The Cove Country Inn 21.01.2021

Memories of happier times. This weekend would have been the start of the 2021 Blues On The Rideau @ The Cove Inn, Westport Winter Series with the great JACK DE KEYZER BAND returning for their annual appearance. These pics were taken at their show last January - before COVID hit obviously. Check out the packed dance floor and smiling faces. No wonder - Jack's shows are always killer with that dynamite guitar of his and his tight, skilled band. If you look closely you will s...ee Mark Stenzler (and his lovely lady Karen) of BLUES ZEPPELIN RADIO fame. He flew all the way over from Switzerland for Jack's two night stand - that's how much he digs him. And that's The Cove's own Seamus Cowan stepping in on bass for a couple of tunes with Jack and the band. Fun times! Looking forward to many more of them once COVID gets under control, The Cove reopens and BOTR returns. Keep the faith friends. Stay safe and stay strong.

NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 273 Let’s give a big round of applause and a bid of the happiest of farewells to the one and only Mr. Ed Boot, the caretaker of St. Ed...ward Catholic School. He is beloved to both of my boys and many other kids at the school. Such caring and interested person in the safety and well being of the kids. He will be missed! Thanks for everything Mr. Boot! Had a complete blast with Miss Emily and the band as we played at The Isabel Bader Centre in Kingston to release the new record Miss Emily - Live at the Isabel! The record is all live and it’s comprised of tunes from four shows at The Isabel over the last few years. It’s a really accurate document of where she is as an artist and who she is in character! Soulful, talented and frank and funny! I’ll be honest, back a few years ago, we talked about me playing bass in the band and I constantly said no due to feeling I couldn’t commit. I know I can’t commit to every show being in my line of work in the hospitality industry but I’m sure as hell happy to be there when I can! Thanks to all of you in this great band and the crew as well! What a solid soul blues organ trio gig with HOROJO Trio on the weekend for the last of the three shows of the Fall Blues on the Rideau Series 2020! Seriously amazing voice on Jeff Rogers! Glad we finally had them and looking forward to the next time! I can see why they won the Memphis Blues Challenge! AC/DC. Released a new record called Power Up! It’s a classic beauty of rock and roll record and any fan would just to hear this one on repeat. It’s dedicated to co-founder and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young who passed away recently. The surviving members have reunited to give us an inspired record. It’s exciting! There are some real fun things coming up at The Cove this week... Wings ‘n Tunes & Open Mic every Wednesday is bringing back some familiar faces! Dave McCullough, Bill Parsons, Mike Cochrane and of course, Shawn McCullough are going to be back to get into some of those good old times and good old tunes! The Open Mic continues with COVID protocols, please follow. Thanks to Hilary and Billy for coming out to show their talents once again! 5-8pm The Cove is closed Monday and Tuesday this week to prepare for the new winter menu release on Wednesday. Keep an eye out! Tuesdays are usually Eric Uren with a special guest! Incredible singer/guitar player/harmonica player! 5-8pm Thursday is the return of Matt Dickson! A wonderfully positive musical experience! Rock and roll hippiedom at its finest. 5-8pm Friday is Jay Smith aka Smitty. Come round for an honest country rock show. He rarely takes a break! 5-8pm Saturday should be a gas. Yuk Yuk’s comes to town! Been a couple of years now! Patrick Haye is headlining with three other comedians to create a pent up, unleashed comedy show for the ages! 7-10pm $60 + HST Sunday is Shirley Murphy’s grandson Bon Evan’s and his step father Dave Bull from Kingston! A mix of original and cover rock and roll. 5-8pm Next week is: Thu.Nov.26 Manhunt Jazz Night with the Spencer Evans Trio 5-8pm Fri.Nov.27 Benni Vander plays Elton John 5-8 Sat.Nov.28 East Coaster Night with Chris Murphy and Jain McLurg 5-8pm Sun.Nov.29 Steve Stacey and Pat Robillard $50 Check out Jonathan Scott’s Power Trip on PBS. Til next week, Seamus Cowan

NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 274 US Election 2020 is decided. Looks like there will be an official change in government. What does this mean now though? Hard to kn...ow how it got to here. Time to move on and continue with democracy... Shout out to my Great Gram Vera. What an incredible life she has lead and what a strong lady she is! This is no doubt a supremely confusing time for her. She still gets confused why I’m wearing a bandana but to be honest, she’s not the only one. We are so fortunate to have her in our lives to tell the age old tales we will continue to tell! Wanted to give a little shout out to the life and times of Mark’s Cobbler Shop in Perth and all the great people who worked there. In a time when shoe styles and quality are easier to dispose of than buy new, Mark’s found themselves at a crossroad. After decades of strong business, they reluctantly shut their doors. A sign of changing times perhaps? I for one, like many others, will miss them as they have saved some of my soles. To the good times and walking the walk! And I’ll always remember the greeting when asked, how are you?, I would always receive, finer than frogs hair! Tickled pink to receive the newest David Rotundo record! One of those truly magnetic artists! Blues at it's finest! He has always had the best of shows here at The Cove! His latest record is produced by Lee Oskar, the famous fellow harmonica player who also co-founded and played in WAR and who makes his own world renowned harmonicas called Lee Oskar Harmonicas! Thanks for sending me one bud! So great to hear some of our finest still creating against all odds! Very inspiring David! Was fun to go down a bit of memory lane remembering Ben San Pedro, the former Saturday night piano player here at The Cove. He played for years providing that funky, jazzy, pop music that so many loved with my father on crooning vocals! It was a beautiful scene. Mom and dad found an old DVD from when Jim Manuel passed from his wife and our old friend Margaret Fisher. I sang Tears of Rage at his funeral. How time does pass. It's so important for us to remember those who are gone and who left such a positive impression upon us. Aren't we lucky to have Shawn McCullough and the Wings 'n Tunes Band back in operation on Wednesdays at The Cove! "Yeah baby", says Mike Cochrane. Come and join in the fun weekly from 5:30-9pm. Open Mic with safety protocols in place is still happening. Thanks for supporting this great night that keeps us all connected to the talent that is up and coming in this great artistic community! Fun to see one of my long time musical partners Spencer Evans and his talented multi-instrumental son Oscar Evans playing for the city of Kingston to lift some spirits, playing music for all ages. Spencer will be playing with Andy Love and I this Thu.Nov.26 from 5-8pm! It's called Manhunt Jazz Night...who knows why...I guess it was trying to be tongue in cheek with the continuation of Jailbreak Jazz Night back in October. Perhaps it's just more confusing? Either way, let's keep to the idea that it's just all about being entertaining as that's all that Jazz Night has ever been! Oscar will be joining on trumpet etc... Our new friend, artist and supporter Terry AuCoin from Kingston has put together a great initiative to raise money for Loving Spoonful whose mission statement is to "connect people with good food across Kingston & Area. Working toward a healthier, more connected community, they provide programs and champion policies affecting food security, poverty, social inclusion, and community health." Sounds like a good plan to me! Terry has created a fundraising calendar including one of his paintings per month and is fully sponsored by local businesses. Grab one at The Cove for $5! What a Yuk Yuk's Comedy Show we had on Saturday night! It was amazing to see some live stand up again! Patrick Haye, Miller Crosby, Dan Allaire and Rachelle Elie gave a high energy show that really dug into some crazy content and hopefully lifted some low spirits out of the COVID doldrums. Until the next one... Jack White was the SNL performer this week. What a player and what a performance! It was like an old Cream show or something! They essentially played an arranged blues tune with lots of dynamic including a breakdown, some shots, a massive drummer with a super strange but flamboyant style of angling all the drums away from his body, two screeching guitar solo and one hell of an unleashed vibe! Dug it! Love how folk are still using the blues to sing the blues... Christmas ads galore already. Whoa. Black Friday? The WAC Christmas Market downtown was cancelled today unfortunately. Some stores will still be open later with lots of specials to be found around town. Shop local this year! My buddy and Miss Emily band mate, Van Sheen turned 40 on Sunday! Lucky guy with his new baby to celebrate with! Also, a very lucky guy in that some folk pooled funds to help him go get his dream Gretsch guitar! What better time than now! Congratulations buddy and I look forward to playing with you again here at The Cove when Miss Emily and her band play two shows, Fri.Dec.18 and Sat.Dec.19 with the soul sounds of Frank Ryan opening. My oldest friend Chris Atack sent me the new War on Drugs "Live Drugs" recording on the weekend. Worth a listen! As he said, like Bob Dylan meets Dire Straits. This week at The Cove: First of all, news winter hours...Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 11:30am-9pm, Thursday and Sunday 11:30am-8pm, Monday and Tuesday closed. Stay three nights, pay for two. Wednesday Wings 'n Tunes + Open Mic with Shawn McCullough and Friends 5:30-9pm Thursday is Manhunt Jazz Night with Spencer Evans Trio feat. Oscar Evans 5-8pm Friday is the inexplicable talent of Benni Vander! Benni plays Elton John all night, and more! Benni is one of the keys to amazingness of the Miss Emily band as well. Catch him 6-9pm. (says 5-8pm on the poster but that's changed now) Saturday is all but a full house but it's East Coaster Night with Chris Murphy and Jon McLurg of Turpin's Trail from 5:30-9pm. Some East Coast food specials and more. Sunday is the return of old time country storyteller/crooner Steve Stacey and country guitar pickin' Thoroughbred Pat Robillard from 5-8pm. Next week at The Cove: Thu.Dec.3 NO PRINCIPALS feat. DAVE BALFOUR, JAMIE CAMPBELL + JOE SKUCE (Acoustic Folk Trio, Westport/Perth) 5-8pm Fri.Dec.4 YOUNG PETTY STONES: Music of Neil Young, Tom Petty + The Rolling Stones (Westport/Yarker/Delta/Hudson) 6-10pm $60 + HST + Gratuity ***Sold Out*** Sat.Dec.5 THE PLAID BASTARDS feat. JEFF CALLERY + SHAWN McCULLOUGH (Acoustic Country/Rock Duo, Brockville/Westport) 6-9pm Sun.Dec.6 SUBPRIME (Classic Rock 'n Roll Band) with Prime Rib Special $35 +HST. Music is 7-10pm Reservations are always preferred in this COVID climate. Serving you safely and responsibly with all COVID protocol in place. Call The Cove for any questions, concerns, ideas, compliments... Watch of the Week goes hands down to Lazer Lloyd. Check. Him. Out. On Facebook. Thanks Jeff Chant. This was written by Kayla Alysse. I must mention that this is not a shot to the grocery store industry but to the inconsistencies that lie within the restrictions of our businesses during COVID. It's truly concerning what is happening to our hospitality and entertainment industry. As I walk into the grocery store with 30 other people at the same time, I think about my restaurant which allows parties of 6 total, and meticulously spaces out reservations by 10 minutes ensuring g...Continue reading

NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 268 Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Despite the times, we are very blessed. We are still operating so that's a lot to be thankful for. Ho...pefully it continues! It's also my son Freddie’s 4th Bday!!! I, like many parents, can't believe it! (the idea that time is passing and our kids are growing up so quickly) It's been a wild ride Fred. You make us so happy and we are so proud of you! You're such a bright light in our lives and your big brother Sam loves you so much too. Mom and I still think you are going to be an actor someday with your slow-mo moves! Happy birthday Mr. Puffington Puff! Megan Bomberry Cowan Happy 18th to my neice and nephew Breanna and Braydon! Incredible that you are already on your way to being young adults. Sending love and success to you both! Breanna Kelly Jen Kelly AND, happy birthday to my amazing sister-in-law and someone we perennially miss, Kelly Cowan! When we will see you in person again, no one really knows but we can only hope and keep in touch. Your beautiful family continues to grow with your newest ROPOCO! HAHA! I'll keep wearing my bib daily. Easier that way. Love you Kels! Kelly Cowan Watch an incredible biopic on the internationally critically acclaimed musician/activist M.I.A.! What a trip. Great music. Seriously challenging subject matter and so brave. To see a young daughter of the rebel Tamils of Sri Lanka go on to become such an icon is inspiring. The movie is called Matangi/Mya/M.I.A. Another great story about musicians going above and beyond. Indie folk rock greats, Fleet Foxes released their new record and celebrated Voter Registration Day in the USA in conjunction to spread awareness with how important it is to vote this year down there! Solid new record. Still need to give it another chance. Amazing that they are still at it considering how much of a hiatus they took. The first two records are still my favourite. My friend Chris Hum told me about the latest musical act of charity coming out of Brockville. It's called Aaron’s M.I.L. (Musical Instrument Library). Very cool that he and others have gone to these lengths to amass as many musical instruments as possible to allow for those who want to learn but don't have the instrument! Thanks for your efforts and kindness Chris et al! Chris Hum The absolute legend of the metal guitar, Eddie Van Halen passed away last week at 65. He was struggling from cancer. Eddie will forever be remembered for his undeniable face melting guitar heroics that literally gave birth to a whole new age of guitar playing arguably a new genre within the world of rock and roll. Listen to the 33 minute 9 song set of the Van Halen record called 1984 and you will not need to wonder about my previous statement any longer. Just jaw dropping. Amidst all the dated-ness and 80s cheese, there will forever emerge a phoenix of taste, speed and soul from his work, especially on 1984, my personal favourite and first ever LP thanks to my cousin Tim! I just can't get enough of that record...Listen to Top Jimmy, Panama, Hot for Teacher and Drop Dead Legs. Hard to believe that one of their best records was also their 6th one! As Jay Smith said so well, "Riff in Peace". Sending some belated birthday love out to Mel Spence! So fun to be able to host your Bday before the cool weather came! 40th looks great on you! Looking forward to many more floss parties in the future! Melanie Spence Happy 50th Anniversary to some of the true salt of the earth, Dick and Marg Christy! My my we have had so many great nights with you and your family and friends over the years. It would have been amazing to be able to provide The Cove as your venue but it just wasn't to be right. Rain check! I'm sure you guys had an incredible day together! You are always celebrating, the way it should be! Richard Christy Terribly sorry we had to cancel Shannon and Thomas’ wedding this upcoming weekend. One of the hardest moves we have had to do. We hope to host you another date in the near future! Shout out to my uncle Phil who is on Facebook now too btw. Buddy! Phil Cowan Matt Cowan Head over Heels had their last gig of the season this past Sunday. Always love having them provide that afternoon of comfort music while The Cove provides the comfort food! See you again soon and hopefully next summer every Sunday again! Kevin Fred Head New COVID restrictions are applied to Red Zones like Ottawa, Toronto and Peel but so far, they don't apply to rural areas where there are low to no cases. The Cove and Westport is continuing to operate as normal with the full COVID protocols in place. The Cove has 3 air filtration units with HEPA filters which circulate the air multiple times hourly and remove most of the allergens and germs as well. We hope you feel comfortable to still come to our restaurant and enjoy music with us. We have music almost nightly, closed Mondays at 3pm. See you soon! James Doran Congrats to my friend Chet Doxas who is recording in upstate New York with the jazz great Carla Bley. Nuff said! Chet Doxas Happy anniversary Jeff and Paula Callery! They are high school sweethearts! Great story! Jeff played his heart out Saturday. Always a top notch performance musically and entertaining...Jeff Callery Upcoming shows at The Cove... Tuesdays with Eric Uren start tonight! As you may know him, Eric Uren is a new friend of ours and a good friend of Shawn McCullough's as well. He can really sing and play a tune and is writing more and more. His intent is to have a surprise special guest with him weekly. Catch the magic weekly 5-8pm! Eric Uren Wednesdays are Wings 'n Tunes again! Food special changes but it's the same great party with our friend Shawn McCullough who will be singing with special guest Kevin Head on guitar! Come on out and sing socially distanced as well! You could win a $25 gift certificate! 5-8pm Maureen Price Shawn Mccullough Kevin Fred Head This Thursday is our Jailbreak Jazz Night with Spencer Evans TRIO featuring Seamus Cowan on bass and Andy Love on drums...Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces! It's been months since the last gig with these three! 5-8pm...break out of Jail! Hear some Tower of Power, Johnny Nash and Van Halen as well as some hits and your requests! Spencer Evans Love Andy This Friday is the return of Chris Murphy of Turpin's Trail! The man of East Coast song is back to warm your soul. 5-8pm Christopher Joseph Murphy My dad Terry "Snake" Cowan having his birthday on Saturday. He is becoming a quiet cat. It is difficult at this time that COVID restricts us from gathering in large groups. At the Cove on stayrday, Music will be by Eric Uren from 5-8pm. Love you dad! Terry Cowan Mary Cowan Sunday is Mike Tremble, the boyfriend of one of our friendly servers named Dawn! He will be playing some classic rock and roll for you which is super exciting as he has been wanting to play for a long time. Should be a real special night! 5-8pm. Dawn Drabczyk Mike Tremble Next week is: Thursday with Greg Ball and Joe Carscallen, members of Campfire Liars Club 5-8pm Friday and Saturday is Blues on the Rideau with Samantha Martin Trio 7-10pm. UPDATE on upcoming BOTR shows at The Cove Inn, Westport Ontario: Most of you have heard that due to recent rise (Second Wave) of COVID cases in certain regions ...of the province the Ontario government has just implemented lockdown orders for schools, businesses and private gatherings (including restaurants and bars) in the Toronto, Peel and Ottawa regions (the areas with the highest incidence of cases) for the next 28 days - which means no LIVE music events within those regions for that time period. This is NOT the case with The Cove Inn in Westport however. Leeds Grenville Lanark - the region that Westport is a part of - continues to be one of the lower risk areas for COVID-19 in the province with only 401 cases reported so far since January 2020. This is due in part to the low density smaller population here along with the careful Safety Protocol that has been maintained by most of the citizens and businesses in the area. The Cove Inn has worked carefully with the LGHU right from the start and continues to do so. It is our fervent hope that everyone will continue to be vigilant through these difficult times so no spike increase happens here. With this in mind The Cove CONTINUES TO REMAIN OPEN and hosting regular events - including LIVE music. That includes the two remaining upcoming BLUES ON THE RIDEAU Fall 2020 Shows. Oct 23 & 24 - SAMANTHA MARTIN TRIO Nov 13 & 14 - HOROJO TRIO These shows will run as planned - unless/if the government extends the lockdown to this area in which case they will be cancelled and rescheduled. Please watch for Facebook posts and eBlasts and check with The Cove closer to the date of the shows to confirm. The Cove will also call everyone who has reserved in advance of the shows to confirm that they are still coming. DINNER & SHOW (with door prizes and donation to local charity included) only $70 plus HST. 7-10 pm for all shows. Note that the revised BOTR format is "Sit & Listen" Blues, Soul & R&B and there is NO DANCING. With that in mind please respect the artists and the other patrons and avoid loud talking and noise during the shows. Advance reservations are required for these shows and because of the limited capacity due to COVID (half regular - only 50 to 60 per show) we highly recommended that you reserve well ahead. Both of Samantha's shows are almost Sold Out already and Horojo is filling up fast as well. CALL THE COVE at 613-273-3636 or email [email protected] to reserve. Re: LIVE broadcasts of these shows on the BOTR YouTube channel. Unfortunately due to contractual obligations we will NOT be able to broadcast SAMANTHA MARTIN'S shows Oct 23 & 24 - but HOROJO's shows Nov 13 & 14 WILL BROADCAST AS PLANNED - in high quality HD video and Sound Board audio. Broadcast times 8 to 9:30 pm ET both nights. No charge to view but DONATIONS will be gratefully appreciated. A REMINDER to everyone to PLEASE respect COVID safety protocol at all times when attending these shows. The Cove certainly is. Do NOT come if you don't feel well or are experiencing any flu- like symptoms OR if you have been in contact with someone who has tested COVID positive recently OR if you've been out of the country or even the province and have not self-quarantined for at last 14 days since your return. * MASKS are required for everyone entering The Cove and when moving around the room (although they can be removed once seated). All Cove staff will or course be wearing masks. * 2 meter/6' distancing is in place between all tables and between the artists and audience. We ask that everyone try and respect this distancing at all times - i.e. when entering, waiting to pay the bill, etc * Hand sanitizer is in place throughout The Cove and everyone is reminded to use it upon entering, when leaving and at least once during the night. * One person at a time in the washrooms * To add an extra layer of safety try to join with friends and family that you know to be COVID-free to create a Bubble table. * Tracing information for everyone will be collected via the Comment Cards To help further reduce the risk of COVID The Cove has invested in 3 Honeywell HEPA filter Air Purifiers that change and clean the indoor air in the Dining Room/Bar (removing 99% of airborne particles) 5X every hour. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We believe that with everyone working together and following these basic safety rules we can all continue to enjoy a a great night of LIVE music in relative safety. Music - especially Blues and especially of this high caliber - is so enjoyable and HEALING and Lord knows we can all use some of that these days! Thank you and see you there. NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 267 Well hello. It’s really important to grow. Isn’t it? It’s great to learn and be happy about what you’re learning about. I asked th...e Internet what everyone’s favourite new album was! My FB to be precise. It’s what I wanted to do. Felt like it was about that time to check in. Guess what? All kinds of people responded a myriad of ways, rabbit holes, surprises, ear openers, eye openers...So fun to connect this way. Some local groups mentioned. The Wilderness’ new record is a great singular sound. Dark and edgy but great tones and vocals by Jonas. Louis Shaker was interesting too. Instrumentally, I just love that a funky and tweaked out guitar. The Neighbourhood is totally new to me but with their new record, they take you off the deep end in a 70s Ziggy Stardust silver spiral...the videos are a seamless story! We really have the opportunity to silently live our own artistic worlds more now than ever with the wealth of art out there. Thanks for the contributions everyone! I enjoyed that very much and will continue to sift through all of the artists mentioned. Felt like I grew this week. Congratulations to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Unfortunate that Steve Stamkos didn’t play in the final but was a character win for that group. Toronto Blue Jays! Happy for the young guns. They made it to the post season. Flashed and burner while there but you gotta be on your game, every single day. Rays could win it all I think. Congratulations to my buddy Miss Emily who just released a record! A pandemic record! These things do happen! It’s called Miss Emily Live at the Isabel and it’s composed of tunes recorded live over the past 6 sold out shows there over the last 2 plus years. Really looking forward to hearing this thing in its finality. I play bass and sing on a few tunes. Honoured to share the bass role with my unreal inspiration Zak Colbert and the iconic Gord Sinclair of The Hip. Loving this band more and more! Thanks to Tavis for letting me know about the psychedelic folk of Mapache from California. Breezy... RIP Francis Rocco Prestia, one of my early favourite bass monsters. A true leading bass player. A guy who just literally figured it out, out of necessity and passion. He stuck with it and played in basically one and only one band, Tower of Power. A funk powerhouse, Rocco rattled off staccato 16th note lines like an engine. Tunes like Knock Yourself Out, What is Hip?, You got to Funkifize, Don’t Change Horses, Squib Cakes, Ebony Jam, Drop it in the Slot and...Oakland Stroke. Put drummer David Garibaldi in a pocket with this dude and a boxing match of horns in front, you have something special. The best. My brother and I fronted a McGill school band called Groove Prophecy channeling this kind of stuff and it was an all out blast. Love those days. RIP Mr. Prestia. I’ll play What is Hip until they day I can’t anymore. Thinking about the Radford family at this time. Sending love, good thoughts and strength. Upcoming at The Cove: Tuesdays with Eric is approaching! Eric Uren will take the stage each Tuesday from 5-8pm to play his music. He will deconstruct tunes and have special guest invites that will really create a story week to week. Come and join in. Wednesday is the last Rack ‘n Tunes of the year. Switching gears over to Wings ‘n Tunes again! Shawn McCullough continues to host with special guests on the guitar. My man Jeff Callery is on this week with Shawn. 5-8pm weekly. Claudio Valentini is postponing any further shows until safer times. We enjoyed your matinee patio instrumentals on your nylon string guitar! Head over Heels final weekend this Sunday. We love these folk. Another year in the books! We did it! Thanks for providing a home for so many folk on Sundays! Catch them 12:30-3:30 this Thanksgiving Sunday over a Hot Turkey Sandwich! Why not... Oktoberfest Nites at The Cove happen this week! Servus! Oktoberfest Menu, Live Music and Local Beers nightly! Thursday is No Principals with Dave Balfour and Jamie Campbell feat. Joe Skuce. Super duper acoustic folk for your ears, 5-8pm. Friday is a full on Funky pop/rock Duo calls Borgin & Benni feat. Benni Vander, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist and inspired vocalist Alison Burkie, 5-8pm. Grab some authentic German grub and choose from a delicious selection of local seasonal beers! Finally, Jeff Callery plays his anniversary on Saturday night. Luckily his wife will be in the audience! Such a great performer an songwriter. Looking forward to it! 5-8pm Thanks for reading and not falling asleep...please continue to be as generous as possible to all musicians everywhere! Seamus

On my way to another great Blues On The Rideau weekend at The Cove Inn, Westport with the SAMANTHA MARTIN TRIO and I can't wait. I love this woman's voice, ener...gy and stage presence. Dynamic Soul, Blues & R&B - a 4X Maple Blues Award nominee and Juno nominee. We've had her at the Series twice before with her full band DELTA SUGAR and they were great evenings but I'm looking forward just as much to the more intimate "Sit & Listen" format with her and the TRIO. Both shows - Friday and Saturday night - are SOLD OUT (as were her previous visit to The Cove). On that note - the last shows of the Fall BOTR Series - November 13 & 14 with the HOROJO TRIO (Jamie Holmes, Jeff Rogers, JW Jones) are almost Sold Out as well. These guys won this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis beating out over 250 bands. Great Rockin' Soul and R&B. Still a few tickets left but if you want to be there you need to CALL THE COVE ASAP 613-273-3636 and reserve. Limited capacity due to COVID. Dinner & Show only $70 All BOTR shows support local charities. Proceeds from Samantha's shows go to support the RUBY GLAND FOUNDATION to help the parents of their sweet but severely handicapped young daughter. Proceeds from Horojo's show go to the WESTPORT FOOD BANK. A reminder that strict COVID Safety measures are in effect at all Cove shows. Please don't come if you aren't feeling well or have been exposed to anyone who has tested positive within the past 14 days. Masks are required to enter and when moving around the room. 6' distancing between tables, plated meals brought to the table, no dancing, frequent use of hand sanitizer, etc. Unfortunately we are not able to broadcast Samantha's shows on our BOTR YouTube channel this weekend due to contract restrictions - but HOROJO's shows will be aired. Make note - 8 to 9:30 pm ET Nov 13 & 14 - LIVE. Next best thing to being there. No charge to view but DONATIONS are gratefully appreciated. Just Google YouTube - Blues On The Rideau to find the Channel - and please Subscribe! www.BluesOnTheRideau.ca www.coveinn.com www.samanthamartinmusic.com www.horojotrio.com

NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 269 I’m so glad I got close to some of Eddie Van Halen’s music and I’m so lucky to know some people who have crammed it too! Was an ab...solute blast to pay tribute to the master on a Boogie Woogie piano medley mash-up version of Hot for Teacher among other tributes this past Thursday at Jailbreak Jazz Night! It had been 10 months since we had played! Cray. Cray. Spencer Evans, Andy Love and myself will play next month on Thu.Nov.26! Spencer Evans Love Andy Chris Murphy gave everyone another east coast music lesson on Friday whilst a small local wedding convened! Congratulations to Angela and Curtis Hodgson! After a few changes to plans, like everything that has happened with everyone in the world over the last few months...it happened, and full circle! The Man of Honour Jeremy Barr wrote a tune for Angela and Curtis. It was really sweet! Lucky to meet Bren and Kurtis' Kasher too! Angela Hodgson Curtis Hodgson Jeremy Barr Erin Adrain Emily Brown Brenley-Ann Gillanders Kurtis Huneault Lorraine Merkley Barr JoAnna Paterson Check out my friend Miss Emily and the super incredible performance we did in September at the Empire Theatre in Belleville! It’s called Music City Mondays and it’s available on her site, Vimeo or FB. Very characteristic show of the new band these days! Lots of fun. Word is, Emily might be coming to The Cove in December. Her new record called Miss Emily Live at the Isabel comes out October 30! Emily Fennell Taylor Ben Vandergaast Rob Radford Jon Stewart Van Sheen Mark Rashotte Margie Bailey Phieffer Montreal’s can’t keep a Brother Down Sam Roberts just released a new record. Excited for him and the guys as they finished it before the pandemic hit the world. It’s a spacey sounding record for sure. Still Sam though! My buddy Chris told me about Bahamas out out another record. Chris Atack My sister Jen told me about the new Arkells record. Mostly acoustic versions of their previously released rock band tunes. There is a tune on it called Quitting You she bought reminiscent of a Spoon River tune. I’ll let the jury call that one but I though it had merit. Jen Kelly Happy birthday to my dad Terry who turned 77 on Saturday. Nice to see a couple close friends come out. Was a perfect fall Saturday this weekend past. Eric Uren gave an incredibly honest and engaging rootsy musical performance that night. He has such a way with filtering a tune through himself spitting out a very cool version all his own. Love to hear more of his own tunes! You can hear him every Tuesday at The Cove...Tuesdays with Eric! 5-8pm Terry Cowan Eric Uren Happy to hear that we we were able to get Mike Tremble in to give a heartfelt Sunday roots rock and roll show. He will be back with his friend to play a duo show this Sunday at The Cove called The Michael Moore Project. 5-8pm Dawn Drabczyk Mike Tremble Very excited about the prospect of reconvening with my old friend JP Houston in whose band I played in Montreal. His music was always the most intriguing melange of Queen meets The Band meets Randy Newman. Stay tuned. JP Houston Dan Curtis Steve Dagg Wednesday is the day of the week we call hump day. Get over it. Shawn McCullough returns to the stage to join his weekly special guest on guitar while his wrists heal! This week it’s Jeff Callery heading up Wings ‘n Tunes with his ol bud Shawn! 5-8pm Jeff Callery Shawn Mccullough Thursday won’t be fun at all. No. No sarcasm, jokes, banter, chipping away at each other. No far reaching soul songs by a songwriting performing talent beyond his Resume. Nope. None of that. Well, Kingston’s Greg Ball aka Quinn’s right hand man from ABC and the brother everyone loves to hear in Kingston will be playing with the quiet and reserved Joe Carscallen on Thursday at The Cove! The two are a local success story in the Greg Ball Band with their brand of sensitive and piercing rock and roll. His lyrics are bare and so simply true to his experience. Greg’s thing caught the attention of Paul Langlois of The Tragically Hip signing to his label and then Greg and Joe decided to join The Campfire Liars Club with Paul and Jim Tidman. Oh, we’ve had some good ones here with those boys. If you love Wilco and Tom Petty...No kidding. Come out! 5-8pm Greg Ball Blues on the Rideau returns with an acoustic Samantha Martin Trio. One of Canada’s proven soul singing powerhouses. Friday and Saturday. Very limited capacity. 7-10pm reservations only. Samantha Martin James Doran Finally, I’m somewhat sad but in a state of anticipation until the next season of Ted Lasso. It’s like Maya Angelou for Dummies. Highly recommended! Look past the facade! Nice talking to ya.

So tonight ,Marco and I ...(East Coast Experience) had a show booked at The Cove, In Beautiful Westport On. We were so very excited to be back for our 4th time ...and this show has been sold out for well over a month.. sadly.. l was admitted into hospital last Sunday and will probably remain in hospital for at least another week.. so we had to postpone the show..i've been playing in venues across canada and beyond for 30 years and i cant remember ever pulling a show.. played many sick, torn legiments, etc that prolly should have been cancelled... but i always tried to go out and do my part if the people were willing to shell out of their pocket to come listen.. its a passion i cant explain. Well .. Tonights show is lets say rescheduled.. so we dont have to use that ugly cancel word. Im sure i will be on the mend real soon and we have so much new and exciting music, albums, videos, to share with you all soon... We love you all for your support .. this is just a bump in the road. keep following along on our social media..peace. #Sociable! #ECE www.ecex.ca BQ

NOTES FROM THE ‘PORT Vol. 264 Lots of great things continue to happen around Westport and area these days! Summer is holding on with certain days but hey...we a...re past Labour Day. It's time to start thinking about the wonderful cool down, the slow down...I'd love to take this time to mention all of the musicians who played in the area and who played at The Cove this summer! We appreciate you believing in us! As the summer started and progressed, people came back out in droves to our little town. People also, literally marveled at the return of the live music experience here! Every one of you performed at such a high standard and with such professionalism and provided the best in entertainment! We are all so thankful! To all of you...I won't name all of you but I probably should and actually would but I won't! Please continue to come back and want to play indoors this fall and winter! We will continue to do our level best as life returns to mainly indoors. Pat Gifford is back at it again...She needs help to promote the program she helps with called "Walk a Day in My Boots". This year she is asking for gently used backpacks for the homeless. We can only imagine how these will help them. She is still collecting winter jackets and boots however. The list of possibilities is endless! People can reach Pat for other ideas as well. Towels for instance are a big need. Feel free to Pat at 613.273.6610 or [email protected] and thank you for your support! Happy birthday Babe to Rich Gland who just celebrated his big 49 + 1! Awesome guy, just love him. Great little waterside party too! Little Nicaragua to help out! You deserve so much my friend! The Cove had our first successful COVID wedding! Great to be able to provide the venue for those looking to tie the knot again! We look forward to many more! Congrats Mary Ann and Rick! Terry Gillespie Trio with his rhythm section Peter and Salah were nice and chill and groovy on Thursday. So great to have a full house for him! Thanks for supporting one of Canada's unsung Blues heroes! Jason Kent played an unreal set of the extended alphabet that stretched to new languages and concepts for the modern mind. He efforts are legendary in that his set lasted three and a half hours without a single break. Thanks to the unsipped glass of Veuve Cliquot...See you soon again Jason. I'm sure you will challenge and satisfy in the same sense again soon... Eric Uren has been playing lots of great shows lately! Such a big help and a creative mind too! Music is on almost every night of the week. Almost. Keep in tune with www.coveinn.com and the Entertainment Schedule. Wednesday Rack ‘n Tunes continue to be uplifting with great music, a return to the open mic with some sweet surprise guests weekly including members of the Abrams Brothers last week! Weekly host and guitarist Shawn McCullough continues to sing with guesting guitar players despite his carpal tunnel surgery. This week, Mr. Henry Norwood is back in the saddle to hit you with some of the best in classic country! 5-8pm Spencer Evans returns to possible indoor set this Thursday 5-8pm! Summer just isn't right without Jazz Night! Looking forward to some more hairy nights in the near future with this cat! Come with requests! This man can do it all, literally! Piano, clarinet, squeezebox, comedy, stories, anecdotes, political satire, music history and of course, he can belt out a song...thousands of them. Mr. Jazz Night, Goat Boy, Spencer "The Tormentor"...come see for yourself. Blues on the Rideau returns with Rick Fines & Suzie Vinnick this Friday! What a pair, what a duo. This is some of the cream of the crop in Canadian folk/blues art people. No wonder it's a sold out double header. We wish we had more room. Planning the lunch show on the patio from 1-4pm (doors 12pm) and the dinner show will be indoors from 7-10pm (doors 6pm). Know that The Cove follows all COVID protocol including socially distanced tables, performer, servers wear masks at all times indoors, everyone is required to wear masks when moving about indoors, all guests must be seated at our events, contact tracing logs in effect and Air Filtration Units are now used with HEPA filters. Blues on the Rideau is back and we intend to keep it that way for a long time! Samantha Martin Trio is next Oct.23/24! Saturday is a small wedding of some old friends but we also have the sweet sounds of Nolan Hubbard on the mic 6-10pm. Come and enjoy as the wedding party has allowed the public to enjoy the rest of the room! A welcome wedding crash if you will... Sunday is going to be a gorgeous day for anything and everything! Come and be merry with us! Please call us for reservations! Monday is the return of Riley & Riley from Kingston. Amazing father and son old school blues duo with harp and guitar. Very authentic! 5-8pm Tuesday is Matt Dickson again! He is a wonderful soul and fantastic classic rock musicologist! 5-8pm Thanks again for reading and thanks for spreading the word about our corner of the world! Seamus Cowan @whatsonwestport
