Battle of the Ancre, November 13 to 18, 1916 Battle of the Somme - July 1 to November 18, 1916 The Battle of the Ancre was the last big British operation of the... year. These last battles effectively ended the Battle of the Somme, which started on July 1, 1916 and cost thousands of lives and many thousands of wounded. Canada's last battles of 1916 were Regina Trench and Ancre Heights. 400 Canadians were killed on this final day, then both sides stopped because of the weather. The battle became notable for the importance of air power and the first use of the tank in September. Tanks were still in the stages of development and were prone to breaking down. It was a different sort of Remembrance Day today, not being able to attend the cenotaph service as I have for many years. But, it was a solemn honour to attend... a community service organized at Remembrance Gardens at River Rd and Veterans Memorial Parkway, to represent both the City of London, and the Victory Legion Branch #317 (my home branch) in laying a wreath. Thank you to Sean Wilson, Don Ford and the rest of their team for organizing this. I was joined by a great partner for east London, MP Lindsay Mathyssen, representing the Parliament of Canada to lay the federal wreath. We also had the pleasure of standing with Debbie Legg, whose father was a WWII veteran of the Canadian Forces deployed to Hong Kong. The Hong Kong veterans flag was added to Remembrance Gardens this year, marking the 75th anniversary of their liberation from Japanese POW camps. Working with Debbie, I've also been able to have a plaque honouring those who served in Hong Kong to the "hall of honour" at City Hall. Finally, a special thank you to the Canadian Forces for arranging Remembrance Day fly overs in communities across Canada today (including the Hercules fly over here in London). We are thankful for your service. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Remembrance Day is important to this group, but as you can see from this video we Remember the Fallen and Honour our Veterans for much of the year. They deserve it. Hopefully we will have a better video soon. We Will Remember! https://www.youtube.com/watch
