Community-Based Research Centre 21.11.2020

Last year, during Summit 2019, A.J. Lowik held this amazing workshop that encouraged participants to reflect on barriers to trans-inclusive reproductive health care. Trans people’s reproductive lives and health care needs prompt a critical consideration of how sex, gender, reproduction, and parenting are tied up together; and how gendered health care service spaces and individual providers are frequently ill-equipped to address trans people’s unique health care needs, including but not limited to their reproductive health care needs.

Did you know that we're in the middle of the #TransgenderAwarenessWeek? A week to celebrate trans individuals and also to raise our collective voices for the trans community.

"It's important to show the community that we exist and that we're here" - Lane MacIntosh, vice-president of the Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife.

This #TransAwarenessWeek, we reflect on the work that remains to be done to ensure that trans youth have access to gender-affirming care. Just last week, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ordered a surgeon to delay a trans teen's top surgery after their mother filed a lawsuit.

Quebec Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette tabled legislation Thursday that would ban conversion therapies. Bill 70, which possesses only 10 articles, clearly stipulates that any conversion therapy is presumed to infringe the right to personal integrity of the person receiving it.

We are pleased to announce Nathan Lachowsky as one of the keynote speakers for the Summit 2020: Resistance & Responsibility. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected our communities? Very few government or public health agencies have collected information to differentiate the experiences of gay, bi, and queer men as well as Two-Spirit and non-binary people from general society. We know from decades of research about the underlying social and health inequities experienced by ou...r communities, but how did COVID-19 and our different public health responses across the country attend to or exacerbate these issues? To address this knowledge gap, CBRC launched a national bilingual COVID-19 survey in August 2020. Using CBRC's previous Sex Now 2019 survey as a pre-COVID baseline, we will learn how this new pandemic impacted our communities. We will also present new collaborative research plans for a novel COVID-19 study for all LGBTQ2+ people across Canada. Learn more about Summit 2020 at https://www.cbrc.net/summit_2020

Our Research Director, Nathan Lachowsky, spoke with CFAX1070’s Adam Sterling to discuss CBRC’s upcoming study of the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ2+ people in Canada, and the importance of participatory, community-led research to better understand and support the health of our communities. "If we can demonstrate a difference or a need that is already likely to be an underestimate of what the true reality is. And I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s so important to engage people from these communities in the work from the start and all the way through. Because it’s only through engaging these folks, and them having control over the research process that we really see something that’s going to make a change that we want to see in the world. - Nathan Lachowsky Check out the interview at the link below!

PrEP: Who’s Not Getting It? It’s been nearly 5 years since Health Canada approved PrEP, yet the highly effective HIV prevention tool remains underutilized or out-of-reach for far too many. Despite PrEP becoming increasingly accessible and well-known, critical gaps remain in reaching many gay, bi, trans, Two-Spirit, and queer men (GBT2Q), including GBT2Q who are Black, Indigenous, or who use drugs. Who has been left behind in our PrEP education and advocacy, and what can ...be done to address these disparities? This panel will highlight findings from PrEP research studies and frontline service provider perspectives to identify key groups who may need greater support to access PrEP. The panel will also provide an open discussion on what service providers, community organizations, and other stakeholders can do to improve equitable access to PrEP for everyone in Canada. Since 2002, CBRC have surveyed gay, bisexual and queer men about their mental health, sex lives and substance use. One consistent finding has been that gay men are much, much more likely to use crystal methamphetamine compared to the general population The 2019 Sex Now Survey found 6.2 per cent of gay men in Alberta had used crystal meth in the previous six months, many times higher than the Canadian population as a whole. Substance use in queer communities is complex. It’s sometimes a response to trauma, but recreational use is also embedded in certain subcultures (for example, meth is popular in the chemsex or party and play scene.
