If you are gifting your time to a charity make sure you send an invoice showing your value. I like to itemize my hours spent and then zeroing out the invoice so they are not charged. This has two benefits: 1. Your books will show value (sale) discounted. It looks good on your bottom line. 2. The charity will know exactly how much time you have given to them. Sometimes they will even give a receipt for your donation (see local laws to be sure).

The best advice I have received from one of my mentors regarding working with children around the office was to get your kids buy-in. By this she meant, get your kids to agree that your work is important and if they help you, by letting you work for a set amount of time, say 2 hours, then they will earn money just like you do. My mentor would give her kids 1% of any sales she made while they allowed her to work. An additional benefit of this is you can also teach your kids about getting paid, saving, and investing money.
