The New Gallery 12.02.2021

Soon we will be announcing the first Main Space exhibition of TNG's 2021/22 season, and we'd like to introduce two Community Jury Members that helped shaped this year's programming! Say hi to Daniel and Julia :) Daniel Bejarano is an interdisciplinary artist based out of Calgary, Alberta, Treaty 7 Territory. Descending from Nicaragua but being born and raised in Canada, Daniel creates works that speak upon the disconnects and internalized racisms that one goes through when t...hey are a member of a marginalized community (specifically from the point of view of a Latino-American). He also makes works that address other ideologies such as white-supremacy, methods of activism that lead to de-gentrification and justified violence as a retaliation against injustice. Through visual metaphors and symbolism, these ideas are conveyed with sculptures, prints, and large, busy, monochromatic-drawings. Julia Rose Sutherland is a Canadian (Turtle Island) born artist who is a member of the Metepenagiag Mi'kmaq Nation. She has an interdisciplinary practice that utilizes mediums such as photography, sculpture, and performance. In 2013 Sutherland completed her BFA at the Alberta University of the Arts and in 2019 completed her MFA at the University at Buffalo. She has shown and participated in residencies internationally in Canada, the USA, China, and France. She currently resides in Mohkinstsis (Calgary, Alberta) on Treaty 7 territory.

Last year, TNG began hosting combined translated exhibition tours/workshops for Calgary Chinatown seniors. With social distancing in effect, we've had to adapt and have taken these workshops online! Here are some shots from our digital painting session in October with the residents of Clover Living. A massive thank you to artist Terese Mullin for sharing their expertise, and shoutout to our staff Christina for organizing!

"Adventures in Unlearning Racism" by Jason Li, edited by Annie Wong, and translated by Chen Chen is part of "How to Be a Chinese Ally", an anti-racism resource for the Chinese community currently in the making. In the form of personal essays and intimate conversations with Black and Indigenous artists and researchers, How to Be a Chinese Ally documents Wong and Chen's process of disentangling Chinese identity with white supremacy in light of their own vulnerability and compli...city. "How to be a Chinese Ally" is produced in collaboration with Chen Chen and as part of Annie Wong's Community Artist in Residence with the Varley Art Gallery of Markham with support from The New Gallery and the City of Calgary. Jason Li is an independent designer, cartoonist, front-end developer and researcher. His practice centres around telling missing stories, exploring alternative media ecosystems and making the internet a fun, safe and inclusive place. Previous works have appeared at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Asian Art Museum (San Francisco), on the BBC, and on the radio in Spain. He is a co-author of the forthcoming Hanmoji Handbook, an editor at Paradise System.
