Celebrating Business Resilience Amidst Pandemic. By: Jerry Caingcoy, TFCC Founder & President Finally, I was able to meet and chat with the woman behind this fast-rising Filipino-owned ice cream shop located in Bowness Road, Northwest Calgary.... Meet Abbey Claro of Abbey’s Creations. She came to Canada in 2009 as a contract worker for a fastfood company then worked for an ice cream shop where she gained her experience in ice cream making, store management and operation. With the combined hands-on experience, knowledge and skills of Abbey and her business partner, they ventured into their own ice cream shop in May 2020, just after a month the pandemic began. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, they were able to hire at least 10 staff during the summer to meet their customer's demand. 'In order to survive in your business, you must have passion on what you do. I've spent many hours, even staying late at night to create different flavors for our customers satisfaction.' Abbey said. Currently, there are 32 flavors on the shelf that they offer but according to Abbey, she has approximately 80 flavors that she can make. As a Filipino, she made some of our favourite flavors as well such as pandan, avocado, mango, queso, halo-halo, ube, queso-ube and kalamansi among her best sellers. They also serve coffee and specialty ice cream cakes. Friends, give them some love and have a taste of the finest ice cream flavors in town. I've had my fill of their all-time favorites and even bought a couple of tubs home. Let's continue to support local and help relaunch businesses in our community. According to Globe and Mail, COVID-19 has destroyed countless small businesses. But entrepreneurship has always been about rebirth. Nevertheless, the time to celebrate entrepreneurial resilience is now.
