Meet Captain Phil Watson from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia! Captain Watson started sailing in Mahone Bay when he was 10 years old. At age 16, he began schooner saili...ng and at 21, a friend convinced him to apply as a deckhand on Bluenose II. This year marks Capt. Watson’s 33rd year aboard Bluenose II and 19th year as Captain. Capt. Watson’s favourite part of the season was seeing people come out to meet the ship seeing cars along the roads throughout the province, people standing along the shore waving, people posting photos of the ship out of their kitchen windows and boats sailing, motoring, or paddling out to meet the ship. He appreciates the considerable effort put into seeing and celebrating the ship this year. What keeps him coming back? A combination of the technical challenge, seeing the positive change in young crew every year, looking after something he cares about, and his dedication to preserving a Canadian Icon. : : RCAF
