Happy horses sunning themselves. Many people are surprised that horses lie down to sleep. While they can nap standing up, in order to sleep deeply and dream, they have to lie down. They will only do this when they feel safe, and for most domesticated horses, that's only in the very wee hours of the dark, between 2 and 5 am. They will lie down and have a good dream in daylight, but only when they truly feel safe. This is another advantage of our style of horsekeeping: in a herd, individuals can feel safe and rest comfortably during the day.
