And finally, a BIG congratulations to the Sydney Steelers for their Competitive Division win! This is the first time in the Tournament’s history that the Steelers, and Matthew Fitzgerald’s brother, Brad Fitzgerald have won the coveted Fitzy trophy!

Today we remember Matthew and the reason why we host the annual Matthew Fitzgerald hockey tournament. Through this tournament we keep his memory amd spirit alive and give back to the community through high school scholarships. Matthew was kind, generous and fiercely loyal to his friends and those in need. ... This year will mark the 10th Anniversary. Can’t wait to see you in December. What a celebration it will be after a two year hiatus

Sad to report our 2021 FITZY TOURNEY is postponed again this year. It is important for us to maintain all the special elements of this memorable event and as such, with current necessary protocols in place, we are sitting this year out again for the safety of everyone! That has not stopped our scholarship awards all through the pandemic - we continue to support our high school students and our important Trades Industry for Cape Breton! ... Hello FITZY Family and Friends! While we’ve had some challenges due to cancellations of our beloved FITZY tournament; we are so happy to present this years $2500.00 scholarship award winner! Parker Burke, a Sydney Academy graduate who is heading to NSCC Marconi to study Heavy Equipment repair!... This young man is a force to be reckoned with! His teacher John Fraser could not say enough about his high integrity character and incredible work ethic. Not only did he pass grade 12 with honours, but he also completed work terms, volunteer projects amd held several jobs all while completing grade 12! Thank you to all who continued to support our event by purchasing hoodies and toques even when our tournament was cancelled! We appreciate YOU and could not do it without you! Fingers crossed for a December 2021 return!!! We absolutely can not wait to see you all again and have Parker @ center ice to drop the puck and open up our 2021 Tournament! With your continued support of this tournament, Emma received a $2500.00 a...ward to help with her program costs! Her field of study reflects the type of caring human she is and we couldn’t be prouder to have her join the list of 8 award winners so far! Friends... that is $20,000 given to students studying a Trade here in Cape Breton! Thank you for your continued support and love! As we all manage our new reality and on this particular weekend where our family would be egg hunting, playing games and cooking.... oh my the food .... As always my Heart is with Matthew and his love of anything related to food .....but more Importantly his Love of sharing food with anyone in need Always packing more food than he needed for himself heading out the door, and always bringing a friend or two back for meals was a common practice for him! ... Many of you may not know but The FITZY Tournament plays tribute to Matthew’s character and his need to always ensure everyone had tons of food! That is why my beloved family and friends and I cook all his favourite foods all weekend long during the tournament.... a little nod to what he’d do for so many at such a young age. I hope you get to share food somehow, someway this weekend for someone who may be in need.... Happy Easter from the Fitzy Family!

As we close out another year, it’s fitting to send out our sincere thank you to so many family and friends for another successful tournament. IT IS LONG BUT IMPORTANT TO THANK EVERYONE! This tournament is built with 2 goals in mind; to keep Matthews memory and spirit alive and to help a student entering a career in a Trade by offering a $2500.00 award at their graduation. A large part of what makes the Fitzy what it is is the inclusion of our Peewee Division! The energy that fills the rink with the arrival of these young players is electric! This year, three teams from Glace Bay, and one team brave team from Cole Harbour made up our Peewee Division! We want to congratulation Glace Bay Team 2, The Snipers, on their Fitzy Championship win!!!!
