The Muskoka Stone Co 15.12.2020

Our sidewalk job at the @muskokabrewery went great! The weather forecast is finally showing some summer weekend weather and we’re sure this will see a lot of traffic.

The guys are doing a great job on this walkway from the dock to the guest house on one of our island sites. The dock was affected by the recent flooding and is a touch out of level, but the landing is bang-on. Luckily we have 3 sites on the go that are all a 1 minute boat ride from each other right now on Lake Muskoka - that doesn’t happen too often!

In our trade we don’t often get to do things the easy way, but sometimes we do. Every job, we find another way to utilize our crane. It’s proven to be quite a useful asset.

This wall is nearing its completion, just a few touch ups to make on the driveway-side. The guys did an amazing job keeping the pillars square with this rough stone! .

The May long weekend is upon us and our retail yard is in full swing. All of our trucks are steady running deliveries of stone, mulch, topsoil, and a variety of aggregate! Swing by or call in to order the best quality landscape materials in town!

Great entranceway to an existing cottage with winding steps from the driveway and another small set of step up to the wood-shed. All steps made with 3-inch sawn flagstone and chiselled on-site. The patio is made to match with 2-inch sawn flagstone. Underneath it all is a solid concrete pad with enough rebar to ensure this work lasts a lifetime as well as drainage to catch the water from the driveway and eaves trough. Can’t wait to see it all landscaped!

Fireplace season is in full swing - and so are our showroom updates. We have installed over five new gas and wood-burning units in our showroom over the last couple of weeks with some new styles of veneer to match. This fireplace in particular was given a square-cut stone veneer. We finished it off with an enhancing stone sealer to bring the colours of the natural granite out and provide some protection.

We are spending some time over the next couple of weeks updating our showroom with some new Fireplace units as well as some new styles of stonework. Yesterday the guys finished off this square-cut granite that fits nicely with the linear style of the FPX4415 fireplace that it surrounds. Later this week we will be adding a colour-enhancing sealer to this stonework to make the colours in the stone pop out.

Had a great time at the World of Concrete Show in Las Vegas this week. Great to see all of the new products coming out that are changing the trade and getting to talk with the manufacturers of some new products as well as some that we already use. Was also great to see some of the competitions and activities such as the fastest trowel on the block as seen on this video.

Big news! Our new concrete forms are here - there's a new player in town. We are excited to have another excellent service to offer our customers.

While the stone jobs are usually more eye-catching it is important to show some love to our block layers too. They have done an awesome job on this four-story addition to the Gardens of Parry Sound Retirement Home.

It's been both a hot and dry summer here, but eventually the rain will always come. We finished up this project just in time for the heavy rainfalls that we have been experiencing all this week. This old century home still sits on a stone foundation in many areas - some areas less than four feet below grade. We dug down 8 feet and laid a block foundation up to 4 feet below grade, poured a new footing atop of that, and formed/poured concrete to cover and retain the exposed stone foundation. While we were at it we installed drainage pipe into a catch basin fitted with a sump pump. Lastly we applied a waterproofing membrane to the entire foundation to ensure that this basement stays dry for years to come!

We laid our sod down just in time before the big rainfall yesterday. This was the last step in cleaning up and finishing up one of our big spring projects for the long-weeked. This project featured a few sets of stairs all laid with natural-split flagstone and the main showpiece - the 180 ft. wall that spans accross the property - laid in ledgerock too give the wall a softer and more natural look. This wall allowed us to retain enough ground to provide a larger lawn area as ...well as the gardens you see. In the years to come the planting will fill in the gardening beds and the vines will work their way up the wall to soften it even more and give the impression that it was built many years ago. The second wall shown was laid with different stone all together and was a good trial to show the customer what they wanted to use for the main wall. The second wall (built first) was laid in a more tightly-jointed drystack fashion using more of a variety in the colours of the stone used. The capping and steps were laid with sawn flagstone that was more predominatly black in colour instead of the grey and pink seen in the rest of the flagstone on the property. Let us know what you think!

This wall is too big for one picture! We are excited to have some professional photography done on this site upon completion as well as some others to share with you in the coming months. The push is on now to meet our deadlines for the summer season as well as taking on some newer jobs - but we are managing to stay on schedule.

This week we backfilled a wall that has been under construction for a couple of months now. We used over 100 tonnes of clear stone and were tasked with getting it to some areas we couldn't fit a skid steer into. Luckily our friends at Cooper Equipment Rentals in Bracebridge helped us out with this tracked-buggy shown in the first picture to get around the corner of the veranda and down the steep slope where the stairs will be built. As always - great and timely service as well as a reliable machine that was perfect for the task at hand.

We started on a new site this week that we had previously done some work on last summer. It’s always a great feeling to be called on by a former client as a testament to our quality and craftsmanship. This project will include two large staircases, flagstone pathways, and a large wall that spans a good portion of the property.

The spring weather couldn't have come at a better time for us as we wrap up this portion of our board-form wall project. Miles of rebar, boards, and concrete has culminated in this wall (and the foundation beneath of course). As mentioned in our last post this wall has no square-corners and the only straight stretch is a three-foot long portion. It featured a random, non-radial curve around the whole project. It had a lot of quirks including many steps and ledges that were all at different heights. The finished product was to resemble the boards it was formed with to provide a wood-looking finished and it turned out great!

Happy belated New Years everyone! 2018 has kicked off to both a cold and busy start - too busy for facebook if you can believe it. We have found ourselves doing a little bit of everything from concrete forms and block foundations to stone fireplaces and steps. We look forward to the new and exciting things that 2018 will bring us and hope to continue doing what we do best - providing beautiful work that stands the test of time.
