Northern Snakehead (Channa argus) are an invasive fish that could spread throughout the Great Lakes watershed and seriously threaten native fish and invertebrat...e populations in Ontario if it becomes established. It can be easily confused with two of our native fish species, Burbot and Bowfin, which you may catch while angling this season. Use the chart below to help you tell these fish apart. For more information on Northern Snakehead, visit www.invadingspecies.com/northern-snakehead/

If you're going to be finding yourself hard-water fishing this year, remember it is illegal in Ontario to dump your bait bucket. Instead, freeze or salt your ba...it for later use. Alternatively, if you do not want to keep the bait for future use, make sure you are 30m from the waterbody before you dump your bucket. This legislation is crucial in protecting our lakes from unintentional introductions of invasive species (e.g. fish, invertebrates, and pathogens) that threaten our native fish populations.

UPDATE to our original #OFAH Insider post on Transport Canada's proposal for boat licensing changes... OFAH responds to the proposal: http://www.ofah.org//boat-licensing-changes-transport-can/

Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters 09.12.2020

Since our update yesterday on the new COVID-19 restrictions, the #OFAH continues to be flooded with questions from people wanting more clarity on whether or not they can go fishing or hunting. We get it. It isn’t black and white when it comes to outdoor activities. It can be confusing, and even seem contradictory at times. While the Government is telling people not to travel for non-essential reasons, fishing and hunting are still permitted activities in Ontario. So while you... wouldn’t be fined for legal fishing or hunting activities, you could be fined if an enforcement officer (police, conservation officer, by-law officer, etc.) deems your trip to be non-essential travel. Unfortunately, this means the OFAH cannot tell you whether or not you can go fishing and hunting, or whether or not you would be fined for doing so. It is up to each individual to make a decision of whether or not they should go fishing and hunting based on their individual circumstances. If someone decides to go fishing or hunting, our advice is to follow all public health guidelines. Stay as local as possible, and do not make any stops to and from your fishing or hunting location. If you are in an ice hut, it must only be with members of your household. If you are outside, it must be in groups of 5 or less, and physically distanced from people outside of your household. It is also highly recommended that you wear masks around anyone outside of your household. Again, you may follow all of these public health guidelines while fishing or hunting, but it still may be deemed that your travel to do so is considered non-essential. The OFAH will continue to keep our website updated as much as possible at www.ofah.org/covid19 and www.ofah.org/covid19/faq/.

-- that sums up our call to our latest OFAH Catch the Ace winner this morning. Hearing the news of a $19,614 cash win literally made Dan T., of North Bay, cry on the phone with OFAH staff this morning. The self-employed business owner couldn’t hide the raw emotion of receiving a burst of financial relief following a very stressful 2020 something so many hard-working families within our proud outdoors community can relate. You can’t think ‘greed’ with th...ese opportunities [OFAH Catch the Ace] because any amount you might win will help. But, if that’s not possible, you wish luck on others, said Dan who flipped over another card in the dwindling OFAH deck of cards card #17, a ten of diamonds. The $309,000 would have been nice but I am ecstatic about $19,614. This is certainly a good start to 2021. Dan said that he, and his wife, Tricia, are passionate about the outdoors and have recently decided they are going to take up hunting and OFAH membership. Thank you Dan. Week 23 starts now with the Progressive Jackpot estimated to reach over $335K by next Tuesday. #IAMConservation

Spotted lanternflies (Lycorma delicatula) lay their eggs from September to November, or until they are killed off by the first freeze. Their mud-like egg masses... will remain on trees until the nymphs begin to hatch in May. Spotted laternflies have not been detected in Canada, but have spread throughout Pennsylvania and into New York state since its detection in 2014. Since its introduction, it has inflicted millions of dollars in damage to the agriculture and forestry industries. Keep an eye out for this invader, as early detection is currently our best tool when combatting a species that is not yet established in Ontario. Report any sightings by taking a few good photos and calling the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711 or visit www.EDDMapS.org/Ontario.

The MNRF is proposing changes to modernize Ontario’s approach to licensing aquaculture. The OFAH is concerned that focusing too much on reducing red tape for businesses could have negative consequences for Ontario’s fisheries. Our submission -- found here: https://www.ofah.org/fishing-hunt/fishing-fisheries/action/) -- highlights the importance of inspections, compliance, and penalties, to ensure that aquaculture facilities are operated sustainably and that our valuable fisheries are a primary focus throughout this process.

The Round Goby’s (Neogobius melanostomus) aggressive habits and rapid spread have had serious negative impacts on native species across Ontario. These invaders,... first introduced to the Great Lakes in the early 90s, have reduced populations of sportfish by eating their eggs, their young, and competing for food and habitat. To prevent the spread of Round Goby, never use them as bait. It is against the law to use Round Goby as bait or have a live Round Goby in your possession. Zander (Sander lucioperca) is an invasive fish native to western Eurasia that was intentionally introduced into Spiritwood Lake in North Dakota in 1989. It is s...uspected that if it becomes established in the Great Lakes, it would directly compete with sportfish, such as Walleye and Yellow Perch, for food and habitat. To help prevent the establishment of Zander in Ontario's waters, familiarize yourself with its identification features and report any suspected sightings to the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711 or visit www.EDDMapS.org/Ontario For more information on Zander, visit our website here: www.invadingspecies.com/zander/ #InvasiveSpecies #Fish #Angling #Conservation

They’ll compete with or prey on really important species like the white-tailed deer, wild turkey, [and] species at risk, such as the northern bobwhite. They can degrade water quality, and they spread other invasive species because they create disturbed habitats. The #MNRF has announced its decision on the proposal to reduce the risk of chronic wasting disease entering Ontario. https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-2065 The #OFAH is extremely pleased with today’s announcement. The importance of the changes cannot be overstated," says Dr. Keith Munro, OFAH Wildlife Biologist. "They put in place meaningful barriers that will prevent the spread of #CWD and safeguard our native white-tailed deer, moose, elk, and caribou. In particular, the ...restrictions on the movement of live captive animals by the deer farming industry has been a major OFAH priority and the changes closely follow what we suggested in 2018. While continued work is needed to keep #Ontario CWD-free, this is a major OFAH accomplishment and we applaud the government for making these changes." Stay tuned over the next few days for more reaction to this news.

Spiny waterfleas (Bythotrephes longimanus) have been found in each of the Great Lakes and in more than 100 inland lakes in Ontario. These tiny invaders can have... big impacts: they reduce the food supply for native fish, they get stuck to fishing equipment, making it difficult to reel in lines, and clog commercial nets. They can easily be transported to new lakes by hitch hiking in your live-wells and bilge water. To prevent their spread in Ontario, remember to Clean, Drain, Dry your boat every time you leave the water. Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) is sometimes used as holiday decoration due to its vibrant red berries that remain on the plant through the winter.... But transporting this invader for any purpose can lead to its further spread within Ontario. The plant can quickly out-compete native vegetation, creating dense thickets as it strangles and kills shrubs or small trees. Avoid transporting oriental bittersweet this holiday season to prevent its spread and protect Ontario’s biodiversity. See more

UPDATE: The OFAH is pleased to note that we have been successful in pushing to have the recent discharge of firearms by-law in the Town of Grimsby repealed. Council voted unanimously on the matter. Bowhunting above the escarpment is once again permitted and the OFAH remains committed to working with the Town of Grimsby to craft a revised by-law in the new year that respects the wishes of council in enhancing public safety while recognizing and maintaining activities such as h...unting, trapping and recreational shooting. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to voice their concerns, and as always, we appreciate your continued support. Not an OFAH member?
