What is your soul purpose? "...dozens of studies have shown that #seniors with a sense of #purpose in life are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease..disabilities, heart attacks or strokes, and more likely to #live longer than people without this kind of underlying motivation" Purpose can be found in very simple things such as taking care of a pet, being kind to your neighbours, or working in the garden. If you're unsure, it may be helpful to ask yourself, 'What gives m...eaning to my life?' #ageing #meaningful #olderadults #mentalhealth

Communities should build housing with the concept of purpose in mind. Just as purpose points us towards the future, purpose-driven housing for our seniors can support them in maintaining daily purpose. Innovation in senior housing provides opportunities to share skills, knowledge, and unique interests through spaces that encourage interaction, enjoyment of nature, learning and creativity.

Why is "purpose-driven" senior housing so important? Because having a sense purpose every day becomes increasingly important as we age. Purpose adds meaning to our lives, increases our happiness, and is vital for maintaining mental health. The Village Langley in B.C. is a model of how "purpose-driven" housing can be achieved for residents with dementia or Alzheimers. https://www.thevillagelangley.com/

The older population is increasing rapidly across the globe. Although many seniors wish to stay in their homes for as long as possible, challenges related to affordability, accessibility, and poor health services may make doing so difficult. Seniors who still live in their homes in rural locations are often living alone. This increases the risk of social isolation. Evidence suggests that innovative housing models hold promise to improve health outcomes, allowing mor...e people to age-in-place. Finding a daily sense of purpose may help seniors stay healthier longer. Those with a higher level of purpose have higher levels of personal growth. We might find our purpose where we live, in our homes or in our community. Opportunities to continue to take part in work and extracurricular activities are a critical design feature of senior housing for the future. Developing new models of housing that is not only accessible, well located within the community, and perhaps linked with support services (either within the housing itself or within easy access) is vital for the health of our aging demographic.... Expanding the supply of housing options may give seniors more opportunities to find ongoing purpose and a sense of belonging within their communities. This will greatly improve their overall quality of life. The following ideas could be integrated into senior housing: Spaces for students/residents to learn from each other and to share information about purpose, knowledge, and skills Spaces for residents to gain new knowledge and skills that they can share with others Spaces to provide a Social Enterprise for learning, working, volunteering and giving back to the community Spaces to provide support to those who live in the building, and for visitors from the local area

As we age our circumstances may change and we may start to ask ourselves, what is my purpose now? Many factors can affect a persons’ sense of purpose, such as job loss, children leaving home, divorce, death of a spouse, health challenges, retirement etc. To discover, or re-discover your purpose, ask yourself, what makes you happy? What skills do you excel at? What activities do you find yourself getting lost in for hours? ... These questions will help you reconnect to yourself and clarify ways in which you could share your skills and give back to your community. Has your sense of purpose changed as you’ve grown?

An inspiring story about a young couple following their #passion! With a love for all things culinary, they took off for a year to travel around the world with the #goal of refining their #values and gaining new perspectives. After a year abroad, they came to Cobourg to visit family and fell in love with the town. After input from community members, renovation of an old store front, and learning how to order produce, their dream came to life in the form of The Market & Smør...; a fresh food, zero waste, grocery market - a space that welcomes all members of the community. My ‘why’ for all of this, says Montana, gesturing around her, is to keep the produce at an affordable price so that children living in lower socioeconomic families can have access to good food. I can’t stand the thought of a child going hungry. #millennials #findyourpurpose #careertips #zerowaste #foodmarket #culinaryarts #nutrition #sustainability #cooking #ontario

The concept of purpose is often linked to being of service supporting others. Having community programs in place that encourage being of service may be important in future neighbourhood housing. Service can be through the sharing of skills and knowledge, volunteering, and working. Engaging with others, and how you use your talents has a direct impact on social and personal well-being in all age groups. That being said, many seniors are experiencing social isolation. ... Social isolation has been linked to poor health outcomes, physically, emotionally, and cognitively. Finding, maintaining, and experiencing daily purpose can build resiliency in health and introduce social experiences and friendship. Have you done one thing today that supports others? How did this make you feel?
