This week's songwriting challenge is to create a song about a cartoon character - use one that exists or make up your own. Thanks Dave Combden for the great suggestion!!!

Sorry, I apologize, I have been lax! Today's songwriting challenge is to write a song for a movie, or a soundtrack. This might have been one of my favourite challenges I have made for myself, I set parameters to meet (nothing longer than 2 min, no more than 4 instruments) and I think I had a month to do 12 songs.... So fun. The movie does not have to be real, you can create the premise, or make a song for an existing movie.

JAM DAY! We are continuing our social distance and still on this songwriting challenge! This week's challenge is to write a song with either a) a chord you have never used, or, b) a chord progression you have never used. Thanks so much to everyone who has been creating all their amazing tunes! Hopefully we all have some stuff to jam with after this is all done.

I am days late, sorry. Songwriting challenge this week is about flying, flying machines, planes, helicopters, anything. Since most of us are grounded so sky's the limit on your imagination. Thanks Dave Combden for the idea!!!

These songwriting challenges have been REALLY AMAZING!! I am really inspired by what everyone is making. This week's songwriting challenge is to write a song in a genre that you have never written in. I have been stewing over this one because I have played in latin bands, metal bands, country bands, swing bands, etc.... I hope that you're having fun making this, I am really enjoying everyone's creations. I try to make a post to share with the community on Wednesdays.

Sorry about the delay! This week's songwriting challenge is to write a HIT SONG. Use those cliches, steal chord changes, do whatever you think you have to. When Kurt Cobain wrote "Smells like Teen Spirit" he knew that he had something. Paul McCartney said that him and John Lennon would say that "this one would buy us a pool". Make a HIT. Whatever that means to you - maybe that just means create the best song possible. Post it here and I will do my best to share it around.

"Oh the glory of true love Is a wild and precious thing It dont grow on old magnolias Or only blossom in the spring" ... I miss you. But then again, I miss everyone. This week's Greenhill Jam songwriting challenge, out of reverence and respect for John Prine, is to write a song either in his style or as a commemoration/ homage. If can - write a song, if you can't write a song - share one, if you can't share go back to kindergarten. Share your creation by posting your song to our Facebook page please.

Jam day and that means its time to post your doo-wop song (and stay home) so we can hear it, it also means a new songwriting challenge! Today's songwriting challenge is write us a country song, but this has a twist. The song must be an anti-corona song - like corona broke your heart, stole your truck, took your girlfriend/boyfriend. Remember STAY AWAY and know that I miss seeing your face!! If you can - stay home, if you can't stay home - stay home, if you still can't stay home you're probably essential and know we're thankful for you.

The Greenhill Jam 22.02.2020

Check out Travis B Johnson's Greenhill Jam Doo-Wop songwriting challenge!! AWESOME TRAVIS! A million thanks, I love the talking towards the end - I was tempted to do that too. https://www.youtube.com/watch LOVE IT!!!

The Greenhill Jam 03.02.2020

You might be bored as heck but here at the Greenhill Jam we're devising solutions! I (Tynan here) have been mulling in my mind what to do and I have devised a series of songwriting challenges while we're all stuck in our homes, isolated (for the foreseeable future). This week's songwriting challenge is to write a doo-wop song, one of those 50's/60's love ballads and post it on the GH jam page...Youtube it, Soundcloud it, Reverbnation it - whatever your platform is post it so we can share in it. I know its a day early for the jam but this is the heads up, try and have it posted by next Wednesday (April 1st)...

The Greenhill Jam 20.01.2020

The Greenhill is obviously complying with Alberta Health's mandate, that means NO JAM today or tonight! Stay healthy out there and we will keep you posted to when we will start up again.

The Greenhill Jam 07.01.2020

JAM DAY! And its the CNP music festival - so much music in the Pass today - I encourage you to come check out the Symphony at ISS tonight at 6:30. The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. Jam challenge is songs that were inspired by classical chord progression, for example: "Blackbird" by the Beatles was inspired by Bach's Bourrée. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen - go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 01.01.2020

Thinking about Nashville this week. So, the Greenhill Jam challenge will be songs by Nashville writers - Bob Wills, Guy Clark, Chuck Berry, Leadbelly, Roy Orbison, the list is massive. The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 27.12.2019

JAM DAY IS MASH UP DAY at the Greenhill Jam! As opposed to taking one song and imposing another on it, instead today, lets put a song into another genre. I had great success playing a Slayer tune as a jazz inspired number the other day. What madness can you concoct? Metallica Merengue? Country Clave? Red Hot Chili Peppers Rhapsody? The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play (we love all instruments), if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 17.12.2019

JAM DAY! And escape the kids day at the Greenhill, we know you've been trapped with your children for days! Jam challenge is songs about family: Sly and the Family Stone, "Family Tradition", "We are Family", etc. The afternoon jam is 2pm to 5pm, and the evening jam is 9pm till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 29.11.2019

Oh man, there is love in the air! Today's jam challenge was an easy one, VALENTINES! Now, we're looking for songs with valentines in the lyrics, title, or band name (I am thinking maybe My Bloody Valentine). The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 19.11.2019

OH BABY ITS WEDNESDAY!!! Today is songs with Kansas in them, or bands with Kansas, OR DOUBLE YOUR JAM POINTS by replacing Kansas with Missouri, or visa versa. The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen mistake a state.

The Greenhill Jam 07.11.2019

Afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play -listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 23.10.2019

It may be cold outside but its warm in our hearts! JAM DAY BABY.... Today's jam challenge is heat, fire, warmth, tropical, etc. I am thinking "Fire" by Hendrix or maybe a bunch of Bob Marley. Afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late! If you can come and play, if you can' play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 05.10.2019

WEDNESDAY=JAM DAY!!!! How is it January 8th already? Today's jam challenge is songs that have bar in the lyrics, I am thinking of "Whiskey Bar" by the Doors. The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late. If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go back into politics.

The Greenhill Jam 19.09.2019

Oh BABY WE DID IT!!! 2020. The Greenhill is open at noon today and the jam is ON. The Jam challenge is anything new: a new song, New Kids on the Block, songs with new in the title, bands with new in their name. The afternoon jam is 2-5 and the evening jam is 9 till late! If you can come and play, if you can't play - listen, if you can't listen go into politics.
