To service or not to service? That is the question. While you may not have used your regs in the last year, you may want to still get them serviced to maintain your warranty. Some warranties cover parts for life of the regulator......as long as it is serviced every 12 months-give or take a month. If this is how your warranty works, you do not want to lose this as parts are what can make servicing very expensive! Also, with the vaccine rolling out, be prepared to travel ...with freshly serviced regs that you will get back in a timely manor! We offer curb-side drop off/pickup. Call the shop to preregister your regs if you want the curb-side drop off. Then label your regs with your name and phone number and any issues you may have with them and then call the shop on arrival and we will meet you in the parking lot for pick up/drop off. Call us at 403-243-4616. Let's be prepared to get back in the water! See more

There was a lot of hand sanitizer, disinfectant, face masks, sooo many face shields, but despite the COVID modifications - it was the challenging, dramatically hilarious Rescue Course we know and love! Congratulations Alexa, Mike, Angelique and Jennie on becoming PADI Rescue Divers! A big thanks to our instructor Sabrina for chasing everyone around with safety supplies while teaching (TIME OUT! FACE SHIELD! HAND SANITIZER! GO GO GO!), our victims Karla, Lisa, Brayden, Rob and... Lisa for keeping the drama high, and our shore support folks for dog sitting, taping gloves, and disinfecting alll the things. You may notice its a little quieter at the shop next time youre in, most notably the absence of a wonderful pup barking "PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" from the back office. Our darling Teddy bounded across the rainbow bridge on Friday to be with his furry brother Hudson, his less-furry dad Rob, and all his other pupper friends who were waiting for him. Teddy was a total goofball. If you ever had him in your classes, you might remember him head-butting your elbows for scratches, sta...ring at you longingly while you were eating something delicious, or guilting you into sitting on the floor with him to maximize his snuggle time. Lets face it, it was impossible to say no. He was convinced he was a lap dog. Were going to miss you terribly - your dog hair on our clothes after a great snuggle, your pushy head-scratch tactics, your look of indignation when we didnt share our pizza bones (pizza crusts - how dare we!). But above all, were going to miss all the unconditional love you shared with us. We know youre having fun eating all the delicious snacks you really shouldnt be eating (do you really want a tummy ache? Do you?), and keeping a mischievous eye on Seppie and your humans. Thanks for all the years of love little Turkey, you were a hecking good boi, and well miss you so much.

Meet Scuba Jai! I am a local Calgarian who loves to travel, seek new adventures and is enthusiastic about the underwater world Q: When did you get certified and why?... A: I love the water and was inspired to become a Scuba Diver while travelling in the South Pacific before College. I missed the tropical opportunity and received my Open Water on a cold October weekend at Lake Minnewanka. I thought this was only a summer sport, but I had yet to discover ICE diving. My Open Water Diver certification opened the underwater world of the heroes I admired; James Bond, Jules Verne and, the most famous explorer of modern times, Jacques Cousteau. Q: When did you become a PRO (Divemaster/Instructor) and why? A: I convinced a few fellow ICE diving buddies to attend a PADI Pro night. Thinking we would just leave if it was uneventful, the presentation captivated us and we all signed up for this unparalleled adventure of a lifetime!! For almost a decade Ive enjoyed changing peoples lives for the better by giving them an experience most humans will never have the opportunity to enjoy. Q: Whats your favourite thing to teach? A: There are a lot of Courses and Specialties I love teaching. Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, and Deep are some of my favourites, but my passion has always been ICE" Diving. Seeing the courage, confidence and passion of my students is always rewarding and Ive made some great friends from the sport. Its one of the many reasons I love being an Instructor. Q: Favourite dive experience so far? I dove the historic Titan I Missile Silo and made 14 new friends at Shark Junction in Bahamas, but the one dive that will stay with me forever is the heart warming swim with a Humpback Whale in the Cook Islands. Q: Favourite food/drink? A: Indonesian Rice Table. My wife is Dutch an awesome cook. I love to relax with great friends and a Rusty Nail. (Beer is good too!!) Q: Favourite activity OTHER than diving? A: Travel. I love history and exploring the World. Camping and Hiking has taken me from the wetlands and grasses of Southern Alberta to seeing bears and whales in the glaciers and fjords of Alaska. Q: One little know fact about you that you are willing to share?? A: I used to fly airplanes

POOL UPDATE: OUR POOL IS OPEN! We are super stoked to confirm that our pool is open! Its been a journey to get to this point, and we did wait a bit to open even after we were allowed to, to make sure we had our processes in place. You will notice a few things will be different than what youre used to: -Pool and Open Water courses are running! We are just putting the final schedules together. Youll notice that course offerings are limited at the moment - thats because wer...e working on rescheduling everyone who was impacted by the shutdown, but we will continue to add courses as we go! If theres a course you would like to take, just let us know and well squeeze it in there for you! -All students will have their temperature taken prior to heading to the back classroom area. Note that this area is now off-limits to anyone except staff and students actively in a course on that given day. -All students will be required to wear a mask while on the pool deck. This can be a re-usable cloth mask, or a disposable surgical mask. -Your instructors will be wearing face shields, so they can still effectively communicate course material, but still keep you safe. -All our class sizes have been reduced (outdoors as well), so you may notice classes will fill up very quickly. -Courses may take a little longer than youre used to, as our team is disinfecting behind you as you go. Thanks so much for your patience with this! -Rental gear has always been disinfected between uses, but we are implementing much more stringent cleaning measures, including a waiting period for gear before it goes back out. As a result, you will find that rentals may not be as readily available as youre used to. Book early if youre taking a course or planning an outing. -While we will be taking bookings for the pool (splashes, private events, etc) - spots will be limited, and you will have to pre-book. No walk-ins, sorry. The entire pool deck is being disinfected between bookings, and this does take time. -Our instructors will no longer do surprise afternoon snack runs for classroom sessions (sorry guys, youll just have to bring your own snacks and caffeine. We feel your pain!). When you are contacted to reschedule your course or are signing up for a new one, youll be given additional info specific to your course. We wanted to also take this moment to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who supported us through this shutdown - all of you who bought cloth masks (SO many masks!!), gear, booked courses, sent us messages, send virtual hugs - we appreciate each and every one of you, and we cant wait to get you back in the water - safely, as always. As we do get asked a lot - you can still get cloth masks form our online store, and they will be available in store as well: https://www.diveshopscubaonline.com/accessories

We sneakily added two new prints to our mask lineup - and one of them is not ocean-themed! Well, kind of. I mean, Vikings did do a pretty darn good job of maritime navigation... https://www.diveshopscubaonline.com/accessories As an aside, well be putting out an update in the next few days regarding our pool, and the resumption of classes - and what thatll look like! We cant wait to see you all, thanks for sticking with us through all this, and were excited to get you back in the water!

Meet Daniel (Dan)! I grew up primarily out in Okotoks, but was born in Calgary and lived there until I was about 7 or so. Q: When did you get certified and why?... A: I was certified in 2015 after trying a DSD while on vacation. Got hooked and it quickly became a passion. Q: When did you become a PRO (or still working on it) and why? A: Im still working on my first professional certification, but hopefully not my last. I decided to go that route because I enjoy helping others and helping them learn and enjoy it. Q: Whats your favorite thing to teach? A: I cant teach yet, but Ive really enjoyed assisting particularly in the pool. Q: Favorite dive experience so far? A: Probably Devils Grotto in Grand Cayman. It was my 100th dive, we swam through a neat little tunnel-like system, and I saw my first wild shark. Q: Favorite food/drink? A: Thats a tough one, and Im not sure I have an answer for it. There are many things I like, but Ill go for the simple iced tea and cheddar smokies. Q: Favorite activity OTHER than diving? A: Probably either riding my motorcycle or being a goalie in ball hockey. Q: One little known fact about you that youre willing to share? A: I did 3 years of musicals, I drive a zamboni, and I have a history as a medical anomaly! #diveshopcalgary #scuba #padi #yycscuba #yycscubadiving #yycscubadivers #calgary #calgaryalberta #stayhome #staysafe #stayhealthy #flattenthecurve #washyourhands @ Calgary, Alberta

Meet Rob! A wee little bit about me Hi, my name is Rob Welke and I am a Divemaster (DM) at the Dive Shop here in Calgary. I grew up in Kelowna and you would think that I would have been a SCUBA diver since I was old enough to swim, but sadly my tastes ran to other extreme sports, mountain climbing, mountaineering, waterskiing, downhill skiing, golf (extreme?? yes if you played with the guys I did) and skydiving. Meet Diane! I grew up in Northern BC in the small town of Dawson Creek. One activity that kept me busy and out of my Moms hair was the swimming pool. My Dad threw me in the water and said swim. My Mom, who still cannot put her face in the water to this day, thought swimming lessons would be a better, more parental way to teach me to swim. And so It began I loved the water! Q: When did you get certified and why?... A: As a child I remember watching my Dad scuba dive. He was certified by NAUI in 1971. I remember watching him descend through a small hole cut in the ice in Northern BC. I was in awe of what he could do. I became a PADI Open Water Certified Diver in 2009. Scuba diving was natural for me. The first time breathing under water not only gave me breath below the surface but also, breathed life back into me on land! I had found my passion. Q: When did you become a Pro and why? A: Becoming a Divemaster was about becoming a better, safer, more experienced diver and challenged me to get busy living. Diving has introduced a whole new world of people and experiences to me and for that I am grateful. I say this with great pride as I completed my DM just shy of my 50th Birthday in 2018, no small feat! Q: What is your favourite thing to teach? A: My favorite teaching experience is The Refresher class. Diving with people and refreshing their skills is Refreshing! Q: What has been your favorite dive experience so far? A: My favorite dive was in Roatan, Honduras and where I speared my first Lionfish (an invasive species of fish). Q: Favourite food/drink? A: My favorite food, hamburgers and fries with a gin and tonic. Good all over the world! Q: What is your favourite activity OTHER than diving? A: Other activities that I like are Volleyball and bike riding. Q: One little known fact about you that you are willing to share?? A: When I go diving I spend a few non diving days working in a little dental clinic at an orphanage, cleaning the kids and staffs teeth. Q: When did you become a Pro (Divemaster/Instructor) and why? A: After moving back to Calgary I was absolutely stoked on trying out Ice Diving. After diving with a couple of the folks at the Dive Shop I couldnt stay away! I signed up for my Divemaster course and by the end of 2017 I joined the official PADI rank of Designated Minion! Q: Favorite thing to teach? A: As a Divemaster I dont teach but I love to assist with ice diving courses and the infamous ZOMBIE Apocalypse Diver Course!!! - seriously EVERYONE should sign up for that course :D Q: Favorite Dive Experience so far? Meet Matt! I grew up here in Calgary - Moved away for a few years, and then came back (Well, to Okotoks). I recently had a very cute, and very stinky, baby boy named West. Im sitting next to the love of my life (She made me write that) as I write this, so all in all, I am a very lucky man. Diving is the biggest thing to look forward to in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter... Besides Brads Dad jokes of course. I have two massive, threatening dogs - I wont say the breed, ...but lets just say, theyre rated as the most aggressive. So if Im not kissing my girl, changing my boy, or wrangling my monsters - Im probably diving. Q:When did you get certified and why? A:Spring of 2017 - I was in Mexico, never having dove before. There was a curly haired Argentinian fellow giving free SCUBA intros in one of the pools. I decided at nearly random to give it a try. I WAS HOOKED. Never looked back. Q: When did you become an PRO (DIvemaster/Instructor) and why? A: I am still working on it, but I began my Divemaster candidacy in very late Fall of 2018. I decided to become a Divemaster because I wanted to learn not only to dive skillfully, but also help others to do the same. As they say, the best way to learn is to lead. That, plus I had some pretty badass PADI Pro role models. Q:Whats your favourite thing to teach? A: I sort of love all courses, but being a DM on Advanced Open Water. AOW Students are those that want to carry the skill on past tropical vacations, so its cool to the meet people who are reaaalllyyy bitten by the diving bug! Q:Favourite dive experience so far? A: I dont want to cop out of specificity, but anytime that Im under water, Im pretty happy. Q: Favourite food/drink? A: Anything with mole sauce, and Tequila. Q:Favourite activity OTHER than diving? A:Im pretty fond of working.... Hanging out with the family is an almost imperceptibly close second. Q:One little know fact about you that you are willing to share?? A:When I was younger, I had a major crush on Rachael Ray. #diveshopcalgary #scuba #padi #yycscuba #yycscubadiving #yycscubadivers #calgary #calgaryalberta #stayhome #staysafe #stayhealthy #flattenthecurve #washyourhands @ Calgary, Alberta

Meet Nisbet! I was born in Scotland, moved to Canada in 71 to Toronto then Calgary in 75. Been here ever since. Q: When did you get certified and why? ... A: I got certified in 2007 after a trip to Cuba where I was snorkeling on the surface and saw a group of diver below me. Thought that it would be way better if I could stay down longer to look at all the cool things. Next thing I knew Im diving in Egypt and getting my mind blown. It was like being in a National Geographic video!! Q: When did you become a Pro (DIvemaster/Instrucor) and why? A: I became a DIvemaster in 2011 as I enjoyed helping the new divers. Then it was on to Instructor in 2013. I also achieved my Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating in 2013. Q: Whats your favourite thing to teach? A: I enjoy teaching sidemount and night diving. Sidemount for the extra range that it opens up. Night diving as it can be the most relaxing type of diving. Plus the critters are out at night. Q: Favourite dive experience so far? A: I have dove 37 different locations in all kinds of conditions. Deepest dive was in Bonaire to 225ft. It gets a little dark there. But I would have to say that Truk lagoon in Micronesia has been my favourite so far, diving the wrecks of the Japanese fleet from WW2. Nuclear missile silo in Washington may of been a close second. Q: Favourite food/drink? A: Steak and beer. Q: Whats your favourite activity OTHER than diving?? A: I like to snowboard and build custom cars. Q: One little know fact about you that you are willing to share?? A: I play didgeridoo! #diveshopcalgary #scuba #padi #yycscuba #yycscubadiving #yycscubadivers #calgary #calgaryalberta #stayhome #staysafe #stayhealthy #flattenthecurve #washyourhands @ Calgary, Alberta

Meet Bill! Born and raised in Hamilton. Graduated from McMaster U. in 1970. Moved to Alberta in 1976. Q: When did you get certified and why?... A: I got certified in 1992. I had always wanted to since I was around 14 when I watched a neighbour at my parents cottage diving below me (I was in my boat) in Scuba with a junky old fish rod catching more fish than me. I have been free diving since about 12 but the scuba thing got interrupted by life until my 15 yr old son came home from scout camp to tell us about his Discover Scuba experience. That rekindled the flame and later that year on a Christmas vacation my sons and I did a Discover experience together in Mexico. That confirmed it and the following summer I got certified in Calgary at The Dive Shop. Q: When did you become a Pro (DIvemaster/Instructor) and why? A: I got certified as a DM and the AI In March 1999, and OWSI in Apr 2000. Why? I was encouraged by the store staff, it looked like fun, and I was already thinking about something to keep me busy in retirement. Q: Whats your favourite thing to teach? A: Favourite thing to teach: people, otherwise, hard to say. I like the variety. Q: Favourite dive experience so far? A: There have been thousands. No way to pick one. But once again I do like variety. My favourite activities include the adventure of big animal encounters, the the technical precision of cave diving, the relaxed atmosphere of tropical vacations and the art of UW photography. Q: Favourite food/drink? A: Cant help you with this favourite food thing either. I like food. I enjoy a good glass of wine with dinner, a cold beer on a warm evening, and wee dram of Irish or Scotch whiskey on a quiet evening. Q: Favourite activity OTHER than diving? A: Favourite non diving activity these days would have to be a walk or hike in the woods on a sunny day. Q: One little know fact about you that you are willing to share?? A: My taste in popular music spans 100 years from the days of earliest recordings till now. #diveshopcalgary #scuba #padi #yycscuba #yycscubadiving #yycscubadivers #calgary #calgaryalberta #staysafe #stayhome #stayhealthy #washyourhands @ Calgary, Alberta

Some punny - but important - guidelines from PADI to consider as we start to look at getting back in the water. And for goodness sake - quit spitting in your mask! Its gross!

We miss the water, we miss the fish, but most importantly - we miss all of you. The water is still there, waiting, and - a few small steps at a time - well get back to diving. Were here for you in the meantime - whether it be gear service, training questions, getting that missing piece for your kit, or just really needing to talk about diving - feel free to drop us a note. In the meantime - wash your hands. #wedivelocal
