The Lyceum Gallery 05.02.2021

Today The Lyceum students are working toward a pivotal point in their science fair projects: the research question. The question they write, informed by the literature reviews they have completed, will tee up the focus of their study and define their variables. Sensing the need for a light break, we played a little game with some shots I took down the microscope. This is a game you can play along at home. Here, in randomized order, are titles of the slides: dog hair, artery, pine needle, peacock feather, heart, onion skin, wool, spinal cord. Feel free to drop your guesses in the comments chain.

Thanks for the shoutout Garrisons! Lyceum students produced this calendar to feature local businesses that inspired them. Felix has been getting his locks trimmed at Garrisons for some time. They know him there, he likes the haircuts and most importantly, he feels connected to his community. The Lyceum’s Artist in Residence Marina Dempster and student Paloma spoke to Gill Deacon on CBC’s Here and Now on Friday about this project. Food bank use has doubled in the past year so ...please help us support the Parkdale Community Food Bank and the 2000 community members they serve each month. Link to the gallery’s website where you can go to purchase one is in our bio. Repost from @garrisonsbarbershop Like Queen West isn’t cool enough! The students and teachers at the local @theorchardlyceum School have put together this awesome calendar to raise funds for the Parkdale Food Bank. These thoughtful and creative students each named a neighbourhood business and how they changed to protect the community from covid. . It’s a new year and a great time to do some good by helping those who are fighting just to get a decent meal. Visit the tagged Lyceum page and purchase one of these limited quantity calendars for $30.The community needs you and these kids deserve to be rewarded for having big hearts, big ideas and the will to follow through on them.Big thanks to Mr. Man, Felix for including Garrison’s.We can’t wait to have you back in the shop buddy! . . . . #ittakesavillage #bigheart #dogood #artschool #queenstw#kidsrock #togetherwewill#localbarbershop #parkdalefoodbank #thesix #supportsmallbusiness #supportyourlocalbarbershop #torontobarbershop #covidsucks #feedyourcommunity #goodwork See more

T/RUST by Marina Dempster is currently in the gallery’s front window. Beautifully packaged with the artist’s statement included, a gift from the Sovereign/ties collection is an original, meaningful message of intention as well as a beautiful object to wear or frame. Listen to the interview on the Lyceum Gallery’s newly opened viewing rooms to hear Marina talk about the interweaving of words and imagery that became these narratives. T/RUST By Marina Demspter... 24x24 inches Printed on 100% Habotai silk Sewn by @fashionexchangefx Among other found objects, I love to collect rusty washers on my path. These little treasures, to me, feel like sacred offerings and surprise rewards for noticing and presence. In connecting these metaphorical dots, I regard them as reminders of our innate wholeness and to surrender to life’s natural timing and mystery. Marina is the Artist in Residence at The Lyceum where she shares her wisdom, guidance and innumerable talents with the students each day. We are so rich for having her as a mentor here. New co-project with the Lyceum classes and Marina will be announced soon. You can acquire works from the Sovereign/ties collection on the website and if you wish, the studio elves will even package and send it off to your intended with a personalized note from you! #Canadianart#collectiveart#queenstwest#shoplocal#makitcount#21 See more

Christina Gapic captured this beautiful moment at the Sovereign/ties opening yesterday. This collection of 21 silk scarves printed on Habotai silk by The Toronto Fashion Exchange is showing in The Lyceum Gallery right through to the end of 2020. In numerology, the number 21 is symbolic of success, completion and the fulfilment of desires. The path you travel may ask you to dig deep, resist, lend strength and persevere and many of the works in this show speak to resilience. Ea...ch scarf is an expression of individual motivation but as a whole, they are a mustering, an assembly, a convening of spirits who are ready to move forward into 2021 with vigour and purpose. With deep gratitude to @marinadempsterstudio for envisioning and realization of this project. This is one of the so many ways your residency has brought life and lift to the Lyceum. #sovereignties #canadianart#collectiveaction#queenstw#shoplocal See more
