Today we remember. I have the privilege of being this guy’s granddaughter. I had the privilege of seeing The Second World War through his eyes. He was my best friend, we’d stay up sometimes until the wee hours of the morning drinking coffee and rustling through old boxes of photos and postcards and trinkets he and grandma held on to. Private Muzzy was the epitome of what a humanitarian should be. The stories he told about his time in Europe, some were heroic, some we would... laugh until we cried, most were utterly heartbreaking. I asked him once if he ever got into trouble during his time in the military, Twice he said, Once for burning my boot on the fire while I was trying to warm my feet, and once for giving a guy a drink of water. When I think about what this soldier would want us to remember, I think he’d want us to remember to do what is right, not what anyone else tells us is right but what is truly right in our hearts. He would want us to remember to care for each other. Even after he was reprimanded for giving a guy a drink of water he told me he’d do it again if he had to, because even though someone told him it was wrong, he knew in his heart it was right.
