more tickets for today's 4:30PM show. LIVE music. it has been so long. We are doing two shows a day at Peter's Players with a 1/3 of the regular audience. We are doing two shows a day to make it economically feasible. The other three shows are SOLD OUT.... Peter's is up for sale, so this might be our last chance to play this hallowed hall. Still 10 tickets + left for the 4:30 show Friday. COVID restrictions in place. Masks must be worn, plexiglass barrier, Slightly shortened show.

In January of 1965, Dayton Stratton called (I was in Oklahoma and no longer living in Fayetteville) to tell me that Levon (now as Levon and the Hawks) would be playing that weekend at the Fondalite Club in Tulsa. I lugged my 47-lb. Wollansak tape recorder up to the club where I even with Bill Avis’ help was, unfortunately, not able to set my two mics up in a good position (not very good quality because of that, which gave me the inclusion of lots of crowd noise and ‘cli...nking' of glasses, plus there’s been some degradation of the 55-year-old tape itself). It is what it is, but at least I came away with 18 songs of the most arranged and rehearsed, killer bar band on the planet! Still a few months away from hooking up with Dylan and three years from their shedding the bar band tag with their (inter)national debut as The Band. Click on the YouTube URL below and this is Levon singing High Heel Sneakers with Robbie playing his early, bluesy style (that would later completely change along with their band’s musical style). He was still on his early favorite a white Telecaster with Rosewood fingerboard and for the first time I saw him playing a Traynor amp instead of an old, late-‘50s 4x10 Fender Bassman). Side note: Speaking of those old Fender Bassman amps, with Ronnie Hawkins and before Garth, Richard and Rick came aboard), it was Levon, Robbie, Rebel Payne on bass and Stan Szelest on Piano. Robbie, Rebel and Stan (with contact mikes on the piano) were all playing through Bassman amps with Szelest using a spare one as a stool. Ronnie would sometimes actually use one for his vocal mike! Looking forward to seeing our friends again during these trying times. J.L Avis. UPDATE! Both shows are now SOLD OUT! Friday November 13th and Saturday November 14th.... Stay tuned to see if a matinee show will be added. See more
Looking forward to November.
Keep the faith folks, keep safe and stay cool on this beautiful "HOT" day. We miss all or friends and fans and so look forward to seeing you out there down the road. J.L Avis
From Sandra B Tooze. Here's a review of my Levon Helm biography from Quill & Quire, the publication that serves the Canadian publishing and bookselling communities. This reviewer really understood what I was trying to achieve with this book:
LEVON: From Down in the Delta to the Birth of THE BAND and Beyond
Please tune in on May 26th which would have been Lee's 80th birthday to hear Sandra B Tooze talk about Levon and her new book. Both Dad and I are amongst many of Levon's family and close friends in this book. Please spread the word if you can. Jerome Levon Avis
