We've had so many people ask us if "all that government money" couldn't save our business. We are continuing to explore our options but it's important that non-business owners really understand the landscape for small business right now. a) The Canadian Emergency Business Account that is being offered is an interest free LOAN, not a bail out. b) Most of us have put everything we had in savings and credit in to building and maintaining these businesses and aren’t in a positi...on to go further in debt. Particularly with an uncertain future. c) The wage subsidy is not cash in hand to pay staff but a credit against taxes to the government. d) A huge number of small businesses (like our own) are not even eligible for the loan or the subsidy. Many are owner-operators, often working unpaid, and as a result our payroll is not high enough to qualify. Today, we spoke to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses who said that currently 50% of small businesses like ours are posed to fail by mid May. Think of what that means for your community. #cebawontsaveus

Without being able to operate for the foreseeable future, and without any real sense of when business will begin again; we have decided to permanently close @thegeneralpec effective immediately. I loved every day I spent in this store. I will miss it dearly. Most of all I will miss seeing, connecting with and serving the thousands of people that visited me there. Thank you to everybody who contributed to the store to every supplier, employee, customer and loiterer. We made something special together.
