We have been receiving an increase in calls regarding sick and disoriented raccoons. Distemper is a highly contagious canine virus now present in nearly all raccoon populations. It is in fact the second leading cause of death for raccoons. Distemper is very easily picked up from the environment and was responsible for the death of many pets before the introduction of a vaccine. ... Once a raccoon or other wild animal is infected, there is little to no chance of survival. This is not the fate you want for your pets. Please make sure your dogs, cats and ferrets are up to date with the recommended vaccinations!

Dogs are not built to be physically and mentally stimulated for long periods of time. Overstimulation can cause aggression and inappropriate play. Daycare and dog parks are for well-socialized, stable, behaviourally sound dogs who are reliably appropriate with other dogs and enjoy play. Daycare and dog parks are not meant to socialize your dog. ... To learn more visit The Centre for Canine Education Inc. blog: https://bit.ly/3bOwUOz

Supplements intended for human use may contain levels that are unsafe for pets or have harmful additives or sweeteners. Cod liver oil, for example, is not generally recommended for pets. The concentration of vitamin A in cod liver oil can be much too high for companion animals already eating a balanced diet. Too much vitamin A causes an imbalance in bone remodelling, artery and vein degeneration, central nervous system depression, joint pain and dehydration. ... Always ask your veterinarian before giving any supplement or medication!

October is Veterinary Technician Appreciation Month. A Veterinary Technician is a trained professional with a separate and vital role in veterinary medicine. A Veterinary Technician is not a ‘wannabe’ veterinarian. Veterinary Technicians are crucial to everyday clinical practice, surgery, emergency medicine and animal welfare. ... In human healthcare the responsibilities and expertise of a Veterinary Technician are divided amongst nurses, anesthesiologists, radiation technologists, laboratory technologists, respiratory therapists, phlebotomists, dieticians, physiotherapists and others. Help us say thank you to our Veterinary Technicians, Alex and Krysten. We couldn’t manage without them!

NEW STUDY - Grain-free, small brand diets vs traditional recipe, large brand diets. The grain-free, small company brands used included Acana, Orijen, Fromm, The Honest Kitchen, Kirkland Signature, and Taste of the Wild. The traditional recipe diets included Purina Pro Plan, Purina One, Royal Canin, and Eukanuba. ... 86 dogs were studied. 43 were fed traditional diets and 43 were fed the non-traditional diets. Measured parameters included the diet fed, fractional shortening (a cardiovascular measurement of the change in the heart's diameter when contracting), left ventricular diameter measured via echocardiogram, and both whole blood and plasma taurine levels. The findings? Dogs fed the small company non traditional diets had significantly lower whole blood taurine concentrations compared to dogs fed the traditional diets and echocardiographic parameters, including left ventricular diameter, and fractional shortening, were significantly more abnormal in the non-traditional group. The authors concluded that the study affirmed their hypothesis and further validates the findings of multiple previous studies and the FDA alert. Grain-free, small companies diets, including legumes within the top 5 ingredients represent a risk for the development of taurine deficiency and echocardiographic abnormalities consistent with dilated cardiomyopathy. Grain-free, small brand diets pose an unnecessary risk to your dog. Please choose a traditional diet manufactured by a company that meets the global standards in safety and nutrition. Have questions? Ask your vet. To read more on this study visit: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file

Beatrice is staying with us while patiently waiting for someone kind to adopt her. This loving senior was part of a hoarding seizure in Quebec. Senior pets that find themselves in the overcrowded Quebec shelter system are often euthanized without ever being offered for adoption. We believe this sweet and affectionate lady deserves the chance to find a loving home. Please consider Beatrice if you are looking for a feline companion. ... If interested please call the clinic and ask for Jennifer or reach out to her rescue directly at Long Branch Animal Rescue and Adoptions.

When it comes to rearing a well-adjusted and happy kitten, paying attention to early social development is a must. For kittens and young cats that have not reached the 2-year mark, playmates are an integral part of social development. Cat behaviorists now know that kittens raised without kitty companionship suffer long term health effects. They often lack biting and scratching restraint as adults and are at increased risk for developing other inappropriate behaviour disorders. Please choose an adult cat if you are unable to commit to adopting a pair of kittens. These two cuties are available for adoption through Long Branch Animal Rescue and Adoptions.
