AAAH JUNE EVENT SCHEDULE IS LIVE! I am so excited to be seeing all of your cute faces in person again real soon, and I am thrilled to be at TWO night markets this year. Summer by the Sea Night Market is on Craig Street in Parksville every Tuesday night starting on June 14 and Commercial Street Night Market is on Commercial Street in Nanaimo every Thursday starting June 23! Both of these go until the beginning of September. ... I am also SO EXCITED to be returning to CoVaCon this year! I have two tables and they will be chock full of keychains, wallets, enamel pins, stickers, socks, and SO MUCH MORE! I hope to see you at one or more of these events, and if you aren't able to make it, I can alway ship to you! Stock may vary as items will get taken to conventions, but any website stock numbers are in real time because everything runs through my website, so at least you can see if there is still something in stock. I also always take custom requests. I cannot always guarantee that I can find/bring in your requested item, but I am always willing to look! Other than CoVaCon I don't have any comic convention events planned or booked until October, because I work a Sunday job and it's pretty rude to take every weekend off when you only work once a week As things continue to get safer, I will look into other events and please feel free to send me a message recommending events to me, especially if they are on a Saturday! Today's profile will be about Nelson Mandela, arguably one of the most well-known Black people from our recent history. I know, I know, Nelson Mandela Day is in July, however; today (February 11) is the anniversary of when Mandela was released from prison in 1990, so it only seemed fitting to write his profile today. Nelson Mandela was the first Black president of South Africa, elected after time in prison for his anti-apartheid work. He won the Nobel Peace Prize ...in 1993 (Biography.com, 2017). Fun fact: Mandela's African name "Rolihlahla" means "troublemaker." (Biography.com, 2017). There is so much information available about Mandela, that I was overwhelmed in my research, but I hope that I have summed up his impacts on the world in this post in an easily digestible and interesting way. In 1966, Mary Van Brittan Brown co-invented a device that she used to see through peepholes in her door who was outside the door without having to open said door (I didn't think I could use the word door so many times in one sentence). She added additional features, including a microphone, and buttons to unlock the door as well as contact the police. Her inspiration for this device was her discomfort in her area at night, especially when her husband was away, and ...her distrust of the local police. This invention was crucial in the development of modern home security systems, and many systems use features based on Brown's design. I'm not sure how this has happened, but it is only ONE MONTH until my birthday, which means it's only 1 month until A Geeky Christmas Market! This event is being held on it's own website (www.ageekychristmasmarket.weebly.com) and features nerdy vendors from all over the world. All of the vendors are small businesses that offer incredible nerdy products, and there are so many great items to choose from. Although products are not guaranteed to arrive in time for Christm...as, there is something extremely special about receiving items after Christmas as an added surprise.
