In 2020, 629 different species of flora and fauna were documented on the nature preserves and conservation easements that TKC protects. This includes a whopping 432 species that had never been documented on TKC protected property in the past. Have you ever wondered how we keep track of these species? Find out in our latest blog post!

The next Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas starts in 2021. This is an important five-year survey that maps out where our birds are breeding across the province. We expect that we'll be able to provide lots of data on breeding birds from TKC preserves! Learn more about the project and how you can get involved at the link below.

TKC Photo Feature! Recently, we took our canoe through the Black Hole Preserve. We were on our way back out when something red caught my eye. We turned around to found this interesting specimen! Apparently a Painted Suillus? Interesting! Photo and caption by Jackie Junor Learn more about Painted Suillus here: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/782231-Suillus-spraguei

Thanks so much to all the participants who toughed out the weather on Saturday and made the 2020 Fall Migration Birding Big Day a success. In total, we collectively recorded 92 species of birds and raised $585 to go towards local bird conservation. The highlight was a Long-billed Dowitcher, a species of shorebird that hasn't been recorded in the Algoma District since 2011. Some of the other highlights include Barred Owl (shown below), Black-bellied Plover, Bonaparte's Gull, Sharp-tailed Grouse, and Red-shouldered Hawk.
