How can we lead organizations when it’s become challenging to predict the future in a world of constant change? We need to be resilient. How would you undergo the task of implementing change in a seemingly Goliath scenario? In 2008, Santander bought up UK financial institutions, including Abbey National, Bradford and Bingley, and Alliance and Leicester, with the goal of achieving formidable retail bank status by unifying the banks under the Santander brand. The goal seemed lofty, however, as they faced the challenge of breaking down processes that had been ingrained into these banks over decades.... They would need a fast-track, systems-led banking model that emphasized clarity, efficiency and best practices. Those who were going to be impacted by the change were fully briefed; risks and issues were discussed and mitigated. Even those who weren’t likely to be impacted by consolidations were given clear messages about the future. The aim of the process was to make sure they didn’t just understand the change, but that they would embrace it. The strategy appeared to work - by 2013, Santander had become one the UK’s leading retail banks and one of the largest providers of savings and mortgages.
