More Perths getting ready for action in Arielli.

The Perth Regiment 09.01.2021

Here is a very well done video dealing with the wartime signs Canadian soldiers encountered in theatre during the war. There is a wealth if information, and something not talked about. There is even a Perth Regiment part in it! https://www.youtube.com/watch

Here is a National Film Board film that was shown 80 years ago to Canadians at home or abroad. Some of you might recognize the narrator's voice as Canadian actor, Lorne Greene, or the "Voice of Doom" as he was then known as. There are some good details of Canadians in battledress, and kit in use during the early war period in England. https://youtu.be/gavcGmUE7tI

Here is a Perth running the 15k Challenge run in the 2018 Army Run. We were supporting the event's Italian Campaign theme that year. The Shovel Runner group might not be running this year, but we are still supporting the Canada Army Run in the virtual world! We're all looking forward to next year!

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the 1942 Dieppe Raid. Today we would like to focus on the units who were involved in the raid. While the raid itself was an opera...tional failure, those who died did not die in vain. Following the raid, the attack was studied in-depth by allied command to ensure the same mistakes werent repeated on D-Day. Thanks to the Dieppe Raid and the lessons learned, casualties were kept considerably lower than expected for Operation Neptune. One of the biggest lessons was that the coordination of naval and air power with an advancing land force from the sea is essential. Implementing this led to a decisive victory in Normandy less than two years later. The Canadian Army units that stormed the beach in Dieppe are: - The Kings Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC). Calgary - The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. Montreal - The Calgary Highlanders. Calgary - The Essex Scottish Regiment. Disbanded in 1954 - Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal. Montreal - The Queens Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Winnipeg - The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment). Hamilton - The Royal Regiment of Canada. Toronto - The South Saskatchewan Regiment. Placed on the Supplementary order of battle list in 1968 - The Toronto Scottish Regiment (Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mothers Own). Toronto

Back before we had the internet...texts ...email, you had to wait for Gavin Watt's newsletters. This was the equivalent of the arrival of the Christmas catalogues as a kid ( If you are too young to know..ask your parents). These newsletters were a mix of event notices, regimental news and the "sales" section where items were bought and sold. You had to be quick to get items if you were interested ..at prices much lower than the shows. Here's an example of a page

Seventy-nine years ago, on this day, the Canadian Womens Army Corps (CWAC), a milestone in the history of womens participation in the Canadian military, was f...ormed during the Second World War. Faced with a personnel shortage in war services and production, the Canadian government announced the formation of the Canadian Womens Army Corps on 13 August 1941 with the goal of freeing up men for combat. Canadian women were mobilized, for the first time, for service in the #CAF and assigned jobs involving what some/many considered to be traditional female work such as cooking and clerical duties. However, women also pioneered roles in mechanized and technical fields during this time. For many of the women who enlisted, patriotism was their primary motivation. Others joined in search of new opportunities and adventure and the prestige of serving in uniform. Members of the CWAC were pioneers for female members of todays CAF. Their pride, discipline and dedication helped overcome societys fears associated with the erosion of traditional morality and femininity. Today, women can enroll in any CAF occupation and serve in any environment. In all trades CAF men and women are selected for training and career opportunities in exactly the same way based on rank, qualifications and merit. Canadian women have never hesitated to step up when called upon to serve their country. What are you waiting for? Be a part of our history: https://Forces.ca #ForcesJobs #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #Canada #History #OnThisDay #OTD #Inspiration #Motivation #InspiringWomen #Women #WomenEmpowerment #Career #Goals #CareerGoals

My father, Douglas Burke, fought with the IV PLDG in Italy. He wrote a memoire of his military experience for the family. On the 6th of June, he managed to get into Rome. Here is his day in the Eternal City:

One of our members, Saverio Malatesta, brought this to my attention which is really interesting. He makes reference to the name "Norman Casey" which is scratched on a wall of a house in Villa Grande near Ortona. Saverio managed to discover that Norman Casey was a Canadian soldier, a member of the Carleton York Regiment, who passed away last year on November 28, 2019. What an amazing discovery...thank you Saverio for helping to remember Mr. Casey. Attached is a photo which shows the wall in question and a link to the obituary for Mr. Casey. https://www.fundyfuneralhome.com/obituary/Norman-Casey?fbclid=IwAR3n2ULFKzO_ohAdBKhSC_cdzFeuJDv3eRxkDF43LXfaWS1TKz6OrJGRavU

After cost overruns, we ended up with a monument unlike few in the world. If you haven't seen it yet in person, I'd recommend to pay it a visit. Thousands of Great War veterans went to the monument's unveiling, and it was one of the few functions King Edward did before he resigned later that year.

Regiments and their personalities as described by Lt-Gen. Guy Simonds in an old CBC interview. I wonder what personality the original Perth Regiment had? Based on what Simonds says in the video, it was probably something closer to the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2665080717

76 years ago Rome fell yesterday, which was a very big deal, but it was overshadowed quickly with the events that occured the day after on the Northern coast of France. This forever resulted in all troops fighting in Italy, like the Perths, to be called: "D-Day Dodgers." It was an unjust slight against those troops fighting very hard in Italy, but those Italian Campaign troops made the term their own, and took it with pride. Here is a montage showing Canadians arriving in the UK, Training, and landing on Juno Beach 76 years ago today.

Happy 100th birthday to British WWII veteran and fundraising superstar Captain Tom Moore! He set out to raise 1,000 for the UKs National Health Service by wal...king 100 laps in his garden (with the aid of a walker). He ended up raising more than 29 million ($50+ million Cdn) so far. His gesture of generosity and determination inspired countless other acts of charity and even a #1 hit song in the UK. He continues to inspire us all, with a new goal of 100 more laps for charity. Capt. Toms giving page is still accepting donations. https://www.bbc.com//captain-tom-moore-celebrates-100th-bi

He later became a sergeant and was an acting platoon commanderleading his own section until the end of the war. #Netherlands75 #CanadaRemembers See more
