I found this business plan the other day while sorting through papers, so I thought I would share the story about how The Hive came to be! Oscar took the kids for an afternoon so I could have a break. This was back in early May 2020 I believe. Right bang smack in the middle of all the craziness. As an extreme extrovert, I had been forced to work from home with all my other jobs, and it wasn't a super great space for me. Now, you guys all know Stuthornes, and due to a few dif...ferent reasons, they had just recently left their main street Nanton location, and since we are neighbours, I could see them moving all of the stuff from their previous building, into their garage. Now, the building that The Hive is in now had been listed for quite a few years, and I had always had my eye on it to use as a honey house. BUT, it had a commercial kitchen in it, which was really of no use to us, and Bee My Honey was not big enough to really justify using the space as that just yet. I thought about all the other small businesses that might be in the same boat as us. I was certain that they would be happy to have a retail space to sell their products, but none of us were big enough to need our own full store. Working together was the solution! So I walked over to Laurie and Lori's house and told them that I was thinking of purchasing a building in town. Without any further explanation Laurie replied "We'd be great tenants!!". So, we contacted Lively Realty Ltd. that night to schedule a viewing of the building. It was May 14 that we did view the building because it was my birthday, so that I will remember! We also went to Roy's Place Claresholm that night because that was the first day restaurants were allowed to open after the first lockdown. We met with Laurie and Lori for many mid cul-de-sac meetings while my kids found worms. We came up with plan A, plan B, Plan C on how to make it work, and we texted back in forth. There were times I doubted everything, but the teamwork was remarkable. We applied for a commercial loan from a few different places, but I can't say enough positive things about ATB Nanton for believing in our dreams during a time of uncertainty. We took possession of the building on July 10, 2020 and we had our Grand Opening during the August long weekend. I remember all of those things vaguely, but literally the rest is a blur of exhaustion and excitement. So today, as I reflect on this crazy journey that started less than a year ago, I am going to do my best to take in everything day to day with this very special business going forward! Oh, and you guessed it right... Oscar doesn't offer to take the kids very often anymore! Consequences might be HUGE! LOL.
