Wednesday, December 16 - some Herbert children gathered at Prairie Wind Estate. The young people stood outside the windows and sang for the residents. This is another way that the youth are showing their appreciation for the elderly during the pandemic. Pictures by Shawne Gunstenson

A Droxford Church memory - by Lance and Karen Menke We have been asking anyone that attended or knows anything about the Droxford Church to submit their stories. Sylvia Knudsen sent in this story. My husband, Milton and I started going to Droxford Church in the 1980’s until it closed in 2000.... Student pastors came out from Caronport to lead the service. It worked very well! Lasting friendships developed with these families. These things I remember was the gospel music and fellowship we had (picnics at Besant Park, gospel music evenings, Christmas programs, youth group, Sunday School and lots of pot luck meals). We held vacation bible school in Chaplin for a few years with the help of the United and Lutheran Churches. I remember some of the Chaplin teen girls helped us which was really appreciated and made it fun for the little ones. Milton led a youth group with the help of others. They did a lot of outdoor activities (campouts, hiking, bonfires and Bible discussion). He really enjoyed the interaction with each person. They were eager to take part in everything! One amazing activity I remember was one Sunday the pastor and family were bringing out a tom cat from Caronport for us. They fed the animal before driving out. Driving with the cat loose in the car was a serious mistake. On the drive out to Droxford - the cat threw up on the kids and the back seat! The pastor stopped and tried to clean up the mess and he got sick. Then they got to the church - they opened the door and the cat ran away. Karen said to them well that was a CATastrophe. They didn’t think it was funny. Later in the summer, we discovered the cat living under a tombstone in the graveyard with a family of kittens. The tom cat turned out to be female! So we gathered her and her kittens and took them home. We called the mom, Tombstone and she lived a good life at the Knudsen farm. Please phone Lance or Karen Menke at 353-2227 or email your stories/pictures to [email protected]. Please note the new email. See more

Clint and Pamela Mathies recently travelled to Ontario for their 5 year anniversary in November, 2015. They stopped to read the Herbert Herald while hiking by Niagara Falls. (If you look closely you might see Clint and Pamela on the front page!) Pamela's friend Kristen Hutchison of Toronto also wanted to read about what’s new in Herbert since her last visit. Clint and Pamela also cheered on the Roughriders at a football game in Hamilton on their anniversary.

Joyce Aitken releases her book - Sincere Condolences by Thelma Caldwell A familiar face, Joyce Aitken, former CAO at the town of Central Butte, visited Central Butte town office and the Tugaske Library on Friday, December 4 with copies of her newly released book: Sincere Condolences. It was a great opportunity for people to pick up a copy of her book and for Joyce to see familiar faces in both communities. It felt like am impromptu block party as people in Tugaske enjo...yed visiting outside the library in the glorious sunshine, while waiting in line to get their book. The book is a practical guide on how to respond to other people’s grief and tragic loss. Written from Joyce’s personal experiences after her husband’s death by suicide, this book provides advice and encouragement to anyone wanting to provide truly compassionate support to those who have experienced loss. Grief is such a taboo subject in our culture. Most of us can find suitable words of sympathy when the loss is someone who has lived a good, long, life. When death is tragic and unexpected many people struggle to know how to respond. Really the book came about from people asking me for suggestion in how to support their friend or colleague who just experienced tragic loss. People always worry about saying or doing the wrong thing. My goal is to give people a sense of confidence that when they reach out to the bereaved their efforts will be effective and meaningful. Joyce’s book is available through her directly by contacting her at: [email protected], or through Amazon.ca, Kobo.com, Barnsandnoble.com and will soon be available in major bookstores. See more

A new ramp at Iver Main Place from the patio to ground level was built this fall by Jamie Dumonceau on the north side of the building. This now allows residents access to the outside space to enjoy an exercise program under the current COVID-19 restrictions. The project was made possible due to volunteers donating their time and materials, a grant from the United Way Regina and fundraisers such as a raffle and prize donated by Farmhouse Beverages.

Perinatal Walk held in Central Butte Ryan and Audra Peterson family and Konnor's Krew hosted the first annual walk/run/ride event for perinatal loss awareness month for October. Their family usually participates in Regina, but this year due to Covid and to change things up they were able to give back to their community and bring things home! They have always received the utmost support from our community over the years. November 18, 2020 marks the sixth year, since they ... lost their son Konnor who was born still. This year, they are looking at paying it forward and to give back to the families in our community. Perinatal Loss is any loss of a child due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or within the first year of life. Unfortunately, many families have suffered the loss of a child and together they can support one another. On October 3, 2020, departing from the Letts Splash & Play Park, the route headed out of town, and back in by the airport, and finished back at the splash park, which was 3.5kms. Walkers, runners, bike riders of all ages participated. The Peterson family was overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone! They had 130 participants in groups of 30 people head out in delayed 30 minute start times starting at 1 pm - and the last walker came back at 4:15pm! It was absolutely gorgeous out. Registration was all by donation and all money raised was donated to the 2021 Playground Project for the Splash Park! The Petersons are grateful to everyone who supported them. Due to this they were able to give back a GRAND TOTAL of $3,000.00 to their beautiful community!!! The winner of the door prize, a Hudson Candle Co. Toasted Marshmallow Candle, was Brennan Peterson!! Herbert Herald to Newfoundland! Former Herbert resident, Linda Andres, travelled to Newfoundland in August/2015 to celebrate her 88th birthday. Linda accompanied her son, Ken, and his wife Linda on a wonderful tour of St. John;s and the Burin Peninsula. She especially enjoyed Cape Spear - the most easterly point of Canada, and Signal Hill. In this photo, Linda poses with two members of the Signal Hill Tattoo - which is an informative and entertaining program about the different military groups in Newfoundland’s history. Linda worked in the Herbert Nursing Home and was the Director of Care at the Herbert Heritage Manor for many years. She now resides in Bassano, Alberta - close to her children and grandchildren.

Central Butte & District Health Care Foundation Board purchases van - submitted by Marg Gould In January of 2020, two representatives from a group of community members representing Committee for Improving Health Care in the area approached the Central Butte & District Health Care Foundation Board to present a proposal for the purchase a wheelchair accessible van. The purpose of this van was to provide a means of transportation for members of the various communities (who ...are in a wheelchair) that belong to the Health Care Foundation. This would allow them to go to appointments in the city. The Health Care Foundation purchased the van and had the van licensed so it was ready to be used. It is a 2005 Dodge Caravan which is equipped with a professionally installed wheelchair/scooter access. The wheel chair/scooter can be secured onto the recessed floor for safe and secure travel. The van is driven by a volunteer/member of the family that have been approved as drivers. Anyone wishing to book the van - can do so by contacting the Central Butte Town Office. This is another way that the Health Care Foundation is Enhancing Our Local Health Care Service. Pictured are some of the members of the Central Butte and District Health Foundation Board standing with the Medical Appointment Van - (l - r) Gary Adrian, Tom Molsberry, Kevin Wilson, Brian May See more
