We hate sounding like a broken record, but mindfulness is not just about meditating. Mindfulness can be used throughout your day with the most mundane tasks. Mindfulness is about being present and activating all of your senses to enhance your experience. Being mindful removes our attention from regrets of the past and worry about the future and allows us to wholeheartedly engage in the task at hand. It is an awareness of our thoughts, feelings, actions and the environment sur...rounding us. Here are 5 everyday tasks where you can practice informal mindfulness: 1. Washing Dishes: Smell the dishwashing liquid, feeling the bubbles on your hands, listening to the water run, watching the sponge wash the dishes clean. 2. Walking in Nature: Smell the earth in the air, feel the breeze on your face, listen to the rustling of the leaves or gravel under your feet, observe the colours of the season. 3. Driving: Feel your hands grasping the steering wheel, listen to the sounds around you, observe what you are driving by, roll the window down and smell the air. 4. Dancing: What instruments do you hear? How does the song make you feel? How does your body want to move? 5. Showering: Listen to the water as it hits the ground, smell the soap; how does the water feel when it hits your head? Watch the water as it rolls off of you cleansing you of any worries, giving you a fresh start. Let us help you cultivate more mindfulness in your life! Forgiveness is not always an easy thing to do depending on our experiences, but forgiveness really is for us. It is a choice that we make to heal our heart, soul and spirit. And not only that. Many of us are unaware of the connection between the inability to forgive and the how the brain and body are compromised as a result. When you are unable to forgive, here is what happens: 1) Rumination: constantly thinking about the issue, reinforces our negative emotions by creating ...stronger neural pathways (recalling the issue becomes easier) 2) Diminished memory: when we remain stressed for longs periods of time (i.e., we refuse to forgive), cortisol actually causes our memory center, the hippocampus, to atrophy 3) Amplified negative emotions: prolonged stress also strengthens our amygdala and amplifies our sensitivity to anger, sadness, fear and aggression making us even more susceptible to further hurt and pain How can we start the process of forgiveness? Write a letter to someone you need to forgivethis can also be yourself; you do not have to send letter. The process of writing is a therapeutic, safe, non-judgemental place to organize your thoughts and feelings towards the person or issue. Take your time to complete the letter as different emotions may arise over time. Tuck it away when you feel you need a break from the confronting the hurt. Once completed, focus on letting go and releasing the resentment and anger. Remember, this is so the shackles of pain can be broken and your freedom to live wholeheartedly is restored. It is funny how many of us feel guilty when we want to take a little time for ourselves because of the demands from work, home and family. Tending to our needs never seems to make the daily to do list. When we neglect ourselves and do not carve time for self-care or self-love practices, we can begin to feel resentful, frustrated and angry with the people in our life. And we have all experienced our emotions being aired out like dirty laundry when life feels like too much to... handle. The truth is, putting yourself first is essential especially if you want to offer yourself and others the best version of YOU. We are not saying that you need to go away on an extended vacation or book weekly spa visits (although that sounds really good, especially right now). What we are hoping to do is help you understand that creating a daily routine that gives you an opportunity to reflect in quiet, set intentions, pray, journal, read, meditate, or just breathe can set you up for a fulfilling day. Imagine your favourite hot beverage in one hand and solitude giving you a big hug. This daily practice can be done any time during the day where you will be guaranteed those moments of peace. For us, having a regular early wake up time (before anyone else is up) sets the tone for our day and gives us the opportunity to share with our loved ones our overflowing cup. Do you have a daily self-care or self-love routine? We would love to hear what you do!
