Businesses are facing challengesunlike any they have ever seen. Forcing an abrupt dislocation of how employees work, how customers behave, how supply chains function, and even what constitutes performance. Confronting this unique moment, CEOs have shifted how they lead in expedient and ingenious ways. The changes were born of necessity, but they have immense potential beyond this crisis. Four shifts are making CEOs better leaders: bolder 10x aspirations, to be list ris...ing to the same level as to do, fully embracing stakeholder capitalism, and harnessing the full power of their CEO peer networks. Should these shifts become permanent, it’s not an exaggeration to state they hold the potential Under pandemic pressure, the previously thought impossible is perpetually being accomplished. In a week, companies went from having 100,000 people working in offices to having 100,000 people working from homea shift requiring systems and policy transformation that under normal circumstances would have taken years. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), for example, scheduled 2,000 telehealth visits in 2019. It is now handling 5,000 a weeka goal that, prior to the pandemic, it had estimated would be accomplished several years from now and only after a large-scale transformation CEOs are recognizing that the barriers to boldness and speed are less about technical limits and more about what the right mindset can do when policy and bureaucracy gets out of the way.
