The Adventure Therapy Project 24.12.2020

Can you guess what I did on my lunch break to get some fresh air and get moving?

The Adventure Therapy Project 21.12.2020

The sun going down won't stop Brody from taking full advantage of the deep snow we finally have!! How many of you got to go out in the snow today?

The Adventure Therapy Project 10.12.2020

So a question that we commonly get is "do you force your kids to go outside and do the activities you do?". So as a family we try to schedule outdoor activities whenever we can and yes sometimes our kids aren't as excited as we are.... however, much like eating healthy and exercising, it is important to make getting outside a habit. Luckily for us, our kids are in the habit and today Aubree dragged us out the door. She LOVES what we call a "Survival Day". We go into the woo...ds and set up a shelter, she builds a fire and we hangout. So our advice to everybody is to always try to make getting outside a habit. For kids, it's also important to let them have some say in the activities. Aubree has our next Survival Day planned.... We were missing Smores today . #theadventuretherapyproject #explorens #getoutsidens #healthykids #survival

The first snow storm of 2021 means we have some happy kids! How are you enjoying this gift from Mother Nature?

The Adventure Therapy Project 14.11.2020

"We explore not to escape life, but for life not to escape us" -Unknown A 30km bike ride, the storm was trying to beat us home but a bit of adventure made it that much more fun. Thanks to David for setting the pace, this stuff is so much more fun with great company.... #theadventuretherapyproject #explorens #bicyclens #getoutsidens #humanpowered

Two of our favourites! Keegan and Brody made bird feeders out of bird seed, oats, peanut butter, bacon fat and oranges! We'll be doing a post tomorrow on how to make some fun and easy bird feeders that anybody can do! Thanks for the support Keegan and Brody! ... #theadventuretherapyproject @ Oxford, Nova Scotia

WOOHOO 2021!!! To be honest, not really a big believer in "Resolutions". We should all work on doing things that make us happier and healthier but we tend to focus in sustainable changes. That being said, each year we like to pick adventures we would like to do, individually and as a family and work to make it happen. Some adventures mean being in good physical health, some can take more financial resources and others we just need to be in a great mindset so our kids get the... most enjoyment possible. So these "goals" in essence get us to make changes in order to make the dream a reality. So comment below a goal adventure(s) you would like to partake in and tag those who you want to go with! Does not have to be a super grand adventure, could be as simple as visiting a certain trail or place. #theadventuretherapyproject

We want to say a big THANK YOU to each and every person who supported us in 2020! The truth is, joy often isn't just in the adventure, but those you adventure with! We have been so lucky to meet, hike, bike and chat with so many of you like minded adventurers over the past year. We have BIG plans for 2021 and look forward to connecting with all you again in coming year! ... #Theadventuretherapyproject

A really cool spot that mixes a bit of history and nature. The Old Parrsboro Dam was a nice way to close out our family adventures for 2020. Our kids love animals (like really LOVE). Its really important that while we encourage our kids to be outside in nature that they understand the impact people have on wildlife and the environment. So today we took a beautiful drive to @hopeforwildlife in Seaforth. We, along with our kids, really enjoyed our visit. It was more than just seeing the animals, it was learning their stories and how many animals Hope for Wildlife helps. Every staff member was truly passionate and p...rovided our two girls with so much info! Highly recommend this spot and I know we will certainly be supporting them and the work they do by donating to this worthy cause! #theadventuretherapyproject #hopeforwildlife #nature #heroes

Likestarsare to the sky, so are thechildren to our world. They deserve to shine! -Chinonye J. Chidolue We held our Stargazing Event tonight and had an awesome crew. We hiked 3k up a mountain to get the best views, and chat about the stars, constellations and so much more. We finished with smores and some telescope lessons. We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas. For some of us, there will be a "Holiday Hangover" of sorts that is not just alcohol induced. The joy and hustle of the season can leave you feeling pretty drained both mentally and physically. Make time to get outside and recharge over the next few days. It can be as simple as checking out the stars, a quick hike.....if your feeling brave try flying a kite today . #theadventuretherapyproject #explorens #getoutsidens #xmas2020

Community Collaboration!! 2020 was tough for many folks! For our Seniors it was especially tough. For many it meant being isolated away from family and friends! That's why when our friend Jill Walsh Black approached us about doing something for the Seniors living at East Cumberland Lodge, we were really excited to work with so many folks to make this small but mighty gesture happen! We approached Oxford Regional Education Centre's Mrs. Baker with an idea and she really helpe...d us to make it happen! We had a whole bunch of elementary students make each of the residents of East Cumberland Lodge XMAS Cards. Thanks to Jill who got us the first names of each resident and a huge thanks to Mrs. Patriquin, Ms. Calder, Miss Hoferichter, Miss Wood, Miss Chafe, Miss Henley, Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Hudson (aka Ashely, who did a fantastic job making this happen!!). Also thanks to Michelle Miers at Shell's Daycare for getting her kids to do a card for each resident!!!! Awesome!! Santa, who joined us for our Hike a few weekends back, made a video that all of the students got to see before doing up their cards! Thanks to all of the students who made the cards, we were truly touched and enjoyed reading all of them before handing them off to Jill to deliver them to the Lodge! Thanks to everybody that had a hand in making this happen and as we hope all of you enjoy the holidays! Cheers! We included the video of Santa the kids got below and will post more pics soon! #theadventuretherapyproject

The next week or two is going to be challenging for adults and kids. Going back to school this year brings with it a new level of anxiety and stress as we all deal and adjust to the changes. Over the next few weeks, take time to make sure you and those you love are getting outside, being active. Whether it be a walk on the beach, a picnic at the park, a bike ride or finding a new set of waterfalls. Fear, anxiety and stress can have such widespread health effects. So make su...re you recognize this and ensure you and your loved ones are taking the time to decompress and time in nature is proven to be a great help! #theadventureterapyproject #mentalhealth #getoutsidens #explorens

Monday Motivation You may remember Lucas. He was the young guy (9YO) who participated in our group ride to Pugwash a few weeks back. Lucas not only rode his trusty single speed 30km to Pugwash, he rode home too! We were so impressed by his achievement we wanted to reward him with a prize! Way to go Lucas!!... Lucas believed he could make the trek and never doubted himself. Kudos to both his parents Donald (who rode with him), and Becky who never forced him to continue, or persuaded him to stop. They simply told him his choices and left it up to him! Every waterfall offers a unique experience. From the trek into the falls, the geography, the traffic, the height and flow of water - all make each special. Some waterfalls speak to people differently and today Aubree found her spirit waterfall. Aubree loved Annandale Falls, including a pretty steep rope desent, which she proudly conquered. A short trek in the Wentworth valley, these falls are beautiful and today there was nobody else around!... Today more than I ever I really needed this reminder. Things are getting so busy with the holiday preparations, work and volunteering that sometimes I forget that my children learn how to relax and find calmness from watching what we do. When they are amped up and I wonder why, I need to remind myself that it is probably because I, too, may be too amped up. This weekend, take some time to slow down. Enjoy listening to the rain this morning. Breathe in that crisp air. Be mindfull and present.

The Adventure Therapy Project 19.02.2020

Last week our adventures included a little more than our usual hiking, biking and camping. We helped take care of our friends chickens, and were gifted with fresh eggs, and went with some friends to their blueberry field and filled some bowls with delicious, plump blueberries. We are so lucky to have such amazing people in our lives who help us teach our kids about the work that goes into the food we eat to fuel our bodies. Adventures outside can be so much more than grand... hikes. They can be picking blueberries, tending the farm, throwing rocks in the river, or laying in the grass and seeing what animal shapes the clouds make. What has been your favourite thing to do outside this summer?

What a blast! In partnership with Cumberland Trails we hosted an ATP Group Ride from Oxford to Sheryls Bakery in Pugwash. We had 20+ Riders join us on the 30km route, showcasing The Great Trail and all it has to offer. In under 3 hours we all made it, including a our youngest rider Lucas Patterson, 9 Years Old (and his dad). The ride was highlighted by a few deer crossings as well! After fuelling up with Sheryls coffee and treats (OMG!!!), a few riders headed back on bike.... Lucas took the road home, to put his total, on a single speed, at over 50km!!!!!! Special thanks to all the riders who came out, it was so great meeting you all! Thanks to Greg Nix, who joined us for the ride, for all the work he does to make these trails accessible and open! Anybody who would like to donate to Cumberland Trails to support the ongoing work can etransfer donations to [email protected]. If we did it again would anybody be game? Maybe a ride to Tata?

I saw this post and had to highlight a few items that show how important getting outside and self-care are for our mental health, especially during these uncertain times with COVID cases on the rise. Even though we aren't in full lockdown mode, we should be vigilant and limiting our social gatherings can take a toll on our mental health so we need to take care of ourselves. **Shared from Sea Light Counselling

Our ATP Summer Shakeup was a blast! We had a great group of girls for a few hours of fun! Thanks to Angela Ward @fitandfrugalrd who got us started with some Zumba (which the kids loved) and a chat about fueling our bodies for adventure and activity. Our world is filled with so many "experts", it was great to have a Registered Dietician explain how food is fuel and what foods provide what nutrients. After that we enjoyed some healthy snacks and finished by having some fun wa...ter wars to beat the heat! All in all a great day. We are still trying to navigate COVID, and look forward to getting back to running more programs! November through to March is a notoriously hard time for us as a family. We have kids, have full time jobs, a small business, I (Mike) help coach two basketball teams (leaving Ashley to do the supper, homework battles, etc...alone ) and it gets dark at 4pm!!! Finding time for self care and getting outside is extremely tough. Throw in the holidays and the every day threat of COVID.......needless to say the next few weeks are going to be tough for us and most of you. Take thi...s as a reminder to slow down, enjoy the small things (no matter how small they may seem) and take care of yourselves. Schedule time for an enjoyable activity (we suggest outside) and remember it does not have to be a grand adventure. If you have no time, it can be as simple as enjoying a cup of coffee outside. We are looking at doing some programs/hikes in the near future but with the recent COVID surge we feel a wait and see approach is warranted.

The Adventure Therapy Project 12.09.2019

We are excited to spend the morning with a great group of kids for our Summer Shakeup! We have a fun morning planned with Angela Ward learning the moves of Zumba and how to fuel our bodies for adventures, followed by another fun SURPRISE :) . Stay tuned for pictures!

I have to be honest..... I hate Disneyland! As a kid growing up, I knew I would never get to go. Being the oldest of four boys, it just wasnt financially possible for my family. Yet everyday, the commercials on TV, the stories friends would tell......uggghh 1 in 4 kids in Nova Scotia live in poverty, the average yearly income of Nova Scotians is just over $31,000. Disney and trips south to many are just a pipe dream. However, there are so many opportunities for adventure, ...travel, recreation that are cheap and accessible for everybody. These opportunities whether they be camping (The Ovens!), visiting waterfalls, going to the beach, are rightin our own province!. The benefits of exploring our "backyard" are endless: we support local economies, foster environmental awareness and improve our own health. There is nothing wrong with going to Disneyland (I am sure my kids would LOVE it), or going south. But we took a $50 dollar tent, $50 in gas and even with a bit of fog and a fireban, we all managed to have a great time. Seeing beaches that stretch for miles, looking in caves, panning for gold, making smores on the BBQ will leave lasting impressions on us and our kids. We were lucky enough to spend some time helping carry some lumber this morning to repair a bridge literally in our back yard. Today was the true definition of "many hands make light work". So many great people came together to make this happen.....and fast! It was done in a flash! When we moved to Collingwood 12 years ago, we were lucky to have two of the best people for neighbors. Shirley and Skip Walsh were amazing! In fact, Aubree still sleeps with the quilt Shirley made ...her when she was born. Skip never hesitated to offer a hand when we were out doing work on our yard or house, always with a smart comment to make us laugh. This is a quality he instilled in his children, as we saw them work hard to repair the bridge today. This is a quality we hope to instill in our children, too. Today was a reminder of the impact Skip and Shirley had on the community as we saw many people give their Saturday morning to repair the bridge dedicated in Skip's memory. We were honored to be a part of this and know we will make many memories on that bridge with our girls. A big thank you to all who helped out and to Jill and Chesley for making sure the bridge was brought back to life.

Great day chasing these guys! We rode from Oxford to Tatamagouche and some of em turned back for the "Metric Century". I enjoyed the 53k and a cold beer, but more importantly riding with great friends and sharing laughs and dust. If you get a chance, The Great Trail is a fantastic spot to walk, run or ride. Thanks to all those who have donated, as a team we have raised $4005 dollars!! So thankful!! And super thanks to those riding on the team, you guys are the best!!!... @greatcyclechallengecanada @thegreattrail #theadventuretherapyproject #bicyclens #greatcyclechallenge #oxford #tatamagouche #rideon @ Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia

We are seeing a lot of posts about Christmas shopping. Don't forget that a shoebox or card with a note offering an adventure of some kind will give memories that will last a lifetime. It doesn't have to be a grand trip. It could be as simple as a walk on a snowy trail. The options are endless.

Getting ready for a big ATP team ride this AM! Stay tuned for updates along the trail! Still time to donate, we are closing in on $4000 raised to fight kids cancer! Thanks for all your support!

Work and school have kept us busy lately, and with it getting darker earlier it's easy to slide into the habit of staying inside. If you are finding yourself sluggish, overwhelmed or even like you are ready to "hibernate", make it a goal to get outside for 120 minutes a week- researchers show that this is good for your mental and physical well being. That's less than 20 minutes a day! Give it a try. Your soul will thank you for it!
