The word "ski" comes from the Old Norse word "skíð", which means "a piece of wood". Modern skiing also owes a big debt to Sondre Norheim who invented Telemark bindings, letting skiers jump and turn in the 1800's. This winter, practice your skiing skills at our very own Boler Mountain! www.bolermountain.com

Being familiar with the importance of having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in every home should be a top priority for everyone! ?! Did you know that statistics show that without a working smoke alarm, you are four times more susceptible to a fire related injury?... Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas, produced when fuel burns without enough air, and exposure to high levels of CO can be extremely harmful. Having a working CO detector in your home will reduce risk of potential exposure. ! Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. ' ! A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound. Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms. When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. Watch this cartoon with the kids for an important lesson on smoke alarms! https://youtu.be/gCMxwSrz5Go

?! Cooking fires are the primary cause of house fires and household injuries. The majority of cooking fires start with one of the following three causes: . ... . . . . ! Never leave food cooking on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven. Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (i.e. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging). Keep children and pets away from cooking areas by creating a three-foot kidfree zone around the stove. Turn pot handles inward so they can’t be bumped and children can’t grab them. Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking. Loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners and catch fire. Never use a wet oven mitt, as it presents a scald danger if the moisture in the mitt is heated. Always keep a potholder, oven mitt and lid handy. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, put on an oven mitt and smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Don’t remove the lid until it is completely cool. Never pour water on a grease fire and never discharge a fire extinguisher onto a pan fire, as it can spray or shoot burning grease around the kitchen, thus spreading the fire. If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you and your clothing. Call the fire department and make sure to have the oven serviced before you use it again. Remember, cooking safety awareness is crucial during food preparation and cooking, as well as during clean-up and daily living. Understanding the hazards present in the kitchen can help you avoid causing an accident!
