The Paris Dog Parlour 31.10.2020

It’s skunk season! If your dog happens to get sprayed, here’s how to handle it in the most effective way you can. 1. Check and make sure your dog isn’t hurt 2. Do NOT get your dog wet! Skunk spray is an oil that sits on top of the fur. When it gets wet, it thins out and will get into the dog’s pores, which will make the smell worse and longer-lasting.... 3. Make a mixture of: 1 quart hydrogen peroxide + cup baking soda + 1 teaspoon liquid soap/dish soap (tip: Dawn works the best because of its degreasing properties!) 4. Apply the solution to your dog’s dry fur (note: this will still help get rid of the smell if your dog is already wet, but works much better on dry fur). 5. The dog’s face is usually what gets sprayed first, so make sure you get this area, but be careful around the eyes, ears, and mouth. Definitely avoid any wounds, as the solution can cause stinging and be an irritation. 6. After applying the solution, leave on for no longer than 10 minutes, as it can be harsh on the skin. Leave on for a shorter period if your dog has sensitive skin or a finer coat. Also, wrap the dog in a towel to deter them from licking their skin and in turn, licking the solution. Do NOT leave your dog unattended. 7. Now you can bathe the dog. First, lather your dog in dog shampoo (which is always useful to have on hand!). You should lather the shampoo before you get the dog wet, and make sure to be as thorough as possible. Once you’ve lathered all of your dog’s fur, still being careful around the eyes, ears, and mouth, it’s safe to rinse. 8. Let your dog dry completely. The smell will be stronger when your dog is still wet, so waiting until your dog is completely dry will give you the truest sense of how much the scent has been treated. 9. After waiting a few days, call the groomer! Most groomers will refuse to take a freshly sprayed dog, so it’s best to wait 2 - 3 days before booking an appointment. 10. When you bring your dog to the appointment, throw away the collar that your dog was wearing when it got sprayed and bring a new or clean one when you come to pick them up. The collar is unlikely to ever be completely rid of the scent, and you don’t want to introduce it back onto your freshly washed dog. Now’s the time for a wardrobe upgrade. Tips & Tricks: 1. The solution can turn black and dark coats slightly reddish. This is perfectly normal and temporary, and will grow out in no time. 2. Wear rubber gloves when applying the solution, shampooing, and handling a freshly sprayed dog. 3. You can add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the solution to help mask the skunk scent a little more, but we wouldn’t recommend any other essential oils. 4. The solution is effective, but is harsh on the skin, so keep a close eye on your dog and use your judgement and knowledge of your dog’s fur and skin sensitivity

Puppies! Here at the Parlour we offer a 'First Puppy Groom: an Introduction to Grooming for you and your new addition. We've done this all along and this helps get your pups used to the smells and sounds of their groomer and of the parlour itself. This includes some play time with each of the parlour ladies, time to wander and sniff at their own pace, then we wander with them near the tub, hand dryers, let them discover the brushes and tools. Then they get a very gentle... first pro bath with a chamomile puppy shampoo/conditioner, a lap blow dry for their first time, nail trim, ear wipe and any trimming depending on breed around eyes and face, paws, pads, sanitary area. We except pups 4 months or older with 1st 2 sets of shots. Prior we suggest if your puppy get dirty to wipe the area as under 4 month old pups cannot regulate their temperature properly so sudden temperature changes are not suggested. Check out some of our recent sweethearts! See more
