The end of the first decade of the 20th century heralded an end to the ranching era. The early 20th century saw Calgary transition towards becoming a mixed farming and agricultural economy. As a result in 1912, four former cattle barons popularly known as the Big Four put up $100,000 to hold the first Calgary Stampede, believing they were throwing a party to bid farewell to a bygone era, with no idea that it would become an annual international event and an icon for Calgary.... In 1892, one of the worst instances of anti-Chinese hostility in Alberta occurred in the first Chinatown, the 1892 Smallpox Riot. One Chinese resident had contracted smallpox in Vancouver. Upon his return to Calgary, he fell ill and nine Calgarians were infected. Fearing the spread of the disease, a mob of 300 men attacked a Chinese laundry, vandalizing property and injuring two men. The North West Mounted Police stepped in and offered the barracks as refuge for the targeted ...Chinese men. Want to learn more about Chinatown? The staff and volunteers at Lougheed House wish everyone a Happy Halloween. Our mansion was built in 1891 of the Victorian era when Halloween and rituals about death were an obsession. Queen Victoria, openly mourning her husband for 40 years, influenced Victorians' creation of elaborate rituals, superstitions and dress. Victorian England was driven by the idea of a "good death," an elaborate and strict set of Victorian practices requiring painstaking detail and a small fort...une. Failing to properly mourn on a grand scale was considered a societal and moral failure. Halloween parties were also common, and featured Halloween games that offset the more sincere associations with witchcraft or communing with the dead. Most Halloween games were connected to some kind of fortune telling, often predicting the kind of man a young woman would marry. This is a sample menu from a Halloween party in 1891.

Thanks to everyone who helped make sell outs of all 4 of our ghost story performances. With reduced seating, distancing, mask & cleaning measures in place, we've made our mansion spacious and safe. The only scary part is the tales told superbly by Zach Running Coyote and the team at Sage Theatre (our event partners). We'll bring more such modified events to our House this Christmas. Watch this space for details..
