Learning to read at a young age is important because it develops the mind. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills and helps them learn to listen. In and amongst all of these benefits comes the ability to understand the written language in other subjects. We have begun working on very simple word problems in maths with a word problem of the day that my son reads aloud with me helping with the unknown words. They usually include a yummy treat to go along with it (marshmellows and chocolate chips are our go to treats). I am a mom first and foremost and know it isn't always easy to motivate your children to want to do work at home, sometimes a little bribing goes a long way!!!
This is my 4 year old son Dante. By 18 months he was able to recognize all the letters of the alphabet and by 3 he was confident with all his letters and initial letter sounds. Just shy of his 4th birthday in April I began teaching him the short vowel word families and the Dolch Sight Words.
