In honour of Martin Luther King Jr. Day we are posting a lesser known but hugely important quote of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that still rings very true today. It is not just those that actively do harm, but those that observe the harm and continue to say nothing that make the fight against racism and oppression so difficult. We cannot dismantle white supremacist systems without the collective voices of ALL that are opposed to white supremacy. Speak up, stand up, and take action, or forever hold your peace.

Next up in our Arts Exchange: Introducing Shantell Powell! @shanmonster... Shantell is a storyteller and has been all her life. She tells her stories through oral tradition, written media, illustration, and prop creation. Perhaps because of her unusual childhood, she has always been drawn to outsider narratives and the concept of othering. Growing up on the land gives her a strong respect for conservation and for the interplay between humans and nature. Her art reflects these interests. As an Inuk raised far removed from her cultural heritage, she decolonizes herself by immersing her approach in the world of Inuit folklore. She is the author, illustrator, and photographer for a picture book on Inuit folklore exploring themes of strong women, gender-bending, and transformation. This piece, Skinfolk, was recently published in Feminist Studies. #MTSpace #MultiCulturalTheatre #MultiCulturalSpaces #MTSpaceArtsExchange #ArtsKW #KWArts #WRAwesome #KWAwesome #ErasingTheMargins #AllForArts

Tomorrow (October 17th) at 2pm join MT Space for TELL: "a place for urgent conversations in these trying and unprecedented times, where the future of the perfor...ming arts keeps us nervous and innovative. It’s a laid-back atmosphere where artists can perform their works-in-progress, short completed works, or simply start a conversation with the audience." This version of TELL is focusing on the theme of Universal Basic Income (UBI): "MT Space joined the efforts in fighting for UBI because we understand how much marginalized communities will benefit, and how immensely helpful this would be for the arts to ensure artists can survive while they create. Ensuring our artists are supported is always difficult, and we know a UBI would ensure that finding livable wages while trying to create is no longer an issue." Join them live online at 2:00pm for an opening conversation with Artistic Director Pam Patel on new projects, discussing, exploring and sharing stories related to UBI, and a rich range of performances from artists across the province. https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/tell-a-digital-coffee-house-tic

To bring some more joy into our social media world, we’re keeping up with our small social series about works our team has been thinking about! Today Artistic Director, Pam Patel reminisces watching @sankofadanzafro in action during IMPACT13 (video from Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida). One of my most memorable experiences was a piece called ‘La Ciudad de Los Otros by Sankofa Danzafro (Columbia). I watched both nights it performed at IMPACT13, and both times I fe...lt a surge of energy that made me want to run out on King St, in front of the theatre, and protest. Coincidentally, I did exactly that with a community of people almost 5 years later. I wasn’t alone. The end of each performance saw the audience literally jump to their feet and flood the stage, where we danced uninhibited - protesting and occupying space with our bodies. . . . . #mtspace #multiculturaltheatre #multiculturalspaces #artskw #kwarts #wrawesome #erasingthemargins #allforarts #sankofadanzafro #laciudaddelosotros See more
