Representation matters everywhere and that applies to children’s books, too. This image from 2018 by David Huyck should make you stop in your tracks and say ‘Hey, this needs to change and it needs to change yesterday.’ As an author of children’s fiction with predominantly white characters, I am acknowledging that I must do better. In the past few weeks, I have seen so many inspiring, incredible people, especially kids, demanding change; and rightfully so. And it’s my promise to these future leaders, thinkers, world changers and readers that I will do better for you. Every child deserves representation, and I am here to learn and grow FOR YOU!

We will be posting on FB and Instagram every so often to remind you, also, that The Popchuck Chronicles series is perfect for middle school aged kids - especially if your child is a reluctant reader. Simply read the first couple of c...hapters of Popchuck's Ghost with them, and watch them take off! A real bonus is to have them write to me when they have finished each book, and I WRITE BACK! Handwritten letters are THE BEST, and it is another skill that you can teach them. In fact, if you email me, ask for a lesson plan for that activity, too! READING MAKES YOUR KIDS SMART!!

It’s definitely strange times lately, and not the kind of strange we normally revel in, that’s for sure. As we attempt to define that new normal, I think it’s important to remember that we are all in this together and that sharing skills and resources to get each other through the days is a great way to strengthen our community and hearts. With that in mind, using my 30+ years of experience in children’s education and helping parents create literature-rich environments ...and experiences for their kids, I’ve developed a free Parent Guide. The essence of the guide is to allow kids to really get the most out of what they’re reading and for parents to be able to ‘book-talk’ with them. This guide is not intended for use specifically with The Popchuck Chronicles; rather it can be used with any novels your children are reading! It is chock full of activities that allow your daughter or son to express themselves in response to the books they read. Mostly, it will provide parents with easy ways in which to provide literacy experiences while homeschooling. Mr. Joel Gibson has been working with The Popchuck Chronicles and used the opportunity to lead his students through a formal letter writing exercise. What did they write about? Well, they wrote to the Disney Corporation to let them know that they think Disney should make movies or a t.v. series about The Popchuck Chronicles!!... I'm BLOWN AWAY by their enthusiasm, and especially grateful to Joel for his work with the students. What an incredible weekend! Line ups out the door for two days straight. Sword swallower, creepy Santa, and so many talented artists. Our favourite part though? Talking to all you amazing weirdos about BOOKS! Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat, buy books and check out our swag. We couldn’t be any happier!
