Stittsville Market at The Barn 14.12.2020

December 6: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women We remember the 14 female engineering students who were murdered at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal on December 6, 1989 by an act of gender-based violence. We also remember the missing and murdered Indigenous women, the trans-women and each and every woman whose lives have been harmed or lost to gender-based violence. The 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, were killed in a gender-based... act of violence. They were: Geneviève Bergeron Hélène Colgan Nathalie Croteau Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Barbara Klucznik Widajewicz Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michèle Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte The day now represents a time to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also a day for communities and individuals to speak out against all forms of violence against women and its impact on victims and their families and friends.

Blessed and grateful are just some of the feelings that this picture gives me. November is Woman Abuse Awareness Month and during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence (Nov 25 - Dec 10), I visited Chrysalis House (a program of Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre), a shelter for women and children fleeing violence. Chrysalis House is near and dear to me as it is a place I worked on the front line for many years; starting just a few months after they first ...opened their doors. When Dan and I decided to buy the Barn, one thing was clear, we wanted to be a part of the community and that meant supporting the community. As a result of our larger markets, we were able to donate to the Stittsville Food Bank as well as Chrysalis House. To be able to give back to such a wonderful causes means so much, but to be able to go back to a place that has meant so much to me and present a donation is heart filling. Thank you to the vendors and community for allowing us this opportunity. #endvaw #EndGenderBasedViolence #16daysofactivism2020 #16DaysOfActivism #supportlocal #mystittsville #stittsville #SupportSmallBusiness

Being a part of and supporting our community was so important to us when we purchased the Barn. Thanks for the shout out Joseph. Looking forward to next season.

Happening tonight!

Stittsville Market at The Barn 27.10.2020

Well that's a wrap! And we couldn't have asked for a better way to end the 2020 season. Despite the forecast the community came out and showed up and it was beautiful to see. THANK YOU! Thank you to all of vendors who braved the forecasted weather - thank goodness it turned out to be much nicer than we had anticipated. And a huge thank you to everyone who came out to shop local and support our vendors. We are so grateful to our community; without you showing up every week, th...ere wouldn't be a Farmer's Market. Without you, our vendors would not be here. Stay tuned as we will be posting our application for our 2021 season soon!

While yesterday was not our final market of the season - we have one more coming up Nov 15th. This was the last one of our regular season. While Dan and I were talking last night about how we thought it went for the vendors and the community. I reflected on the conversations we had with vendors and guests over the past season and it gave me all the feels. See, one year ago we bought this little market with the hopes of continuing to build a community; of facilitating relation...ships between grower and produce and customer. Then a global pandemic happened and there were times we didn't know if we could open, what it would be like or if people would even come out. But we did open, we got some amazing farmers and vendors, and people came out to support them. In the early days, after being shut in for over 2 months, people shared how happy they were that they could get out and have somewhere to go; and we felt the same! They loved getting fresh veggies and homemade goods every week. As the season went on, we saw more new faces and more and more of the same faces every week; getting their usual, but also trying something new. We heard how the market gave people a place to go, to connect, and to have face-to-face conversations (albeit it 6 feet apart - lol) in a time when those opportunities are limited. We heard how being a vendor has given opportunities to realize a dream. How the market was so important for their mental health as they got to see people in real life and share their passion with the community. People shared about how important it is to know where their food comes from and how critical it is to shop and support local. The community came out yesterday and it was a beautiful thing to be a part of. Even with the directional signage and all the mask covered faces, the energy was a beautiful one and how grateful are we to have been able to be a part of that; to be a part of our little community. As we watched the community come out and support our local vendors once again, as we chatted with many of them, and as we said see you later to some of our vendors, and as we reflected on this past season, it became apparent that we may have just reached our goal - of building community and connections. So THANK YOU! See you Nov 15th!

It is amazing how fast this season went. Tomorrow, Sunday October 18th from 9-1 will be one of our last markets of 2020. We will have one more Nov 15th. The support from the community has been wonderful and so appreciated. This Sunday we will have 25 vendors offering everything from veggies, meat, honey, preserves, baked goods, and soups to masks, handmade blankets, hats, woodwork and art. We are also accepting monetary donations as we are collecting for Chrysalis House an...d the Stittsville Food Bank. We ask that people wear their masks, sanitize, and follow the directional signage. See you tomorrow at 6154 Abbott St, Stittsville. #themarketatthebarn #stittsvillefarmersmarket #supportlocal #buylocal #farmersmarket

Dear friends, I dont post heartfelt emotional posts but today is different... I am sending a whole hearted plea... As many of you know I am the Executive Direc...tor of the ByWard Market BIA. Believe me when I say, I could not have done this job for so long if I didnt truly love the Market, and I do truly love this crazy place!...the people, the buzz, the energy, the ups and downs, all of it. Hands down best people watching in town, best shops and restaurants, best place to "lets just go see what's happening" cause you just never know... But is has been a difficult, emotional few months... The ByWard Market family is made up of over 600 businesses and thousands of employees. Each and every ByWard family member has experienced the full cycle of emotions from initial shock with the March 16th lock-down and closures to the worry that ensued as lock-down dragged on weeks longer than originally anticipated. Then there was the glimmer of hope as things opened up, the weather improved and people started to emerge from the dark. Businesses "pivotted" to do whatever it took to keep afloat. I witnessed bar and restaurant owners become hosts, bartenders, bus-boys and shop owners become delivery drivers. As the sun shone and temperatures soared, so did spirits, with businesses energized and vowing to live another day. Worries started to mount as the second wave approached and numbers started to creep up... but after the Premier's promise not to shut things down unless supported by hard facts and data... everyone was looking forward to a sunny VERY important Thanksgiving Weekend. Not only because of COVID, but Thanksgiving has always been the last weekend of the "high" season before the arrival of the cold weather and "slow" season. Members fully stocked up in preparation for a busy weekend and for many, the last "hurrah" of the season. Many restaurants were fully booked with reservations and placed their related food orders as a result. Thousands of $$$ in orders were placed and delivered. Then came the slap in the face Friday. Shame on you FordNation I spent the entire day Friday speaking with businesses and I can say this is the first and only time in all of this that there was true despair and a real feeling of hopelessness expressed by just about everyone. Some had blank vacant stares as they tried to process this latest shock. Others were brought to tears and some just defeated, simply giving up... Businesses have done their part. They had pivotted. They had invested in renovations and re-organization of their spaces to ensure safe, healthy distancing. They pay the high costs of PPE. They have been the "bad guy" in refusing entries for those without masks, turned away large reservations and group parties. Staff stayed home if they had even a sniffle. And to their credit we saw no outbreaks tied to our businesses, yet small business became the scapegoat... Please understand the impact of the closure of restaurants. Retailers will tell you that visitation and business went up as soon as patios and restaurants re-opened. Shopping and dining in the ByWard Market and most BIA's and neighbourhoods go hand in hand. While the multi-nationals and banks are posting record profits, our small business community is being decimated. Mom and Pops can lose not only their "shops" they can lose their homes, their life savings... Thousands more staff are now once again unemployed in our community. The big guys don't need your money: Costco $94.1 BILLION in 2020 sales and Walmart's net worth was valued at $514.4 BILLION$ as at April 2020! Did you know that Uber Eats and other intl delivery apps take 30% off the top of the total bill!!!! There is virtually a crumb left for profit. Who DOES desperately need your support is the little guy. Never has #supportlocal been more important. We are so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We are blessed to have a #downtown filled with world class offerings: #unescoworldheritagesite #rideaucanal, National Gallery of Canada, #Parliament Hill, National Capital Commission bike and walking paths, urban parks and fantastic public art. So now I am asking, begging you, to get back #downtown and enjoy the last of the fall colours and all that the City of Ottawa has to offer. It can all be done in a safe and distanced way. Stop into your regular coffee shop, Im sure you've been craving your favourite daily "cup of Joe". I bet you miss the staff and your daily interactions, and believe me they miss you too... a friendly hello would mean the world to them. VISIT your favourite restaurant, and if you are doing take-out, top up your bill with wine, beer or cocktails to go. And offer to pick it up or use local delivery options like: Love Local Delivery DO buy that new top or blouse or shirt from your local retailer. You still need to look good and professional on your Zoom meetings (if only on top! Lol!). Or buy one of their fun and colourful masks, you need one per day so why not show some personality through your masks? And finally, I say this not just about #ByWard, I am asking you to PLEASE support ALL of Ottawa's #smallbusiness and #neighbourhoods especially in the urban core that has been crushed with the instant loss of over a hundred thousand government and office workers and millions of annual tourists all in one fell swoop... Downtown Rideau Sparks Street Bank Street Promenade BIA, The Preston St- Little Italy Ottawa Chinatown Quartier Vanier BIA - QVBIA We are truly all in this together, and some of your neighbours really need you right now... Thank you for your time and consideration. Stittsville Market at The Barn 24.08.2020

On this Thanksgiving weekend we just want to take a moment and express our gratitude for our vendors and our community. It was one year ago this month that we officially became the new owners of the little old log barn and farmer's market - and what a first year it has been! Who would have guessed that our first season would have been during a global pandemic! Nonetheless, we are so thankful that we were able to open and not only one day a week, but 2! We are so thankful fo...r the farmers who had to tend with such unpredictable temperatures early in their season and worked so hard to bring fresh, organically grown produce and meat to the market. Thank you Crowded Table Farm, Lachapelle Farm, Our Hobby Farm, Kavanagh Farm, & Munster Farm To the vendors who worked hard to make their preserves, sauces, jams, and salsas, thank you. To all the makers who are so creative and brought their beautiful creations to the market, thank you. To the mask makers and PPE providers, Monique and Joseph, thank you for helping our community feel safer. Thank you Holmespun Ice Cream, Kristys Naturals, My General Store Market, Mary’s Munchies, Still Busy Baking, Jabreezy's Doughnuts, San Jose Mexican foods/ taqueria, and A Happy Okapi and all the other occasional vendors who visited the market. Last but definitely not least, to the community - thank you! If it were not for you coming out week after week, shopping local and supporting our vendors, your market couldn't have happened. It's been a different kind of year, but it has left us with a clearer sense of what's important and for that we are thankful. Mandy, Dan & Maëlle See you next Sunday for our last regular season market; the Sweater Weather market, until the next Holiday Market Nov 15th 11-3 for a special Holiday Market. #shoplocal #supportlocal #supportsmallbusiness #stittsville
